Very depressed

Recommended Posts

Glad to hear you are feeling better.

I am on Lexapro (20mg) and have been since my daughter was born over a year ago. I had bad postpartum depression and anxiety issues to the point I couldn't sleep more than 10 minutes at a time for nights on end without checking on her. :)

I am scared to death to get off Lexapro because I don't have any problems with depression or anxiety anymore. I started out at 10mg and all was well for about 8 month then I guess I developed a tolerance to it as I had to increase my dosage because of the very same symptoms you described (emotional, didn't want to be around others, etc). My only complaint is the fact I have absolutely ZERO interest in sex anymore.

I sincerely wish you the best.

Celexa is a great anti-depressant. It is fairly new, and is the only anti-depressant that has ever helped me (trust me I'm the queen of anti-depressants). This one targets a different part of the brain, and I guess it is just what I needed. I was on Prozac and wanted to hurt people :) Seriously, I was in a worse mood then I was before I took it.

Sometimes just a pill can't fix a real depression, it merely coats the symptoms. I had lost 3 family members in 3 years and was really down; then went through a horrible car accident with one of my daughters in which her fiance was killed and she spent mo. in the hospital recovering. The Celexa helps me deal with things and see things more clearly, although with or without Celexa I have a bit of temper if provoked enough.

Seeing as just my dog and I live together, I don't get provoked very often. I do, however, spend lots of time alone and that isn't so bad. I raised 5 girls and I kind of enjoy having my own space.

Finding this board has brought me lots of comfort because I see I'm not alone going through anything. We are all in some state of banding; either working on the process; thinking of the process; or having had it done and talking about things that are really great and some not so great on it. I've learned a lot from listening to all of you and for that I thank you.

Thanks for letting me take part, and please ask your dr. if Celexa might help you. It is supposed to help you lose weight actually, but in my case I have a bad thyroid so nothing much helps. I didn't gain on it however. I gained all my weight when I quit smoking (no excuse I know).

I'll say a prayer that you find the right solution to help you. God Bless.

Depression is a dangerous illness and if you feel that you're in such an uncomfortable place that you aren't functioning and/or are having thoughts of "escaping" your pain then I wouldn't hesitate to go back on to Prozac. As a person with Depression (in recovery) and a mental health provider myself, I would tell you that if you aren't okay mentally and emotionally then anything you attempt to do physically will cease to be important in the whole scheme of things and quite frankly mean nothing to you (because you're depressed and can't experience the joy of your weight loss). I think back to being 140 lbs, in a size 10, looking the "best" I ever have and being in the throes of severe depression.

To tell you to exercise is part of it but severe depression does not respond to exercise alone - medication, therapy, exercise and good nutrition as a combined approach is the best. Do what you believe in your gut is what you need to do because you are the one going through this and not taking meds because you don't want to stop your weight loss means nothing if you spend your days crying or being in despair.

Just my opinion. Good luck.

I was on Prozac for a while. I went off just prior to my surgery. It was a little scarey....but I remember without hesitation the person who prescribed it to me was also a Bariatrics Specialist. He use to help people with their weight issues thru non surgical interventions. He said, "Prozac will help you control your weight too"....When I spoke to him about my choice for having the surgery he was VERY against it, but said if thats what I wanted to do ... After surgery I remember my doctor telling me that Prozac came in liquid form and that I could resume treatment if needed. For me, I didn't resume the prescription. I have had times when I thought that UTOH I should really be on my meds.........But I have been maintaining~ I have a form of a stress disorder. I have noticed that as I am losing weight its getting easier to maintain. My self asteem is going up and I think that has something to do with it. I have more energy and I know that has something to do with it....and I exercise more. Not as much as I should, but since losing the 52-53 pounds that I have, I am a much happier person and I can deal with the stresses of life a lot better.....Im glad you got back on your meds...its important. This is hard enough...and I know that the Prozac should help you, not hinder

Good luck to you~

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...
