my first attempt at food

Recommended Posts

after two weeks on liquids, I made my first attempt at food today. It was meant to be soft food, but I bought some smoked mackerel and tried to eat that. After only one ounce, I suddenly felt that I coul eat no more, and could be sick. It came as a shock - I felt so ill, actually I felt like I could hardly breathe. After 10 minutes it went away, but it came as a wake up call after 2 weeks on liquids. I had to put the rest of the mackerel in the fridge and tackle it in the afternoon instead!

I haven't actually been sick yet but I came close to it today! It surprised me just how suddenly the feeling came upon me that I could not eat one bit more. Normally, on a non-banded stomach, you get full more gradually and can normally finish up your plate, however full you are. But this time it happened all of a sudden - I was suddenly over-full and could not have had one gram more at that point!

sounds more like a stuck episode to me rather then being full

That doesn't sound "full" nearly as much as struggling with food of the wrong consistency; I think I'd shelve it for a while.

Soft food really needs to be soft and moist. Smoked fish can be awfully dry and dense; it's not something I'd attempt right out of the gate.

It's true, though, you've lost the leeway to finish up what's on your plate---at least for now. (You may have a period where you don't have the same restriction you have now; swelling can play a big role at first.) But that's the whole point of the band :smile2:

Holy Mackerel, try something a little softer to eat for your first real food.

Do you like egg salad or chicken salad? Those both go down prettty good for me.

Thank you all. I won't buy mackerel for a while! It was tastier though than anything I've eaten for weeks!!

Man I wish I would fill full after just a little bit, I feel like I could eat a lot, just like before having the band., But I do not allow myself to... My Dr won't do any fills till after 8 weeks, if that. I sometime think that there is nothing there, or something is wrong.. I have lost a total of 40 lbs since starting at the pre op diet, and now I'm afraid that i will gain that back.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
