Lap Band conversion to Gastric Sleeve
The.new.g replied to vonnegutk's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, there is a whole Band-to-Sleeve revision board on here. Congrats to you! It's a good feeling isn't it? I had my revision almost 1 month ago. I still struggle with the fluids like you. I didn't have much pain and felt ready to go to work after about a week. What kind of work do you do? It might actually be fine to go back. One caution though, my NP scolded me for going back soon not because I was harming anything but because I work in an environment where it is difficult to get fluids (I work in the OR) so she wanted me to have more time getting my hydration back up before going back. But beyond that, if you don't have a lot of lifting to do and you can drink throughout the day, you are probably ok to go back to work if you want. I still find it weird not having a port anymore. I had my band for almost 6 years. Good luck and welcome! -
Okay, I'm supposed to be sleeping, but I am so addicted to you guys. I'm the new erosion on the block, and I have to tell you, as devastating as this is, I got 97.5 pounds out of it. By the time I have my band removed it will probably be at least an even 100 - that's my new goal. lol Anyway - I don't know yet if I will choose to be rebanded. I am waiting for more info on the re-erosion rates. The one response I got wasn't good (she eroded again her second time), and two other posters quote increased percentages - one 50%, the other "4 times likely" which would be 4-12%. I'm going to have to agree with Jessie Ahroni on grads that no one really knows the stats on rebanding. However, the literature from Inamed does state that revisions have a higher percentage of erosion, and I would consider a rebanding a revision. If I knew then what I know now - would I still have done it? ABSOLUTELY!! Will I do it again? At this point, it doesn't look likely. But I will have to wait at least six months before I could be rebanded, if I choose to do so, so we'll see how it goes. I love my band - it did everything I had hoped for. It sucks for me that I have this complication, but I rolled the dice and this is what I got. I'm not angry, or bitter. Sad, devastated, yes. But I knew the risks, and my results have been worth it. I've learned a lot about myself and my eating disorder. Hopefully that'll help me out when I'm back out there on my own. Good luck with your decision!

Good luck to you guys only 2 days left. Momiffivwcantwait. I opted for sleeve because I didn't like that so many people banded where going back for revision and I thought bypass was too much of a gastric surgery for me. Plication I was worried that you could never know what's going on in the part of the stomach that is sewin up. So sleeve was my best option. I hope your results are good. Praying for you.

My port flipped after surgery as well - well we believe it was the week of surgery. I didn't find out until my first fill. I too had to have revision surgery. It was a breeze. Apparently mine wasn't stitched down well and the stitches came loose. It really wasn't a big deal to get corrected. It delayed my fills (recovery and all) and well frankly ticked me off but it was so worth it!

Clear liquid diet

Get Better than Bullion. It tastes so much better than premade broths and they have a ton of flavors. It was the only thing that got me through liquids! Katy W- Louisburg, NC Lapband revision to VSG with DS HW- 297 Weight at Surgery-279 CW- will update at two week appt -
Hello world! I am a current lapbander in the process of getting a revision to the sleeve as of july 8th! I have been doing quite extensive research and i am quite curious if there is much of a difference in the restriction feeling between the band and sleeve? It seems what i have read, most virgin sleevers experience a "tightness in chest" feeling which lets them know their full (or over full) Anybody care to share what they have gathered the true difference between the two are? Wether it be from personal experience or personal opinion? As a lapbander, the tightness in chest is all too painful in my experience and was not exactly what i want to look forward to the 2nd time around. Any opinions or factual statements would be most of help! Thanks!

