Which bands are eroding?

Recommended Posts

With the recent onset of bandsters discovering erosion, I'm both worried and curious to know which bands we've been losing. Are they a combination of types or any particular type?

When I researched pre-banding, I chose mine because it seemed at the time to have less problems with slippage and because it's totally soft and pliable, less erosion issues. I'm wondering if the test of time will uphold this information.

I'd like to see if the stats show a problem with the surgeon/surgery i.e. having it done in Mexico, or the type of band itself, regardless of who placed it.

My 4 friends (Karen, Donali, Fracesa, LaMadam) were all banded in Mexico with Inamed bands. Two were Lopez patients, two are Ortiz patients. I know several others, but considering these are all personal friends of mine, the numbers are way higher than 1-3%.

Have we heard any erosion from the states?

This has been my worst fear. I was banded on 11/9 and have not stuck to my liquid diet as I'm suppose too. I never knew food was suck an addiction and I was so weak! Yesterday was the first day I couldn't feel my band and port and I felt GOOD!

Not to be argumentative, but considering the number of surgeries done and the amount of people we've all met on here and other sites since being banded, its not a surprise that several people you know have had to lose their bands due to erosion. While it is indeed very sad (I can't imagine what I'd do if mine eroded), I don't think it changes the actual statistics in any way.

As always, I could be wrong lol, wouldn't be the first time ... but I feel that with all the sad news over the past few weeks regarding erosions/slippage/etc, that its best to look at facts and reports, rather than speculation, as it tends to lead to mass hysteria at times.

HouseCrazy, no, not slippage. I'm looking for facts regarding erosion. We've had a small group of bandsters diagnosed with it recently and I'm attempting to research which bands/surgeons/locations are at higher risk, if any. I'd like to see if there are any trends leading in a particular direction. Parvathi is correct in saying that we need to look at facts and reports, so I'm attempting to gather them here if possible.

I can't find the thread but I read something maybe 2 or 3 weeks ago where it was tallied that all the cases of erosion were MX surgeries. Then again maybe it was all a dream, 'cause I sure can't find that thread now...

Hi Yall,

I am with Jess on this one. Yes, I also know 4 people with eroded bands. But I also know about 200 bandsters being here int he DFW area. So statiscally that still makes 1-3%. I do know one other person here in the area that had an erosion. She is also a mexican bandster. I dont know of any US bandsters that were banded here that have eroded. I know of several slippages, but thats about all.

What is a Band erosion?

This is when the Band actually erodes into the stomach. It is a more serious problem, and generally requires removal of the Band. Band erosion is thought to be related to placing too many sutures (or too tight sutures) at the time of Band implantation. Surprisingly, Band erosion is often unnoticed. Occasionally the port will become infected if bacteria track along the catheter out to the port. Other times patients will stop losing weight. Diagnosis often requires an endoscopy.

A band slippage usually requires the patient to return to the operating room for repair. A band erosion is related to the pressure of the band being wrapped around a hollow organ. Over time, the band may erode through the stomach wall and if this occurs, reoperation is required.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
