Thanks for visiting my blog. Its really interesting to learn you follow a high protein diet. I have so much conflicting information regarding what one can and cant eat. I am a total carnivore ( I live in the Scottish Borders where we have the best meat in the whole of the United Kingdom) Even the info my hospital gave me is conflicting! One section says dont eat chicken or beef for 3 months afer surgery, another section which covers 2wks + suggest eating minced meat. Guess its going to be trial and error! You look fab a great inspiration :0 )

Hi Geri, really glad to hear from you as I'd been thinking of you. Have you been getting plenty of protein? Which food stage are you at now? Geri, did you get plenty of info to help with food choices for the different stages, healthy choices + ideas for snacks etc? I could make copies of my notes for you.
Geri, would love to meet up sometime! It would just be fab to have a friend whose going thru this as well. we could support each other.
Geri, hang in there, you have done the right thing! It does get easier as your understanding of how the band works grows!
take care,
Maree

Hi,
Sorry...been a long time since I've been on here. I have lost only 55lbs since surgery. I was 289 before surgery and am at 233 now. I am sort of disappointed because the Dr. tells me that, that is a little slow...but I also have to admit I haven't been following all the rules either. I just cannot find a protein that appeals to my taste buds....they all make me nauseaous (sorry for the misspelling). So, how are you now? Did you meet your goal yet? Do you have a lot of lose skin or any advise on how to keep it tight? Any advise on anything? I need all the help I can get. Not sure how to move this along. I work out at the Gym 3 times a week for an hour ... but I don't do protein drinks and don't drink much water.

Hi there! Just wanted to see how you're doing after your Dr. visit? I agree with the others that you were/are too tight, but I'm sure your Doc figured it out and you're back on track. They call what you described 'soft food syndrome' and it's typical not to lose weight when you're eating sliders as the Band is meant to work with solid protein/etc.
Hope the Doc got you back on track and thanks for the lovely comment/info. -BG

OMG! Congrats on graduating!! I have one more year to go..smh...oh well im getting there.
A typical day for me would be a slim fast shake. (they have a high protein one 20g with 2g of carbs) Those are wayy cheaper than the other protein shakes. So its the shake for bfast then a small snack a couple hours later..maybe a banana or strawberries. For lunch I almost always eat a lean Cuisine..the steak tips with veggies! its soo good..with only 160 calories. A few hours later another snack..some yogurt or another shake..I always go to the gym after work..My PT has me doing resistance every other day and cardio on those other days. Then when my bf gets home I cook dinner always under 500 calories but it varies what it is...Thats my day...sounds healthy right?? Yea still not working..lol

Hi, Cynthia! Yes, I got a meal plan from my doctor. It's very, very simple.
For the first 2 days, it's clear liquids. Then:
Weeks 1-2: pureed protein, 3 Tbs 3x/day; bariatric vitamin
Weeks 3-4: 1.5-2 oz. of soft, moist protein (meat, eggs, fish, poultry) 3x/day/ bariatric multivitamin
Weeks 5-6: All protein allowed--2 serving 3x/day; bariatric multivitamin
Weeks 7-8: 2-2.5 ounces protein 3x/day; bariatric multivitamin
Week 9: 2.5 ounces protein 3x/day; bariatric multivitamin
Week 10-11: 2.5-3 ounces protein 3x/day, add 1/2 cup nonstarchy veggies 1x/day; bariatric multivitamin
Week 12: 3 ounces protein 3x/day, 1/2 cup nonstarchy veggie 1x/day' bariatric multivitamin

Well for my meals i do make healthy food choices, and as for my protein intake i make sure that every meal i have has some type of protein, so that does include 2 protein shakes a day, but if i don't drink my shakes i get tempted to eat more during my meals... i feel i have no restriction though so i cant wait till i get a fill. My weight is still the same for past two weeks i also workout 3 x a week on the elliptical for 30 min and do weights as well... so that is why i am getting a little discourage...so will see i am hanging in there!!

I know what your saying....my appetite has increased, but still not what it was so I do feel some benefit of feeling full with the fill, but only because I visually look at what I'm eating and saying I should only eat this amount because once i get it filled it will be harder to eat only 1/2 cup of food. My doctor didn't really put any restriction on my food really, but just said my biggest battle between now and my first fill is not to gain the weight I've lost so far....and so far I've been able to hold study, but mon thru fri I go on the treadmill and walk at least 2.25 miles so. Now I'm just trying to make good food choices. Only really getting in a protein drink in the morning and the half of a protein drink mid afternoon if I'm luck on that second one! So how is your days like as far as protein intake and all? My next appt is the 24th hoping thats when I will get my first fill!

Hi there! I just got home about 20 minutes ago, and I am feeling great. A little gassy, but I can handle that. My experience at St. Alexius was wonderful; I couldn't have asked for better care than I received there.
Now I am looking through my paperwork trying to figure out what I can have right now. I am slowly sipping on Special K Protein water; sipping is difficult. I'm afraid of drinking too much and throwing up. I guess I just need to listen to my body.
I lost 33 lbs pre-surgery, so I feel like I have a good jump on this. I want to be a smashing success!
Thanks for checking in on me!!!

