Anyone had or having out-patient surgery???

Recommended Posts

Mine will be outpatient, and I'll be having a hiatal hernia repair at the same time.

I will be at a huge hospital in downtown Chicago which is only about 10 minutes from where I live.

My mom had hers done at the same hospital with the same surgical team I will be using, but she stayed overnight for 2 reasons:

1. She had a clot risk and they wanted to keep an eye on her and

2. She lives about an hour from the hospital and wasn't keen about being so far away. There are tons of other hospitals near her, but that wasn't much of a comfort. :)

My surgery was done as outpatient. I had surgery at 11:30 and was home around 4. It was the first time I had ever had surgery and it went well, and I haven't had any complications so far.

My surgery was an outpatient procedure at a local hospital. My surgeon required a 6 hour stay after anesthesia to make sure that problems did not arise after surgery that would require a hospital stay. If anything had come up, I would have stayed the night. Fortunately, that was not the case and all went well. I would not have any concerns with surgery center as long as you check to find out what will happen if complications arise? Will you be transported to a hospital for care?

i'm having surgery on Thursday in an outpatient facility in La Jolla . My bmi is 34 and I am self pay. . .so. . . .it is cheaper as well as the insurance companies are not dictating where.

Good Luck to us! :)

Wow well thank you to everyone for all the responses. I had the time to speak with my surgeon and he told me basically the same info you all are saying. Its minimally invasive, its a cheaper way to do the proedure with the hospital staying adding about 5-7k to the bill & also because its safer in that you dont run the risk of contracting MRSA, who someone on this thread listed. But of course I am to stay long enough to recover from anesethia, do a barium swallow & all that so Im more comfortable with the idea. Ofcourse it doesnt hurt that I do live down the street from Grossmont/Sharps hospital & I am a nurse so Ill know the S/Sx of get up and get to the ER! =) So thank you all for replying to me.

I too live right down the road from the hospital I am having the procedure at, so I definitely feel better about that. I may board my dogs for a day or two as they are small and like to jump all over me. That is sure to hurt!

Again, good luck with everything and please post your progress!

My surgery is April 23, and out-patient surgery means that you will be released within 24 hours of admission. So you may actually be able to spend the night - that is what my insurance company told me.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
