Hair Loss, Protein, Bioten etc...

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on 9/18/2009 and have been doing extremly well with losing. However it seems that as fast as I am losing the weight I am losing twice as much hair.< /p>

My Dr said it is because I am not getting enough Protein but I am getting more than what he recommends. I average between 75 and 100 gms of protein a day.

I also take bioten daily but that doesn't seem to help.

I started losing the hair at about 3 months. I did read some posts that said it starts then but everyone else seems to have stopped shedding.

I made my neice a quilt this Christmas and it was covered in my hair by the time I finished. I had to get one of those sticky rollers for my hair.

My meals consist of:

Bfst-one of the following: high protein oatmeal, egg, special K

Lunch- tuna, egg, low salt lunch meat, broiled chicken or fish

Dinner- some kind of meat, some veggies

snacks- in mid afternoon I usually have a Protein Shake (35 gms) or protein shot (49 gms) or a Protein Bar (32 gms)

that seems to be alot of protein but I am still shedding. My hair is very fine and it is really fine now and won't hold a curl at all. It was a little longer than shoulder length but I cut it to chin length when it really started falling out because it was really getting thin.

Anyone have any ideas? should I spread the protein I get at snack time through the day? does your body dump protein if taken too quickly?

Im only 3 weeks post op and haven't really lost any weight but this is one of my big fears. I am anxious to hear what others say. In talking to others most told me that it lasts about two months and then hair stops falling out and appears to grow again. Hang in there.

I freak when I see these threads! I am just starting the Lap Band process and really worry about the Hair loss thing if I get the surgery.

I'm pre-op and have been losing my hair for about a year, I've heard that too much Protein can cause hair loss!!!

I'm wondering if you are taking a really good multi-vitamin/mineral supplement?!?!

All of those things you are eating is great...but how much at each meal are you getting? If you are only eating a few bites of chicken or egg (per meal), thats not enough. Remember that your body can only use about 25gr of protein at a time. I have dieted in the past many times and lost a ton of hair....so far Im doing great with that. My nutritionist and I have actually discussed Hair loss and she reviews my meal plans. Hope this helps

I just had a fill today and was talking to my doctor about this. While I'm excited to be losing weight, I don't want to end up bald. My hair is really falling out fast, and he told me not to worry, that it's from the rapid weight loss and that it will stop falling out and will grow back. I was told to keep up with my Protein and Water, also to take Biotin and Zinc. I've been taking these for a month or two and it's still falling out. I'm just trying to be patient. People say they don't notice a difference in my hair but I do. Good luck to you!

some of the things I forgot to mention.

I take a chewable multi vitamen that my bariatric Dr sells in his office and 1 chewable Calcium twice daily for 1000 mg of calcium.

I never ate this much Protein when I was heavier, I filled up on Pasta and bread. Bread was my favorite treat, I would go to the bakery and buy a french bread still warm and eat most of it on the drive home.

I eat a 1/2 chicken breast at dinner, and when I have eggs I eat 2, either scrambled or fried.

I eat 1/2 can of tuna with low cal mayo on 2 slices of bread crust cut off so it doesn't block.

I do eat alot, but have cut out all sweets and junk, although I have been eating popcorn alot lately during late evening tv.

I am losing weight quickly because I used to drink 2 liters of coke and eat a whole box of twinkies or funny bones during tv before the band. My food choices have improved a bit. lol.

I am going to see the Dr next week and will talk to him again. If I am losing the hair because of the weight loss then I might have to get the 2 cc fill out just so I can eat more. Who knows.

One more thing, I did have bloodwork done a few weeks ago and all my chemicals are within normal range and I am not burning protein in my urine so my general Dr has no idea why the hair is falling out so quickly.

I'm losing hair rapidly, too. I'm 7 months post-op and have been losing hair for the past 4 months. My husband complains not about the fact that I have less hair but because he is constantly having to clear the hair out of the tub drain! My doctor said it will slow down, so I'm trusting him on that. I too take a multi-Vitamin and try to get as much Protein as possible, but I don't think I'm getting in all my Protein. However, unlike some people, I'd take being bald over being fat!

