Abdominal Pain when laughing, sneezing, coughing, etc.

Recommended Posts

I had my Band put in 12-30-09. After the first couple days the initial pain of the surgery faded away. Then the other night I was watching TV and started laughing and the area where the port is was hurting quite a bit. And every time I laugh, it still hurts. Then this morning I sneezed and I got a real sharp pain in the same area. Is this normal? When does this pain go away? I'm a bit nervoud and put in a call to my doctor but today is a surgery day so the nurse told me he probably wont call until late tonight.

I had to keep a small pillow handy so that if I coughed, sneezed or laughed, I could grab it and hold it against my tummy. Otherwise it hurt! This lasted for little over a week. I think it's pretty normal.

It must be normal, because sounds like quite a few of us are dealing with the same thing. I was banded on 12/23 and I still have that issue. I talked to my surgeon and he said it could occur for up to 4 weeks. The port is actually stitched to your muscle, so it doesn't move, but everything else wants to.

My port area was sore for a while, every once in a while it would start aching again out of no where, even weeks after the surgery.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
