How long does Restriction last?

Recommended Posts

I was banded Feb. 23rd, 2010. I am going in for my 3rd fill this next Monday and I have not experienced restriction yet. I have lost 10 pounds (when I was on liquids after my surgery) but have gained a couple of pounds back. I am frustrated because I thought restriction would come earlier than 3rd or 4th fill. Anyway, how long does restriction last once a person gets there? Thanks so much for any input.

I was banded 2/22/10. I started with 2.5 cc in my band and had a fill on 3/31 for a total of 4.5 cc. For about a week after my fill I felt restricted. I lost 2 pounds after the fill because I was on liquids for a couple days. Haven't lost an ounce since. I can eat way too much now and will be going in for another fill in a week. My surgeon's office said everyone is different and you need to pay attention to the signs that you need a fill -- not losing, can eat too much, and hungry between meals. I worry about being filled too much and not being able to swallow my own spit! But I guess it's trial and error to get to the elusive sweet spot.

What size band to you have and how much is in it now?

My doc. has said that each fill lasts a bit longer. I have found this to be true. I really felt good restriction after my 3rd fill.

I had my surgery 2/22/10 i have lost 42lbs as of today and i had only 1 fill and that was at time of surgery. I've seen my doctor 2 since then and he did not give me a fill. I see him again next month and im starting to feel hungry between meals. I may call him before then and let him know. I'm on a less than 1000 calorie "diet" I use sparkspeople.com to keep me on track. Im starting to lose 2 to 3 lbs a week which i heard was normal.

Once you reach "true restriction", after several fills, usually, it lasts forever. I am finally there and am 4 months out. It took a long time to get there but it has stayed with me this time. Best wishes!!!

Hi guys (not literally)...this is only my 2nd or 3rd response in 2 months because I would like to start a thread - but don't know how...so here is my response to your thoughts on restriction.

I was banded on 2/26/10, and as far as I know there was nothing in my band (the nurse stressed to me that the band would remain empty until my first fill to get adjusted to it as it has some restriction without a fill considering the swelling and so forth). At first I did feel some restriction and my eating was limited for approx 3 weeks(and yes I was on liquids then pureed then regular), then as time progressed I began to eat foods that were more normal for me - just not quite the same quanity.

I got my first fill on 4/5/10 of 2cc's. At first I did not feel any different, but about a week later my brother took me out to Outback for my birthday(at my request - but he warned me not to try to eat regularly to keep from throwing up my birthday meal) Well...hmmm...there were 4 of us and we had 2 appetizers ( shrooms and bloomin' onion) and I did not eat like I normally would but I did eat a lot (with my brother and husband staring at every bite) then came the salad - and I eat a good 50% of that, but decided to stop so I would be able to eat most of my meal.(ok, ok I know that was stupid). The meal came and I was able to take 3 bites of sweet potato and 2 bites of prime rib and then completely out of the blue with no warning before during that evening (that I noticed)---the most embarrassing thing happened and this was also the 1st time, so I was not prepared. Burning chest pain...felt like something was stuck...and I couldn't drink to wash it thru. I sat there for about 5 - 6 minutes dreading going to restroom until I felt that I had to get up and walk all way on the other side of the building to the restroom to keep from vomitting right there at the table - with everyone in our party staring at me. I did get some relief in the restroom - but it was not my dinner do to speak. It was slimey phlegm stuff...and I don't know what that is or where it came from. that is my experience with restriction.

I feel less restriction now - which I expected. We are leaving for a cruise to alaska on 5/8/10 and I have an appointment for a fill on 4/27/10 along with an evaluation for a breast biopsy from the same surgeon. I am very anxious about both, but I am trying to get on with the preparation for the cruise - thinking it will keep me my mind occupied. The mind is very influential on the outcome of things.

Has anyone experienced the same thing or close to the same thing regarding restriction. This is mine.

I would wait until after your cruise to get your fill. Sometimes, you won't know for a couple weeks if your fill is too tight. It would be tragic to go on a cruise and find out you are unable to eat or drink at all. Emergency rooms are not easy to get to or fun to go to for this reason. I was filled a full two weeks before a trip, thinking it was enough time. I had a lot of restriction but was doing fine with it. I had some wine the night before we left and did not know that I would be tighter in the morning after alcohol I swallowed my Vitamin which usually not a problem, but this time, it was a problem. I had an 8 hour flight, and spent the whole time wondering if I was going to have to go to the emergency room when I arrived on the other end of the country. I was not able to keep down even Water. I finally decided not to eat or drink anything at all for awhile. When we got to our destination, I was starting to feel better, and it ended up being fine, but I was very anxious for about 6 hours there. It was a combination of new fill, alcohol, altitude, and taking my Vitamin too early in the morning. It was a valuable lesson. I would have waited if I had known about all of this so thought I would pass it along.

My situation sounds alot like yours. My band is 10 cc and I now have 4 cc in it.

what you experienced is not restriction. You had a "stuck" episisode along with sliming brought on by eating to much and probley to fast. "Restriction" is feeling full after eating small quanities of the proper food. Stuck is geberally brought on by not chewing well, eating the wrong foods and over eating. There is a big difference between the two.

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I'm in Houston so kind of near you and had the sleeve in Dec. Down 61 lbs. Feeling better. Was definitely worth it. I hope the everything is going well for you. Update us when you can!

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!
