I was banded on Friday July 11, 2003 by Dr. Ren at NYU. My recovery was incredibly easy. I walked 40 blocks *VERY SLOWLY* on Sunday the 13th! She is a fabulous surgeon.

I weighed 291 just before the surgery. I weigh between 272 and 277 now, depending... I am a diabetic and I was on a lot of insulin (40 units of Ultra Lente in the morning , 18-22 units of Lente at night, and humalog as needed for carbohydrates). Two weeks after surgery, I am on no Lente, 10 units of Ultra Lente and much lower doses of Humalog as needed-- an incredibly dramatic drop. I am now hopeful for complete remission in a relatively short period of time.

Prior to my surgery, I learned a tremendous amount from the user groups, particularly Smartbandsters on Yahoo. However, I think that this forum is much easier to use. I hope that long term band recipients, particularly those from other countries where the Lap-Band has been used for much longer, will join and at least briefly describe their long-term experiences. Please encourage anyone you know to at least briefly post their experiences.

Hi D, welcome to the group.

I'm a kind of old timer who still posts.

Congrats on your weight loss! I've heard nothing but good things about Dr. Ren's practice :(.

I recovered fast also, I was able to walk to the mall and watch a movie the day after the surgery.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