That being said, my kids have noticed my Hair loss, and that sometimes has me worried. I feel so great, generally, that I try not to let the hair loss bother me.

Awhile back I googled Hair loss and weight loss and they seem to be connected. I guess if you lose at lot of weight in a relatively short amount of time, there may be some hair loss. Is it just hair on your head? Because I wouldn't mind losing hair on my upper lip or on my hairy arms, lol.

My nutrionist told me to add 2 Tbs of essential oils to my diet. That can be fish oil, oilve oil, 2 evening primrose oil caps, ect. Your body needs fat to operate. If you are not getting enough fat this can lead to hairloss as well. Even when i was on WW 2 servings of essential oils were on our to do list on a daily basis. I dont see why you cant add it to your regime. I take evening primorse oil because it ALSO regulates female hormones, which help with the Kamakazi periods we get from our weightloss effecting our hormones.

Rapid weight loss and losing hair go together like Valentines and hearts. It's more common to lose than not. But it's ok. Take a deep breath... let it out slowly... it WILL grow back. It is not permanent Hair loss. It's just scary as hell!!! I have heard of hair getting pretty thin, but nobody going bald so far. So hang in there, continue doing what the doc says and you will come out the other side. With your normal hair and a smaller body!!! Even my hair dresser says that the worst cases she's seen from her WLS customers always have a turning point where the hair comes back in. You're gonna do great!

I will be one year post op on the 11th of February. My Hair loss is finally starting to slow down. It seems that during this time that nothing I've done helps with the hair loss. NOTHING. I've taken Bitotin for the last 6 months. I honestly just think it's just something that stops/slows down when the weight loss slows. Just my personal opinion, of course. At least that is seeming to be my personal experience anyway.

This is about where I'm at now too, although I think it's beginning to slow down. My surgeon said it's usually grown back or well on its way by a year. Fingers crossed.

I never had any Hair loss and was expecting it. The only thing I did that I thought was different was that I ate Peanut Butter most every day which contains a lot of fat and also used olive oil. I think many people leave fat out of their diet when trying to lose weight and unless you eat lots of good fish you are not going to get the fat the body needs.

2 days until I fly out to San Diego to have my Bypass Surg. in Tiajuana Mexico. Not gonna lie, the nerves are starting to surface. I don't fear the surgery itself, or the fact that I'm traveling alone, but its the aftermath that I'm stressing about the most, after this 8 week wait. I'm excited to finally be here, but I am really dreading the post surgical chapter. I know its going to be tough, real tough and I think I'm just in my head to much now that the day i here. Wish me luck, Hopefully I'm one of the lucky ones, and everything goes smoothly. Cant wait to give an exciting update,. If there is anyone else have a June bypass or even a recent one, Id love to have someone to compare war stories with. Also, anyone near San Antonio Tx? See ya soon with the future me. 💜

I am new here today... and only two weeks out from my sleeve surgery on the 23rd. I am amazed I have kept my calories down to 467 today so far... that leaves me almost 750 left for dinner and maybe a snack. This is going to be tough for two weeks... but I have to believe I can do it!

Hey everyone. I'm new here so I thought I should introduce myself. I am 53y/o and am scheduled for Gastric Bypass on June 25th, 2025. I'm located in San Antonio, Texas. I will be having my surgery in Tiajuana Mexico. I've wanted this for years, but I always had insurance where bariatric procedures were excluded. Finally I am able to afford to pay out of pocket.  I can't wait to get started, and I hope I'm prepared for the initial period of "hell". I know what I have signed up for, but I'm sure the good to come will out way the temporary period of discomfort and feelings of regret. I'd love to find people to talk to who have been through the same procedure or experience before. So I look forward to meeting you all. Hope you have a great week!

