I have a small hiatal hernia. Does the surgeon fix this while he is doing the band or does it have to be fixed before you can have the band?

They will fix it when you get the band. I didnt even know, the only difference I would say is that I have my shoulder pain *which is from him repairing it* a lot longer and worse then just gas pains.

I have a hernia as well and my doc said he will fix when he's in but why is the shoulder pain worse? Is it still just gas?

I am two weeks post op and having the worst pains in my shoulder which sometimes moves up to my neck. I asked one of the ladies that works in my surgeons office (that also been banded bout two years ago) if it was normal to still have gas pains this far out and this is the response i got

" The shoulder pain is normal, mine was with me for a long time. It's actually not the gas, it's a referred pain from your diaphragm, which is where he did the hiatal hernia repair. Take deep breaths to exercise your lungs & diaphragm, & it will loosen up."

It really is bad for me, i come home from work crying to just lay down in my bed!

Been there, done that, got the pictures to prove it. I knew I had a hiatal hernia before going into surgery. He repaired it and then did the band. He said it was a "massive hernia". The shoulder pain is from the hernia repair. Pain diversion or something like that.

Good luck.

How long did your pain last? I cant handle much of this. Did you take anything for it?

My hernia repair was so big that they took pictures of it and the band. I had the shoulder/neck pain for a loooooooong time. It is gone now though...5 1/2 months out. So it will go away. Try some adult strength liquid tylenol for the pain. Or if it gets so bad you can't stand it take some of your left over pain reliever (the prescription one). Just know that it does go away. Best wishes!!!

My word!!! I have fibro and already have shoulder pain!!! The hernia pain is worse after the EGD (upper GI deal). Is it possible that the EGD agitated the hernia and I'm having "pain displacement/transference" now?

My head is spinning - oh Lord.

5 months!!!!! that just made me cry a little.

I did not express myself correctly. The pain only lasted about 6 weeks and then slowly dissipated over time. I found it would come back when I would overeat or get stuck but I don't have it at all anymore. Sorry to freak you out. Best wishes!!!

I had my hiatel hernia repaired during the lap band procedure. I still can't believe what a difference it has made. I have not had to take any Prilosec since the day before surgery. I was taking 2 a day.

Good luck to you.

Catmom, my experience was similar to yours--although the hiatal hernia repair was not the intended surgery, I had immediate relief from it and was able to go off Prilosec from the day of surgery. In fact, the relief from the hiatal hernia kept me going during bandster hell--sort of thinking, "Well...the best is yet to come from the band but look! I'm already feeling better!"

Good luck to you all--I had shoulder pain, too, but it was all worth it.

Finally - now I know why I am still having the shoulder pain 4 weeks out. I had a HUGE (as they put it) hiatal hernia repaired during surgery. Never knew I had one, and did not have symptoms. It has made recovery longer, but I thought it was really strange that I was still having shoulder pain now. Thanks to all of you, I get it now, and I will stop worrying about it. Mine has only been intense a few times - usually it is fairly low level and comes and goes, coming on when I have eaten something that is causing me a little distress.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
