I've messed up

Recommended Posts

I had my one year follow up appointment today. I thought, "hey, let's finally update the ticker on here!". I haven't lost any weight since May 10. I'm so frustrated. That's an 8 month plateau. I know it has a lot to do with me, but there are so few foods that I can keep down that I find I eat the same (sometimes not so good-like mashed potatoes) things all of the time.

I do get out and exercise every day. I'm just really upset about this plateau. Yes, I know this is a tool and all, but I don't eat all that much as it is. My doctor has given me 3 options that I have 3 months to think about.

1) Keep the band and tighten it. This scares me, since it was too tight in June and I couldn't get it loosened for about a month. I should have lost some weight then, but if i did, it's all been gained back.

2) Get rid of the band. If it's not doing anything for me, why keep it? I'm aware that I will gain back everything I've lost and I'm sure my diabetes will come back. This is not an option i'm really considering.

3) Go for a gastric bypass. My doctor has suggested this as an alternative. My BMI is just under the qualifying # right now, so there may be a review with the surgeons group or whomever it is that discusses it, but it is a definite possibility.

What would you do? I've got over 50 lbs to lose to get to goal and the scale isn't moving. I'm at the point where I feel I'm just a failure. I'm 27 and this was supposed to change my life. I don't think I've done what I'm supposed to. I don't have any support where I am since I got the band as a clinical study and NO ONE I know has gone through this. I need advice, opinions, experiences... ANYTHING!

My advice:

Stick with the band! You made a committment to the band and yourself. You CAN do this. You are half way there already!!! I have started a food diary as I have only lost 7 lbs in the past couple months. The last bit is the hardest to lose and keeping yourself 100% accountable for allllll that you eat is so helpful! Your body has most likely adapted to what your eating habits are like, so change it up! I did a liquid diet (yes, its awful) for a week to get things moving again... I have read on here that it helps when you get to where we are at... I'll know tomorrow how much I have lost!

Hang in there and stay positive. If you ever need someone to talk to, I'm here!!!

Option 4: Keep the band a loosen it.

You should be able to eat healthy foods. The lady who does my fills also has a band. She told me that if I am too tight all I will do is eat slider foods and drink my calories and then I will stop losing weight. This sounds like what is happening to you. She said too tight is worse than not tight enough.

Please dont have GB. Remember how much weight you have lost, you havent gained it back. I really wonder what these Dr's are thinking when the want to give GB to someone who is 50 lbs overweight! My Dr would barely even give you a lap band for 50 lbs, much less GB. I wonder if they just want to get paid? Its like asking a car salesman which car you should buy (The one that pays him the most will be his answer.) Remember GB is not pretty and I know someone personally that eats around it. What if you had GB and still didnt lose the weight but had all the health issues that go with it. Yuck.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
