Hello from Carol...just beginning journey

Recommended Posts

Hello, I am new to the forums. I am so happy I found this site. I attended a seminar in April. On Friday I will have my consult with the surgeon. I am so nervous for Friday, I do not know what to expect or what will happen at the appointment. I plan to attend my first support group meeting in June. I hope to stay active in the forums throughout my journey. Carol

Hi Carol,

I had just answered this for someone else also. Here is what I said.

The consult is the easy part. The surgeon will explain to you all about the surgery and what to expect both before, during and after the surgery. He will go over all of your medical history. And you will sign papers for the surgery. This is the time to ask questions. No question is stupid. That's what the surgeon is there for. Then depending on what type of insurance you have (unless you are self pay) your doctor will set you up with other consults from other doctors that your insurance might require. For instance mine took 6 months. I had to have 6 months of supervised diet from a nutritionist, 1 Psychiatrist visit, 1 cardiologist visit, 1 gastroenterologist visit, 1 Pulmonary visit, and a letter of diet habits and approval from my primary doctor.

As for the surgery, what you are feeling is very normal. But I will tell you that it's a pretty easy surgery. Yes it does hurt a little after but that's what the pain pills are for. This is probably the best thing I have ever done for myself. I am EXTREMELY happy that I had it done. The only regret that I have is that I didn't get it done sooner. I have not been to the weight that I am now since about 1989. I have only 34 lbs to go before I hit goal.

You will be fine. Go in there with your head held high and ask alot of questions. Please keep us posted with your progress. You can also read my blog. It might help you a bit.

Hi Carol, I'm new to the sight as well. I was a nervous wreck too. It's a very quick visit with the Doctor and more time with the PA getting your med history. My surgery is July 7th. I started last Aug 09. You'll do fine. Good Luck!! Carol D'

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Anyone had the TORe procedure? How did it go? How much weight did you loose?

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
