First fill-no swallow test?

Recommended Posts

I had my first fill on Tuesday. 2 cc's. I haven't had any problems, but I have read on here about everyone having to do the swallow test. I didn't have to do that after the surgery (I mean they made me eat ice chips, but no x-ray) and I didn't have to do anything after my fill. I was literally up and out the exam room door within a minute.

Like I said I haven't had any problems, nothing is getting stuck, but I have stuck with soft foods so far (liquid the first 24 and soft for 2 days then test regular foods as I feel I can handle) but it concerns me that once I get past the first couple feels I might have some issues since I am out the door so quick.....

anyone else get fills without the tests afterwards?

My doctor makes me drink one of those little cups of Water after a fill. If you can get that down without issue, then generally you are ok. Then clear liquid for 24 hrs, full liquid for 24 hrs after that, then mushies after that until the swelling goes down.

Next time you go in if you anticipate getting another fill, take a bottle of Water with you and take a sip after the fill to make sure you feel safe to leave.

I had my first fill yesterday and had to drink out of the little cup filled with Water. I took about 3 swallos and he decided I was ok even though the Water was gurgling in my throat. If you ever question your fills, make sure to talk to the Dr. Thats what they are there for!

Mine told me I may be a bit snug and if I had ANY issues to call and he would immediately unfill me.

Good luck!

I will keep that in mind (the Water bottle) he didn't have me do anything and I was so excited about getting the fill I didn't think about that. I asked how much he was putting in, when I can have another and those kinds of things but forgot about testing the fill!!!!

My doc is going to fill me 4 weeks post op. Thanks for the shared info about it. I'm nervous about the fill.

My doc doesn't measure the fills.....I asked him how much he put in and he said not to focus on that - to focus on how I felt. I did do the swallow test though....he filled the band, then had me drink something gross while looking at the xray and slowly unfilled it until he could see the liquid go down. My next fill won't be done that way. I must say though, that I feel like I have absolutely no restriction....I'm starving all the time - even at 2 slices of pizza 2 months post op....

Wow. I am about 5 weeks post op and I can fill some restriction with this fill. I am not able to eat much at this point, even with slider foods like Soup and such.

I had to do the barium swallow at the hospital before being released, but never after a fill. I get the fill, drink a dixie cup of Water and am good to go! Fill are done quickly in the office and so long as the water goes down your good to go!

See my doctor isn't even testing that, but then again it is the first fill and I didn't have any issues up to that point so maybe tehy will watch it closer as I get other fills????

My dr always makes you drink a small glass of Water after a fill. If it feels like the water is in the back of your throat then she takes some out. I had an instance where I thought it would go away and didn't say anything and when I started solids a few days later nothing would go down and they ended up having to take even more out because I was swollen. I would ask why they don't have you drink anything and also take a bottle of water with me to try it before I left the office. Hope all goes well. Good luck.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