I'm so happy for you! You are about to change your life. I was so glad to get the sleeve done in Dec. I didn't have feelings of regret overall. And I'm down almost 60 lbs. I do feel a little sad at restaurants. I can barely eat half a kid's meal. I get adults meals often because kid ones don't have the same offerings at times. Then I feel obligated to eat on that until it's gone and that can be days. So the restaurant thing isn't great for me. All the rest is fine by me! I love feeling full with very little. I do wish I could drink when eating. And will sip at the end. Just a strong habit to stop. But I'm working on it! You will do fine! Just keep focused on your desire to be different. Not better or worse. But different. I am happy both ways but my low back doesn't like me that heavy. So I listened (also my feet!). LOL! Update us on your journey! I'm not far from you. I'm in Houston. Good luck and I hope it all goes smoothly! Would love to see pics of the town you go to for this. I've never been there. Neat you will be traveling for this! Enjoy the journey. Take it one day at a time. Sometimes a few hours at a time. Follow all recommendations as best you can. 💗

Thank you so much for your well wishes. I am hoping that everything goes easy for me as well. We don't eat out much as it is, so it wont be too bad in that department. Thankfully. Also, I hear you regarding your back and feet!! I'd like to add knees to the list. Killing me as we speak! I'm only 5' so the weight has to go. Too short to carry all this weight. Menopause really did a doosey on me. (😶lol) My daughter also lives in Houston. with her Husband and my 5 grand-littles. I grew up in Beaumont, so I know Houston well, I will be sure to keep in touch and update you on my journey. I may need some advice in the future, or just motivation. Thank You so much for reaching out, I was hoping to connect with someone in the community. I really appreciate it. 💜

On day 4 of the 2 week liquid pre-op diet. Surgery scheduled for June 11th.
Soooo I am coming to a realization
of something and I'm not sure what to do about it. For years the only thing I've enjoyed is eating. We rarely do anything or go anywhere and if we do it always includes food. Family comes over? Big family dinner! Go camping? Food! Take a short ride or trip? Food! Holiday? Food! Go out of town for a Dr appointment? Food! When we go to a new town we don't look for any attractions, we look for restaurants we haven't been to. Heck, I look forward to getting off work because that means it's almost supper time. Now that I'm drinking these pre-op shakes for breakfast, lunch, and supper I have nothing to look forward to.  And once I have surgery on June 11th it'll be more of the same shakes. Even after pureed stage, soft food stage, and finally regular food stage, it's going to be a drastic change for the rest of my life. I'm giving up the one thing that really brings me joy. Eating. How do you cope with that? What do you do to fill that void? Wow. Now I'm sad.

I hope your surgery on Wednesday goes well. You will be able to do all sorts of new things as you find your new normal after surgery. I don't know this from experience yet, but I am seeing a lot of positive things from people who have had it done. Best of luck!

Life as a big person had limited my life to what I knew I could manage to do each day. That was eat. I hadn't anything else to look forward to. So my eating choices were the best I could dream up. I planned the cooking in managable lots in my head and filled my day with and around it.

Now I have a whole new big, bigger, biggest, best days ever. I am out there with those skinny people doing stuff i could never have dreamt of. Food is now an after thought. It doesn't consume my day. I still enjoy the good home cooked food but I eat smaller portions. I leave food on my plate when I am full. I can no longer hear my mother's voice saying eat it all up, ther are starving children in Africa who would want that!

I still cook for family feasts, I love cooking. I still do holidays but I have changed from the All inclusive drinking and eating everything everyday kind to Self catering accommodation. This gives me the choice of cooking or eating out as I choose. I rarely drink anymore as I usually travel alone now and I feel I need to keep aware of my surroundings.

I don't know at what point my life expanded, was it when I lost 100 pounds? Was it when I left my walking stick at home ? Was it when I said yes to an outing instead of finding an excuse to stay home ? i look back at my last five years and wonder how loosing weight has made such a difference. Be ready to amaze yourself.

BTW, the liquid diet sucks, one more day and you are over the worst. You can do it.