Tried soft foods... Totally bummed
marfar7 replied to Jessica108's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It makes me sad when I read that people r having to give up whole food groups forever. Never dieting again is the reason I had wls in the first place. I must have a sleeve of steel cuz I can eat EVERYTHING. The first few months ice cream gave me tummy cramps and diarrhea but now I can eat it just fine (5 1/2 mths post band revision). I would be very sad if someone told me that after surgery I could never have beef, pork, or chicken again. Good luck! -
Band to sleeve revision - Dr. Kim (DFW area)
BB145 posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hi! I'm working with Dr. Kim's office in hopes of doing a revision to sleeve. I've had my initial visit, my EGD, a follow up, and am now waiting on insurance approval. I'm wondering if anyone out there who sees Dr. Kim or his associate has had trouble getting things done? I was seen initially in November. I called the sleep study place the first week of December because they had not called me like Dr. Kim's office stated they would. The sleep study place told me they would have to pre-cert my insurance and they would get back to me. Okay, that's reasonable. I waited patiently through the holidays as I know how that can slow things up. I finally called them the first week of January and they told me they had no record of me. Ugh! So when I followed up with Dr. Kim's office for my EGD results they faxed everything back over. I still have not heard from them. I was told that everyone who comes to Dr. Kim must have a sleep study. I had my EGD on 1/4/13. No issues were evident, so that's positive. While at the hospital, everyone kept asking me if I was coming back next week for my sleeve. It seems everyone who was getting an EGD was already approved and scheduled. And from what I overheard (those curtains hold nothing back), they all still had the band, same as me. Hmmm... So, my questions for you who have been to this practice are these.... Did you have to have a sleep study? Did you have issues with the clinic where the studies take place? Did you have the EGD right before before surgery or was your surgery date dependent upon the EGD? Did you have to have a cardio workup? I'm really not trying to be ugly or anything. I'm just wondering what other's experiences have been like. I'm a nurse so I get that things have to be done according to policy, etc etc. It just seems that it's not going so smoothly for me. When I was banded I had everything done, boom boom boom. (I have the same insurance and I feel confident they will approve the revision. My insurance is pretty good.) However, this experience is much more chaotic. If you have story, please share as I'm just curious. Thanks! -
I am having a band to sleeve revision on 8/9/11. The band has never really worked for me. I could never get to the "sweet spot" that everyone talks about. I have been banded since 2007 and have lost maybe 10 lbs. I still vomit if when I eat some healthy foods, but boy, I can down a bag of cookies or chips. I felt like I had two stomachs. One on top that hurt and where things got stuck and then one on the bottom that was starving all of the time. I felt so guilty because I've known other people who were banded and have had moderate to good success. My PCP told me one time that I was "eating around the band". Maybe I was, but I feel like I gave it my best shot. I still worry about the sleeve because I know it is another restrictive procedure. I just hope that I don't feel that horrible pain that I did with the band.

I remember taking a PFT back in 2001 before my original surgery. My surgeon at the time said it was to make sure I could handle the anesthesia without being intubated because intubation makes things more complicated. The revision I just had didn't require much pre-op tests just the barium swallow, endoscopy, CBC work up & an EKG. Best of luck on your journey it's so worth it and it works if you work it Sent from my iPhone using BariatricPal

I have thrown up for TWO years!!!!! After I revised to bypass, I am not throwing up anymore and there are others that had revised from band to other wls have stopped throwing up as well. It is not a mental thing, it is band induced. I couldn't eat dense Protein without it coming back up. I did not have any damage.
-
I just found out today that my band has slipped and I soon will have to make a decision what to do. You say you revised to bypass, did your insurance cover this? Can you provide me some details? I honestly want this thing out of me. I never expected this journey to be easy, but I am tired of vomitting daily and my teeth and body aching. My son told me today he wants it out too because he is tired of seeing sick all the time. Ugh, decisions...

Right on!! I'm glad you are doing better now, not vomiting ... I revised to bypass. Are you planning on revising?

Band to sleeve revision and pain
stacielynntate replied to teachergal75's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my revision on 6/18 and had the pain on both sides. Left was a little more painful as my port was embedded so took my dr a bit of work to get it out. Overall the pain slowly got better each day and by the time I was 3-4 weeks out I was feeling good. Everyone is different in healing so hopefully you guys bounce back quicker. -

I AM NOT MY SIZE replied to I AM NOT MY SIZE's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@Cynisca, thank you for your honest opinion. I have always been a person that dots all my i's and cross my t's. I obtained one of the best bariatric surgeons in the state. He did an endoscopy and a barium test on me. The test came back and showed what I knew in my heart all along, there was way too much stomach left. So this doctor was not only rude, he failed to do my surgery correctly. Even though I feel this is an open and shut case of malpractice, all I want is my surgery done over and for my insurance company and the big group of doctors he works with to know what he did. My insurance plan did not cover revision surgery, but through God's grace, they approved me for revision. Now I'm in talks with the hospital. I told them I shouldn't have to pay another penny out of pocket for something one of their doctors didn't do right. The doctor I'm with now recently became apart of this group of doctors with my old surgeon. I prayed about it and asked him could he be fair with me and truthful about what his colleague did or didn't do. So far I have been very pleased with him. My revision surgery is January 21, 2019. -
I assume they do stand behind the doctor being the coordinator listed it as a finance option but mymedicalloan is also on that list and I have heard horrible things about that place. This is for Dr. Aceves in Mexicali for my revision from band to sleeve. My next option will be Dr. Garcia in Tijuana.