:cool2:Hi fixin2notbfat,
Please tell me how you were able to get in 70 grams per day of protein. I'm finding that my hardiest accomplishment?

i was kinda bad with that stage, like you not knowing what to eat, and what will get stuck or not. also my mind would not get past the whole puree thing, i could'nt do it either.lol .i had mashed potatoes, apple sauce, grits, scambled eggs(no boiled may get stuck), yogurt, soft cheese(almost melted),crackers, tuna fish and my protein shakes(8oz Vanilla soy milk, half banana, and the powder). they say you can also try soft fruit w/ out juice, flaky fish and baked sweet potatoes, cottage cheese but i never tried those. i would'nt say that i over reacted with the whole STUCK thing but i never had anything get stuck yet. I'm careful with it some what but kinda need it to happen because i'm relaxed and cocky and need to slow down with my chewing still. i'll have to pull out my papers from the nutrionist and see what else she had on there, but i hope this gives you some type of variety.

Ok so I went to Costco, and well the shakes that my dietitian recommended are the best they had. They are called PREMIER PROTEIN. They have 30g of protein, 1g sugar, 130 or so calories, and all kinds of good vitamins. They are Chocolate and are yummy, easily carried around. I have not gotten tired of them yet. A lot of the other drinks and shakes had a ton of calories, and a crap load of sugar.

An endoscopy is where they stick a tube with a camera on the end down my throat to see if I have a hernia or ulcer or something. It's more invasive than an upper GI. I have bad acid reflux so they want to make sure I'm ok before surgery. My list is:
-papaya enzyme - it helps when/if food gets stuck (trader joes)
-pineapple juice - it also helps break down food when/if it gets stuck
-liquid tylenol
-gas-x strips
-cocoa butter lotion to help reduce scars and stretch marks
-mederma - reduces scars
-heating pad - good for healing as it will help relieve gas pain
-protein shakes
-protein bullets (3oz of liquid that have 42g of protein)
-colace - stool softener since we will be plugged up and it will hurt to use the br.
-pillow for the car - nice to buffer your tummy from the seatbelt
Let me know if you can think of other things I missed but that is my list!

Protein shakes I got were the highest Slimfast, and Aktins, Protein water, Kelloggs and broth cans. The office will probably give you some samples, mine did, so ask. Drink sips of water often. I brought a sippy cup, make sure you do not glup the water or drinks. No straws.
Pain med they prescribed was enough, just take it as you are supposed to every 4-6 hours, ahead of any discomfort to set in. If there is anything else I can help with you can call me 360-5348 cell or email pvtashjian@hotmail.com again mybest, I am so happy with my band, going to do this!!!

Gretchen,
Surgery went well! I was home by 2:30 that afternoon. Turns out I did have a hiatal hernia and the doctor repaired it! yeah! Hopefully, no more reflux. The gas pains are pretty bad...my left shoulder has been the worst! I have a pain pump and liquid Lortab. I have been using GasX and a heating pad for the gas...its about all that helps. I had alot of pain last night because I let too much time pass between pain meds. Won't make that mistake again. Haven't been hungry at all. Been on clear liquids until this evening, had a protein shake and felt icky for about an hour afterwards.

MyraMack,
What is your post op diet like??? how long on protein shakes??? how long on mushies??? Just curious. Are you able to eat anything else during the protein shake period (ie blended soups very liquid)?? How are you tolerating everything??? I'm getting hungier and hungrier by the day and my stomach starts growling. Wendy

Hi.....26 pounds??? That's excellent!!! CONGRATS. So far I'm only down 14 pounds. This all happened within the first week of being banded. Now I'm kind of just sitting there. I go for my first fill 2/4 so I'm excited about that. I also started going to the gym so that's good too. Right now I can pretty much eat anything. I just do it in small quantities, nothing like I was doing before banding. In the morning, I've been having protein shakes, lunch I have some chicken and dinner maybe a boiled egg with tomatoe. Not such an exciting menu. I've had bread, rice, veggies, pasta (not a lot), as long as I stop when I'm satisfied I haven't had any bad episodes. How about you? What are you eating and how much? Oh...I've made it a habit to serve myself on a small plate.

Hi no date yet for me. The lady who does the auths called me yesterday and asked me to fax her my psyche eval and then she would send it in. so i did that and she said it can take up to two weeks for an answer. i am nervous! keep your fingers crossed! if i get authorized i want to do this at the end of them month since i have a trip planned the third week. how are you? have you been buying your protein drinks and stuff? how have you been prepping? how long are you planning on taking off of work?
-
Well your supposed to eat every two hours is what my surgeon said. My hubby made me some veggie beef soup and adding lots of broth and putting it through the food processor for me. That's kinda been helping me from being so hungry. I got that isopure protein and to be honest I haven't had it since day 2. Its soo nasty. I'm about to start on my chocolate soy protein. I think I'm healing pretty quickly. I'm able to keep everything down with no nausea. My incisions are not bad anymore except that port one still and now its just the gas pains that are bothering me the most now. When did your surgeon say you can start mushies?

yay i am so excited for you! i am down 6.5 pounds in two days. i am doing these protein shakes from costco for breakfast and lunch and a protein dinner. last night i made chicken breasts and green beans. i was hungry later so i had a spoonful of peanut butter. i am doing this by choice to get a jump start. today i am going to go have sushi for the last time at my favorite restaurant. my man and i are regulars there and have our own chopsticks and everything. boo hoo hoo... 6 more days...
