Psych Eval Question

Recommended Posts

I'm supposed to have a psych eval....what can I expect? I've never been to a psychologist before. What are they looking for? Any advice?

Simple stuff, like "How many people are in the room right now?" and "Who is the president?"

It's really not that bad...as long as you're sane.

Seriously, I was handed a booklet, with about 250 questions in it - ranging from "Do you love your mother?" to "Do you talk to people that aren't there?" LOL

The actually one on one with the psych was easy - he asked simple questions...they mostly want to know that you've thought about your decision and that you'll have a support system in place.

I'm also assuming that if you have any food issues, they'll probably want to know about that and deal with those before surgery.

They ask questions about your health, about your family, and if you have been hositalized for anything mental. It was really easy. Don't worry about it. Even if you have a mental illness, they won't put that against you.

I was basically asked about my health, family and relationship with food.

Some of the questions were like:

*What health problems have you been experiencing?

*Is anyone else in your family overweight?

*Does anyone in your family have HBP or diabetes?

*Have you ever been abused (physically/mentally)?

*Do you have a support system for after the banding?

*Is your main support people overweight?

*Do you have a lot of stress in your life?

*Have you ever been anorexic?

*Have you ever made yourself throw-up after eating?

*Do you binge eat?

*How does eating make you feel?

*How important is food in your life?

*Do most of your activities with friends/family revolve around food? If your activities do revolve around food how are you going to cope with that after banding?

*After banding, what are you going to replace the comfort you get from eating with?

Those are some of the questions that were asked of me. The interview was pretty straight forward. I am not sure if there really is a right or wrong answer to the questions. Just answer honestly and you will do fine.

Good luck to you!

Mine was a 20 minute chat about my understanding and expectations of the procedure.

We also discussed my medical, mental, and weight/food history.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
