How soon did you start on Mushies?

Recommended Posts

I'm 7 days post op and I am sooooo tired of shakes and Soup. I'm starting on mushies after 2 week post op. I know every doctor is different. How soon were you able to start on mushies? This last week is going to be so hard. This is my 4th week on liquids including my pre-op diet. ugggh!

Every patient is different to every doctor.

I got the go ahead to do blended/pureed foods at 1 week post-op.

I got the ok to eat normally following my 2 week post-op appointment.

No mushy or pureed stage for me. I was instructed to have clear (non-calorie) liquids only until 4 days post-op, then I could eat whatever I want except red meat and raw fruits/vegies. I did not have any problems w/this. I still haven't PB'd or thrown up at all since surgery.

I should point out, though, that my surgeon does not install the band w/any fill. I've since learned that many surgeons do add some fill at the time of surgery and that would definitely make you more tight straight out the gate. So, be careful if you decide to progress faster than what your surgeon instructed.

First week I did Clear Liquids then I was able to move onto creamy Soups after a week. Then the 3rd week I was onto mushies

My doc's instructions were:

  • surgery day and next day - clear liquids
  • next 7 days - full liquids (cream Soups, yogurt, non-sugar pudding)
  • next 3 weeks - pureed inc. mashed taters, tuna and chicken salad
  • next two weeks - no more pureed, but soft meats and veges (like ground beef)
  • after that normal foods

I started w/2.5 cc in my band. I now have 4.5 cc and have one more week of soft foods.

I was never so happy to have mashed potatos! Recently, a hamburger patty! Whoo hoo! You'll be there soon so hang on and let that band site heal.

I had two weeks of full liquids, two weeks of mushies/pureed foods, then onto regular (starting with soft foods, but no real schedule for this).

I also started with no fill in my band, and still had the two weeks of liquids. I never looked so forward to cottage cheese as I did that last week of liquids!

My doctor doesn't have a mushy stage. I started on pureed Protein on Day 3 postop. After a couple of weeks on purees, I moved on to solids (protein only). And after a specified period, nonstarchy veggies were added. That's where I am now; I'll be adding a serving/day of fruit in a couple of weeks----and that is it until I reach 75% of excess weight lost, at which point whole grains can be added in, in moderation.

I was on clear liquids a week post-op, full liquids 3 days, then purees for 2 weeks, finally transitioning to softs/solids. Had my first fill yesterday, so I'm back to liquids today...purees tomorrow and Saturday...then, if all goes well, I can start morphing back to softs/solids. Good thing I had lots of supplies for all stages handy :-)

Best of luck- remember that everyone is different, so just use what you see here for comparison, not as a guideline for you.

I was on 2 weeks of clear liquids, then on to 2 weeks of mushies. I didn't even want to think of having "real' food for probably 3 weeks after surgery. It's funny how it is so differnet for everyone though.

I was on a clear liquid diet (broth, jello) for day 1&2 post op. which didnt matter much anyway, because I could barely fit anything thru my pouch because of the swelling (Im assuming).

Starting day 3 I was allowed to have full liquids, which (to my pleasant surprise) includes cream of wheat (farina). This has been a life saver for me. I could NOT have tolerated the Protein shakes for the entire 2 required weeks of full liquids.

I have found that mixing plain farina with cinnamon and splenda and a scoop of Isopure unflavored Protein powder is a lovely Breakfast, and mixing plain farina with low sodium chicken broth and salt and a scoop of Isopure unflavored Protein Powder is a lovely lunch and dinner. This tastes exactly like pastina. It's a lifesaver when you are looking for something to fill you up more than a Protein shake could. If you're stuck on the full liquid phase, I recommend asking your doctor if cream of wheat or cream of rice is an acceptable meal.

Weeks 3&4 will be "mushies" which will mean mashed potatoes, meat balls, etc.

And week 5 will start my regular food.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
