No restriction - still hungry - eating too much?!

Recommended Posts

I'm so sorry you are having such a hard time w/the infection.. I too had an infection in my incision on my belly button that was discovered when i was 2 wks post op... what antibiotic do they have you on?? My surgeon gave me Levaquin.. it's a VERY strong broad spectrum antibiotic and I had developed a staph infection in my incision... it did the trick for me....

I was banded on 11/20 and I have only lost 14lbs. I got a post surgery infection at the port incision that is still open/healing. I did get a fill at the end of January (3.5cc on top of the .5cc initially in the band) so I am at 4cc. I am also not feeling "full" or restriction although I am eating far less than I used to be able to eat. I know I am eating the "right" things etc because I helped my husband through the whole process a year ago and he has lost 124lbs since Dec 2008! I am hoping to get another fill in 2wks when I see my surgeon again. I go every 2wks because of the infection (on my 3rd round of antibiotics, now trying a new one). Its very disheartening and frustrating. I feel like I will be the one person in the world that the LAP-BAND® doesnt work for! I see my husbands sucess and wish I could just get a tiny bit of that. By 1 month out, he had lost 30lbs, by 2 months 50 and by 8 months he was down 80lbs!

Hello, I am soooooooooooo frustrated with this entire process. I got banded on 12/23 and had my first fill 2/1, any weight that i have lost is due to my self control. I am able to eat everything but bread. My doctor says I need to wait six weeks till my next fill. Does anyone know how soon I can get another fill? Please help.

Next time ask for an aggressive fill.

Weight loss with the band is a slow jog, not a sprint. Especially while you are trying to find proper restriction.

Some doctors will allow fills as close as two weeks--maybe less, some don't. It sounds as though yours might not. You could call in a couple weeks and tell your doc how you are doing, and ask if you can move the schedule up. The worst that can happen is you get told no.

My surgeon liked to go at least a month between fills.

I was supposed to have a fill on the 10th but because I had a major stuck episode a couple weeks before and because I had lost 8 pounds in the four weeks between appointments my doctor opted not to give me one. I was SO disappointed!!! I had lost eight pounds because I am dieting and exercising NOT because the band is doing anything for me. I have NO restriction. I am HUNGRY all the time. I am just eating what I "think" I should eat and no more. Still only about 800 to 1,000 calories a day. He told me if I was still hungry after eating my 1 cup of food to eat more until I'm full, well okay, I did that and I do eat less than before surgery but I know it's WAY more than I should be eating according to the standards. For instance, I can eat 1/2 a sub, 1 cup of coleslaw, 1/2 an apple, and a cheestick - NO PROBLEM. Before surgery I would eat a whole sub, a small bag of chips, a whole apple, a large drink, and maybe a cookie or something, but now I should only be eating the 1/2 sub MAYBE. I have not lost any weight in two weeks. I go back on 3/12 and I'm definately asking for a fill then....

 I thought I wasted my money, But I see that most people here feel the same way and are still fighting hunger. I have had my band for 2.5 months and lost 38lbs but still was not happy. I can still eat good size meals because i feel no restriction,,. I once eat a full Ny steak, mashed potatoes, green Beans and a full ceaser salad on my first month and 1/2. I guess its based on will powe, After I ate all that food I went to my doctor for an ajustment and now have abot 7cc in a 10cc band. I still fill very little resrtiction and my stomach almost never fills full. I ahve been depressed many times and somtimes think it not working at all. I was told before i got lap-band that it was a tool and will tell you when you are full. It seems i have to tell myself because your brain tells you too eat all the food you see or want. I admit i love food and its like a drug addiction. The funny thing is that now I only eat about 1,000 calories a day, like chicken salad and beans for protien about 60 cal, 3 eggs in the morning.

I am still just so confused and uncertain about this whole thing!! I was banded on 12/11. At four weeks I was allowed to go on full regular diet because I had no problems whatsoever tolerating food. I had my first fill of 1cc into my 10 cc band (it already had 4.5 cc in it from surgery) two weeks ago so I'm at 5.5 cc in a 10 cc band - I still don't feel restriction. I try and portion out my meals to what I think I should have and stop eating at that amount. I don't feel hungry after stopping eating but don't feel full or restriction, I just stop because the food is gone. The problem is when someone else serves me (like at a relatives or when going out to eat.) I have trouble with the portion, don't realize if I'm full or not, and eat more than I know I should. I still eat WAY, WAY less than I did prior to surgery but more than I should be eating. (for example: prior to surgery I could eat a whole club sandwich on italian bread, an order of regular fries, appetizer and dessert with two sodas. Last night I had 1/2 a club sandwich on wheat and about six sweet potato fries) I don't snack - only eat three meals a day. I don't think I'm eating enough either. I don't take in 1,000 calories a day, I'm more around 500-850. I get another fill on 2/10 - thank GOD - because even though I have been losing weight slowly, I feel like a failure and that I'm not doing what I'm supposed to or that this hasn't worked. Anyone else feel this way, experiencing this?

Please make sure your Dr. Understands that you have "NO" restriction. Speak up to them...I made that mistake. Tell him/her over and over....to make sure they fill your band properly. good luck

You are not a failure at all. I experienced the exact same things you are. I have very good restriction right now but it took me 9 months before I got it. Every person is different I required my band to be almost full before I felt resrtriction. I know how you feel I started thinking I had made a mistake that this was not going to work for me, but I am 40lbs lighter than before the surgery and my doctor says my bloodwork is really improving and my health is the most important thing righ now. Try not to compare yourself to others on this forum who are rapidly loosing weight or have great restriction early on were not all going to get to our goal at the same rate of speed. I have learned that the band takes a great deal of patience and communication with your doctor. :o

Four days post surgery. I am sipping as fast as I can and getting NO WHERE near the goal of 60 - 80 grams of protein or the 64 oz of liquids. I just feel FULL. I don't know if it can still be the gas build up (I would think by now that would be gone) but it is a struggle to drink. And so far I have not had the nausea or spasms and don't want to wander into that territory by pushing too hard with liquids. I about passed out today as it was my most "strenuous" day. Went from second story to basement for shower and I was sure I was going to pass out. Looking back on my last few days I have had a total of less than 1000 calories. Am I just not getting enough nourishment in me? Once again a friday where I can't get ahold of the doc until Monday rolls back around so I am hoping maybe someone here has some experience on how to keep energy going. I do have fibromyalgia too and that may be where some added fatigue comes into play. How did you all fair with the goals the week after surgery?

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am back home after my bypass surgery in Tiajuana. I'm post op day 4. Everything went great! I guess I'm one of the lucky ones who have not encountered much pain at all, no nausea thus far and I'm having no problem keeping down broths and water. Thank you for your well wishes. I cant wait to keep up this journey and have a chance at better health and simply better quality of life. I know there will be bumps in the road ahead, and everything won't be peaches and cream, but at least I have a great start so far. 😍

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜
