Post-Op Insomnia??

Recommended Posts

So I had my surgery on Feb. 24th and the first night I slept fine but it seems that Im getting less sleep every night. Last night was my first night without my mom here watching over me since surgery and I swear I was up since 3 am finally at 5am I decided to go ahead and just get up. Unfortunately I suffer from anxiety attacks but have been able to manage them and haven't had any real events in a while. Well I did last night I'm still shaken up and Im feeling kinda nauseous. Im thinking that most of my uncomfortableness is coming from having to sleep on my back, which I hate. I can fall asleep but staying asleep ummm not so much. Im a wreck right now. Im even going so far as to question my decision to have the lap-band. Minor set back Im sure but what do yall recommend?:cursing:

Hi Ashley,

I had my surgery on 2/12 and I know exactly what you're going through. I HATE sleeping on my back, and had no choice the first few nights, so I got very little sleep. Around the 4th night, I was able to get on my side with the help of pillows, and it made all the difference. I also took a sleeping pill so that I could get uninterupted sleep. Sleep is really important in your body's healing, so do what you can to get some. I hope that helps. Hang in there, by day 5 you are going to feel so much better.

Im so glad to know Im not alone. I actually can sleep on my side a little here and there but I wake up and its a bit painful. I came downstairs and wrote this post and then somehow got comfy on the couch and fell asleep for a couple hours. I think maybe I will just do that tonight, sleep on the couch that is. I did take simply sleep and that usually knocks me out but yeah I still woke up last night. Thank you for your advice and I hope to report a good nights sleep soon.

Hang in there! I'm a stomach sleeper and when I was first banded I thought I was going to lose it! I slept on the couch for 2 weeks and only got 4 hours a sleep at a time. It was awful on top of the food withdrawal my mind was experiencing. It's a whole host of emotions you go through when you have this surgery, at least for me. I can tell you by the second week I was feeling better and by the 3rd I was sleeping better. Once the swelling goes down and the pain subsides you'll start to sleep normally.

I think what you are experiencing is normal. If you can talk to your Mom or a friend (or counselor) to get you through the tough times, you'll be much better - or find a lapband buddy!! :crying:

You can do this! Look how far you've come!

I know what you mean. I got mine on the 22nd and last night was horrible! I finally bought a simple sleep aid to get some more rest. I sleep on my side so it's been really difficult to get comfortable. I tossed and turned all night last night, it was ridiculous. Hope you get some good Zzzs!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
