..how grateful I am for my band. I was on a cruise last week and was able to do whatever I wanted. I walked all over this huge ship and had no pain, no issues at all. I went onto a small boat to go snorkeling and had no problem getting on it from the dock, or getting in and out of the Water on the ladder either. I was even able to run the length of that long long pier in St. Thomas as we were late back to the ship. I kept up and even went faster than my sister. I've gotten a new lease on life and it's all due to the band. I had absolutely no issues with the food because I was so aware of how much better I was feeling this time compared to the last cruise I was on. It's easy to walk away from the buffet when you can move without pain and when you can fit in any chair, booth, lounge chair, barstool, plane seat, etc, etc. Below is a picture of a very happy woman sitting at the bar at Maaho Beach and not sweating like a pig or embarrassed about her size. Life is good. ...oh and I lost another pound even with the increase in alcoholic consumption over the past week.

Self-Pay, What If Dr. Doesn't Support
kmwheel replied to theosmom's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Don't what-if yourself too much about the whole thing. I did that, too, and gave myself a lot of anxiety. Whenever I do that, things always turn out better than expected. If this doctor won't support you, definitely seek out another one who'll be willing to handle your follow-up care. I didn't even tell my PCM because she was moving anyway, so I never saw her. I didn't bother seeing the new one before I went for surgery. I had already had all of my labs and psych eval done here (by the surgeon) in the states when my insurance denied me, so I knew that I qualified. I just went in for a 6 week follow-up with my new PCM and she couldn't have been nicer about the whole thing. There was no guilt or judgement handed out, the entire office was thrilled for me and told me what a good job I was doing. She said she's seen people after RNY who would lose weight too fast and get really sick. She did some labs and told me she'd let me know if there was anything wrong or if I needed to supplement Iron, etc. I did take in my entire bag of meds that I take (prescription and non-prescription) so they could make sure I was on the right track. I go back in a month for a blood pressure check to see if I can lower my meds again. -
My port is a few inches above my incision. As for the dermabond(superglue) just wait until it falls off. It will probably take another week or two but you definitly want to make sure everything is healed up before you go picking it apart!

Hey all I am 3 weeks post op and I so full all the time. I just started blended food. If I open a can of tuna I can only eat 6-7 bites before I am stuffed. Is this normal? Should I be able to eat more by now? Even Protein drinks. I can only drink half and it takes me so long to drink it. Water goes down good no problems there. Any feedback is greatly appreciated!!! ????

Thanks for all of your advice...I will not try to rush it. I don't have 4 kids to keep up with...my 4 are grown, thank goodness. Hang in there and try to get them to help you!! I know that is easier said than done sometimes. Looking forward to energy in the next couple of weeks!!

Has anyone moved on to soft foods sooner
Bander92210 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi, I wanted to know if anyone moved on to soft foods sooner then what their nutritionist stated. I have to be on full liquids for two weeks however I've that I'm getting hungry soon then before. I'm worried about this :-/ -
i know how you feel. the first 6 weeks about healing, not about losing weight. i too was back to eating what i did before i had the first fill. after my fill, i did notice a difference in eating. just watch what you eat, write it down and chew, chew, chew your food. greek yogurt has alot of protein in it. i drink a protein shake in the mornings as i am rarely hungry until 10am.

Yes, its normal. Sometimes the gas gets trapped up there, it should ease up some in the next week. Also you might want to try some gas-x strips. My shoulders hurt now when I start to get full. I have read that its one of those nerve things from the band being close to my diaphram. I hope everything else is going well!! =) Shawna

Update on Progress Towards Goals
BANANA PANTS! commented on BANANA PANTS!'s blog entry in BANANA PANTS!'s Blog
Jennie - I knew the scale would be fickle on a day to day basis and I knew that having a more global view of the weightloss process would help me keep my focus on the big picture. I think this was my one relatively intellectual thought during my pain-med haze of the first week post-op! I'm not losing near as fast now either and I knew it was likely going to take me a full year to lose my weight, so the percentage has been a good tool for me. I'm not gonna lie - part of me hoped I would be one of those people who had lost it all within 6 months - but the reality is that it's going to take a year. Not sad about this though - I'm focused on enjoying the journey. -
I'm still in my first week post-op and have found this is the most unpleasant aspect of the surgery thus far. I'm fortunate that I don't have to take many meds, just 4. They are all tablets. I simply chew them up and swallow down with some Water. The taste is horrible, but some sips of water and then brushing my teeth right after knocks out the bad taste. Is it fun ? Heck no ! Is it a big deal ? Nope, not if I don't dwell on it and delay. Just chomp 'em up and wash 'em down. A few seconds of yuck that is over with really soon. Again, I realize that I'm lucky by only having four pills and lucky they are tablets. Were they caplets, then I'd dismantle them and get the powder out. I'd actually considering going to a local compounding pharmacy and see if they could do liquid emulsions on my pills, however, the "chomp 'n swallow" method is working just fine. Everything Hurts going down WHY???
mp8btpc replied to fancy huh's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It was uncomfortable to drink or sip anything for me and the mushies stage at first also hurt. I think there is a lot of swelling the first couple of weeks plus being sore from the breathing tube during surgery and the removal of it causes some swelling and bruising I think. So as the swelling goes down it usually starts feeling less restrictive and painful. Of course bring it up to the doctor or if it gets worse and/or you get a fever call them and find out what they suggest. -
Everything Hurts going down WHY???
NinaX replied to fancy huh's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As the surgeon cut and staple very close to the upper orifice, there will be some swelling in the area. This can cause pain and uncomfort for the first couple of weeks. For me it easied up during week 3. The trick is to chew a lot, take small bites and eat extremely slowly. Best wishes and good luck! -
I had been hitting the protien really hard however I was consuming kettle to no carbs. Had an orange and later that day an apple and my energy went through the roof!!! Before I was really dragging.