Calling Anyone Who's Gained Serious Weight Down The Road?
bewell replied to Cape Crooner's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
@@longjohs ME TOO--- "emotionally" attached to some of my old big clothes. Made me smile. I really like some of my big girl clothes AND I have some fond memories of places I went in them. I'm keeping a few. But to the topic of weight gain after WLS. I had a lap-band in 2006, lost 75 pounds and over 6 years slowly gained it all back and then 15 more pounds. I had a terrible time with the lap-band, had it replaced early on after a erosion, hurt all the time, finally had to have a total unfill and it still hurt. I could only eat soft foods. A piece of chicken would send me into serious stomach pains all day. Jump to Jan 2015-lap band revision to sleeve. The sleeve is a much better WLS for me. I am not in constant pain. I'm 10 pounds below my lowest with Lapband. I'm 64 yrs old and I know this is my last chance. I am very serious about changing my eating habits and way of life. So I am following the food plans pretty much to a tee. I don't eat sweets and rarely bread/potatoes/starchy stuff. My worst slip-somedays-I eat 2 apples instead of one and an extra piece of cheese. This is my new way of life. I plan to keep this weight off no matter what it takes. It's life or death. At age 64, it's real. -
Sleeve vs. Band problems when eating.
CowgirlJane replied to LaydeeK's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had the band for 10 years and I felt like I was always hungry, but eating dense Protein often made me feel pain or discomfort. Since I knew that revisions might not lose weight as well, I talked alot to the nutritionalist about this. She started me down the path of not thinking about "full" or "too much". Rather I was to practice stopping eating when no longer hungry. Now, that was a new concept! So, I suggest that once you are on solid foods you start thinking that way - absence of hunger, not full. I have vomited a few times since being sleeved, each time it was from inhaling food too fast. I don't know about foamies or any of that... I am 2.5 years out and have not experienced those things. Small quantities of dense protein and veggies, follow the guidelines and you will likely feel satiated. A couple of caveats... first 6 weeks, I ate by the measuring spoon and clock - while your stomach is healing you can't trust the "signals". Also, acid can feel like hunger so be sure you are on a PPI the first few months at least while your body adjusts to a small tummy. -
Revision Surgery Weight Loss...
PEvette posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
When I was talking to my surgeon on yesterday, he told me that the range of weight loss was between 60-80% He told me that because I have a band and it has been in for almost 7 years the top of my stomach (my pouch) is probably expanded some ( it has a little) he said that it would effect the amount of weight I would lose with the Sleeve, he expects me to be more to the 60% end of the percentage.... My question is, is there any revisioners who have achieved the 80% mark, I truly believe I can get to the 80% (I know how I am when my back is against the wall, I'm a fighter) and I am praying I can lose 100% of my excess weight, I'm starting now... I just would like to hear from you... thanks -
I found experimentation to be the best thing. An egg mixes well with tuna and makes a nice patty with a little olive oil. Sprinkle some salt on it and u have a crispy tuna patty - tons of protein too. Maybe some crab meat? Shrimp sautéed in a little butter and seasoned well? Salmon patties? Chicken salad? It's not the meat that won't sit well, it's the DRY meat. Add some moisture with butter, gravy, etc. make it more medium than well done. The point behind no corn or enriched flower the first couple months in the more successful programs is because our bodies NEED protein and theirs ZERO need for enriched flour and corn. Some of these programs around are nothing more than herding fat people thru a turnstile and knowing they will be back for revisions. Do some research. Don't eat enriched flour or corn. Don't drink alcohol, etc etc. Make smart decisions.

Kalipso2 replied to adorablentx's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
i was banded in 2008 and lost 100% of my goal weight.... then my band slipped and i got down to a very skeletal weight before having the revision. i didn't know if is should have the revision because i don't need to lose any weight BUT i need help maintaining. i'm 2 weeks post-op and i don't follow the "normal" post-op diet because i can't really afford to lose a lot of weight so i eat as many calories as i can. hopefully i made the right choice! -
For Exbandsters Who Have Had Positive Weight Loss
BB145 replied to adorablentx's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was banded April 2008 and did pretty well as long as my band was tight. I either had too much restriction or not enough. There was really never a happy medium. I spent a lot of my time spitting up what I ate. liquids were even hard to get down most days. I was chronically dehydrated, in my opinion. I lost weight, but I don't feel I was healthy. I didn't eat enough veggies and fruits. I lost around 90 pounds in about 3 years. I was so desperate to lose weight and since I appeared to be having "success", I didn't fix the problem. Over the last several months I have lost pretty much all restriction and have gained weight. I'm thinking I probably have a leak. I have also had some shooting pains in my port area very recently. I've been trying to do it by myself the last several months which is completely asinine because if I could have done it myself, I wouldn't have needed WLS in the first place. How many times over the countless years have I gained and lost the same 80 pounds "on my own"? Too many to count. I'm completely disgusted, mostly with myself, and ashamed. I haven't gained all the weight back, but I can't believe I'm here again. I swore I would never be here again. I've just begun to look into the sleeve. I also swore I would never have a WLS that involved cutting. What if I need that part of my stomach someday? The band seemed so "safe" and completely reversible. But what's the point if I was constantly sick? All of these thoughts bounce around and around in my head. I'm glad to read all of your stories and experiences. I need to learn more about the revision and how it works exactly. I'm going to at least set up a consultation with a surgeon. I'm going to someone else as I didn't care for my band surgeon or his staff. Regardless of whether I have a revision, I know I need to get checked out. I welcome any feedback and/or input. Thanks!
