Not afraid of Surgery BUT....?

Recommended Posts

Thinking of the lap band and am in 90 day diet portion to get approved. I've done a decent amount of research so far but specifically need to find out more about nausea and throwing up.

I HATE to throw up as "most" people do and am curious as to it's effect in day to day life...? How often do you feel nauseous or actually throw up? Why? What causes it? Specific foods/times or combination?

When you swallow a bite of food and you don't chew enough does it come up ? I've herd people say it hurts? What kind of hurt/discomfort is this 1-10? I don't want to throw up in a dinner meeting or something like that and never had an issue with this before is it automatic... Some perspective would be much appreciated!!!

I have been banded for over 3 months and have yet to have any form of nausea yet. The throwing up happens if you eat too fast or too much but it isn't vomit. You regurgitate the food with a whole bunch of saliva and mucus from your esophagus. It doesn't come out your nose or anything.

If you swallow something that hasn't been chewed enough it gets "
stuck
" in the small opening between your pouch and lower stomach. It hurts like a bitch! I liken it to being a vampire and being staked through the heart. It's happened to me a couple dozen times now and after about 50 more, I think I will finally learn.

The pain happens immediately but you've got plenty of time to excuse yourself to head to the bathroom to hack it back up.

Tom, I haven't thrown up yet. I have only been banded since 4/9/10 though. There has been no nausea either, the doc prescribed me some anti nausea meds for after surgery but didn't need them. The pain from being stuck, maybe a 5, but with every thing, people are different. Hope this helps, Wayne

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