Well black Friday sales are on and im looking for a new MP3. I see Office Max has a 30GB Zune for $99. i know there are surposed to be Zune2 soon . i see some online for $99 too. I really dont want to use it for videos, just working out. But the 30GB is appealing. I had a REALLY nice little Sansa Clip 1GB but it was soooo small i lost it with in 2 weeks! Ahhhhhh. Well i guess someone is enjoying it. Views welcome.

HI Yoda! This is my third Lap surgery. (Gallbladder removed, Hyrnia repair and now Banded!!!) Yeah!! Each time, I showed within the day I got home. As early as the day after surgery. And like many, the strips are on for weeks and you have to take the ones that wouldn't budge, off yourself. And I wash mine gently. If you are apt to not heal and infect easily, just let the warm water run over them, and any soap that naturally does. Be gentle to you!!!! And please shower girl, that smell is putrid! LOL JOKING!!!!!

Kim, I was like you - I was using goo gone weeks after surgery to try to get the damn things off. 3 days of no showering? That sounds nutzo to me. I can't get into the bed with dirty feet, so I showered the same day as surgery. If you're super paranoid, wrap some saran wrap around yourself.

Yes that is prob my main concern too ! I finally gotten over my fear of being kidnapped by drug cartels or shot by random gunfire lol and I'm more comfortable with the flight though it's not my favorite thing to do but I'm still left worrying about 1) post op complications and 2) I worry it won't work for me since I'm a revision. I don't have anyone set up to follow up with at home so there is that as well. I know they do leak tests and I plan to do an excessive post op diet (with my sleeve I did 4 whole weeks of liquids!) to make sure I heal really well ! I'll prob do that again this time too just so I don't take any chances of eating too soon ! Other than that it's just really playing the odds ! Thankfully only a 1% chance of a leak are pretty good odds ! Lol

well, the day is finally almost here! my dh is getting banded this tuesday the 18th. after being postponed and having to have his thyroid removed, he is ready. im really excited to start this thing together. i just hit my 3 week out mark so im ready to get started with him. the doc was pretty pleased with his progress so far. he has lost 25 lbs pre op so that will make it that much easier. he had a really hard time telling his family what he was doing. his mom turned out to be very supportive but on the other hand, his dad did everything he could to discourage him. i know hes having a hard time with this but i told him we are in this together and we will succeed with or without his support.

6 months out - my experience with my new stomach!
happy1957 replied to NinaX's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you for taking the time to share your story. I am so excited about the possibility of having this done. Unlike yourself I have been round my whole life, actually the scale makes a little roller coaster ride about every three years. To hear how great you are doing is wonderful!! It gives me extra incentive. :-) -
6 Months As Of Today!
mrspopeye replied to legnarevocrednu's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Wow! Great job. Thanks for the inspirational post. Keeps me motivated 1 week out. Did you lose a lot right out of surgery, or did you really start to lose once you had restriction? I only lost 2 pounds this week so I was kind of bummed, but trying to think postive that any loss is a good thing. -
This is a strange NSV, but I wanted to share it. I'm a Long Islander, and I was without power (and heat!) for 8 days following Hurricane Sandy. And for three days after my power came back on, we had my mother-in-law stay over because her power wasn't back yet. (She's nice, but I haven't told her about my surgery - she wouldn't understand.) Here's my victory: During that whole time, I managed to make good food choices and not go for comfort food. In the past, I would have binged on Mallowmars and Devil Dogs. In a situation where I previously would have crumbled, my band helped me stand firm. And today I got my reward: I'm down to 199!

I am currently 5 weeks post op and I am scheduled for my first fill on Monday afternoon. The doctors office didn't give me any instructions, so I assume I can eat my normal breakfast and lunch before the fill Then liquids after. Was just curious if anybody has other instructions?
