Has anyone read the recent articles about protein drinks ...

Recommended Posts

... and the lead and arsenic found in them? A friend shared with me information she received from her nutrition class about Protein drinks/powders, so I looked it up online (see link below). I am unable to eat solid food for Breakfast so I have Muscle Milk for breakfast made with soy milk.

It seems from the article that the problem stems from drinking protein 3 times a day.

Is anyone aware of this problem with Protein drinks? What are your thoughts?

:) I heard it on the Today Show. They said there were only a couple of brands that had issues.

My Dr.s made it pretty clear that we shouldn't have more than one Protein drink a day, and it was for the sole purpose of adding Protein to our diet. Three meals and one Protein Drink to get to the optimum total of 90g of protein a day.

So I'm sure they already knew that it wasn't good to live on the protein drinks. They also advocate using chia seeds three times a day in our food or drink to get Fiber. They help to keep things moving, if you know what I mean.

Interesting...I wish they would have listed the drinks they tested. I use Unjury 1-2 times a day.

Its the same with anything, moderation is one thing and if a food has good benefits and some not so good, then moderation protects you to some extent (although lead and arenic?). Having them several times a day is overdoing it. You shouldnt rely on any one food to that extent.

If you read the article from Consumer Reports, they also go one to say we get arsenic and cadmiun in fresh fruits and veggies, other canned and packaged food, liver, fish, etc. It is from use of pesticdes and fertilzers with these chemicals in them.

You can't get waswy from it in this world, unless you grow all your own food. Sad, but true.:)

When you read the entire article, Muscle Milk is the real problem. They state that "most other brands are low". Yep, our food supplies are tainted. Unless you buy certified organic, and I cannot afford to. Or grow your own and have your soil tested. Medi-fast products have been tested and are safe.

The reality is that we're dying from the day we took our first breath. Before the band, I was going to most likely die of heart disease, complications of diabetes or any number of other things related to obesity. I may still have a shorter life span from decades of being obese.

We can scare ourselves with this report...or we can go pick out a report showing levels of various chemicals/hormones/pesticides in any of the other products we ingest and let that one scare us. Even if you buy organic, you're breathing in the polluted air that surrounds you...or the various chemicals found in your body care products, materials in your carpets, furniture, etc. which give off vapors that pollute our air.

I drink the EAS ready made shakes twice a day (in between meals) and one made from their Protein powder for breakfast. This report hasn't convinced me not to.

Jacqui, you're right moderation is key.

Froggy, you are also right -- we can't get away from anything in the world today ... plenty of poisons in our foods ... I guess our bodies will adjust ... as it has before.

Elfie, no one posting said anything about being "scared". But knowledge is good so that we know what we are dealing with and can act accordingly. We're not scared

Thanks to all for your thoughts and opinions. I was just wondering if anyone had heard about this and if they had additional information. I, for one, will continue to have a Protein drink for breakfast -- moderation in all things is key.

Here's the whole list from CR. I attached the chart too in case the link changes sometime in the future.

Protein Drinks: What's in them? Consumer Reports

I use an Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard 100% whey powder, which looks to be pretty low (and is pretty tasty, as powders go), but I think I might check out the Hydro whey they have as it seems to be even higher in Protein and lower in heavy metals.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
