What's up with the hernia repair?

Recommended Posts

So why do so many of us have hernias that need to be repaired during surgery? Is it because we're overweight?

If I'm self pay will my insurance pick up the fee for this?

Just had surgery yesterday and if I wouldn't have asked nurse I wouldn't have known they repaired it. Never saw dr.

I don't know why so many of us have a hernia. However, I was a self pay and the insurance did pick up a very small part of the surgeons charges, and I'm still waiting to hear on the hospital and anesthesia charges.

I'd recommend that you ask the hospital and doctor to bill your insurance right away. I asked the hospital about a month after the surgery (March), then just found out they hadn't done it. I've since submitted it myself, since they didn't seem at all inclined to help me out.

Good luck, Sharon

I was self pay but my Dr, (whom I Love) told me before surgery that if I had a hernia he would repair it and it was included in my cost. I didnt have one but It was good to know it was covered going in.

I'll be the first to say I'm not a medical expert, but I think the reason is many times that area is stitched to reinforce it and help with any reflux issues. I too had a hiatal hernia repair, but it sounded like the surgeon routinely stitches this area to reinforce it and help keep food in the stomach and not migrating up into the esophagus along with the stomach acid (reflux).

I also had a hernia repair and I was self pay, my surgeon did it for free, but if your surgeon is on your insurance plan then your insurance will pay for it. The hernia repair has not be great. I have so much restriction and I only have 2cc's in a 10 cc band. My surgeon told me that the restriction is coming from the hernia repair, he said that a hernia repair on its own will give you restriction, and then having the band, and having 2cc is giving my the restriciton I have. I do not eat very much in one sitting. I was banded 4 1/2 monts ago and I have lost 45 lbs. I just wanted to let everyone know that they should not be surprised if they feel restriction after a hernia repair and band surgery even if they have little or no Fluid in the band.

Thanks for the info. I guess I'll just wait and see.

Funny thing, my consult with dr was supposedly 'free'. Well my insurance showed the dr's office billed them for the consult, but showed I payed my co-pay, which I didn't.

So I'm sure they'll try to bill my insurance for the hernia. Hope they take whatever the insurance pays as covered in full.

I happened to be looking through my Insurance Co claims the other day online & I noticed my surgeon charged my ins co for the supposed "free" consult also. Them crooked turds!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
