Phase 1: Getting insurance approval
john-mke posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’d like to share my experience with getting insurance approval, in case it helps anyone out. For the past 5 years I’ve been struggling with Type 2 Diabetes starting out at a 10.8% A1C in late 2009 with a BMI of 35.8. This was a life changing event for me, so I kicked into gear and did really well getting my weight down to 263, BMI down to 33.3 and A1C of 6.1%. I always knew what foods to eat as my Sister is a dietician, but man, I love cheeseburgers. I cut them out, moved on to low fat foods and lots of walking which worked really well. After 6 months of focus on my health I lost my job, picked up another one quickly but that seemed to be enough for me to tell myself I could get back on the cheeseburgers. By the end of 2010, I was back up to 278 and a BMI of 35.2. My BMI continued to hover between 36 & 36 up until 2014 when I asked my Doctor about the benefits of RNY for Diabetes management. He was surprised I asked and referred me to the Gastric team. I had an initial Surgeon consultation in Feb, 2015 in which he explained the process and benefits of RNY for Diabetes management. I was very excited, but now I had to go through a 6-month journey on supervised weight loss, which so many of us get a little bummed about but I went through the program. I found it extremely beneficial as you concentrate on changing your habits. I gave up a couple of vices; sodas and fast food, but I needed to maintain a 35 BMI. Whoa, 6 months up and now it time to submit the paperwork. I’ve dotted all of the I’s and crossed all the T’s and I’m ready. I was so excited and then my letter came in the mail – Denied. WHAT? I’ve done everything, but wait, there are more rules that you don’t know about. My BMI had to stay above 35 for 3 straight years and I needed evidence of addition weights loss attempts. Turns out my BMI dipped down below 35 on a few occasions at my recorded height. Life saver, I shrunk a half an inch since they recorded my height some twenty years ago. Now this is where having a great relationship with your primary physician really helps. He wrote a letter detailing everything, my height was incorrect, I attempted to lose weight under his supervision and he documented all of my co-morbidities. AWESOME! Yesterday, I received the phone call I’ve been waiting 2 months for. I have been approved and Phase 2 – Surgery will be scheduled shortly. Trust your medical team and good things will happen. Tonight it’s chicken on the grill, No Cheeseburger! -

Mine hurts if I start to eat to fast. If it happens, I just put my spoon down and wait several minutes until I try eating again

I usually keep a fairly healthy diet but my main problem is that even when full I often don't feel satisfied. It's as if my body wants something that just isn't in what I'm eating. It's like I need a cigarette real bad only with food. As a result I tend to eat a lot of different stuff until I eventually feel satisfied. My concern is that with the band I will fill up fast but still have that nagging feeling of not being satisfied with what I've eaten. I hope you guys will tell me that this wont be a problem. I'd hate to feel like I'm starving to death with a full stomach.

After almost 10 years of battling with insurance companies and a long growing list of medical problems, the day has finally arrived. I'm 31 years old and take more mediations than both of my parents combined (and they take a lot). The process is moving so fast that it's all surreal. I'm super nervous and excited. I can't sleep just counting down the days. :-) Thank you ladies for all your success stories, they have been very inspirational and have kept my spirits up not to quit trying. I will continue to check in as I'm sure I will need a lot of guidance through the journey of my new life.

My surgery is Jan 20th... I haven't seen anybody I will be sharing that surgery date with. Anyway, I am freakin out... Can everyone state their positive experiences. I see negative comments (maybe I am just focusing on them) and I am kinda scared with my surgery fast approaching. Thank you

I'm a week out from sleeve. It sounds a lot like my first few days. One thing I found was that warm liquids seemed to help because they did not stop in my chest. I still have some of the pain when I eat (drink) too fast but nothing like the first 3 days when my chest really hurt from the gas.

Banded 05/01/09 and discouraged already
bubbadurham replied to tmbennett8's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
the other day my brother in law pointed someting out to me that I think is valid for all of us to consider. He said that he notices I get full fast. but when there is a lot of food around and its a social event I will eat non stop the entire time. I guess I didnt notice it. I have had a hard time getting the weight off and I was banded in december. Take a paper and pen and if needs be a scale and weigh everything and write it down. when I do it I say holy crap I snuck some in here and there and it amounts to being enough to put a hitch in my get up -
Weight Loss Pre-surgery - doctor required
Tinainjax replied to CurvyMom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Do a cleanse with mag 7, ballerina tea, or any other cleanse you like to use that should shed at least 5 or more pounds. Then I did about 500 -1000 calories a day (fresh smoothies help) and did hitt cardio wrapped up for 5 of the days. Also water fasted the last day and a half. This helped me drop 14 in a little less than 2 weeks -
DEFECTIVE SLEEVE?????
Raine replied to italianlady13's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
What everyone said above. I healed well and fast after my initial complications in the hospital. I had a stall that lasted forever too. You will feel the restriction like everyone says once you can eat actual food. -
I too have the issue with eating fast... and I really think it may be because of where I eat.

SInce I moved into my own place last April, I have never bought a kitchen table. I always eat on the couch. I feel sitting at a table alone seems stupid for me. Though I do not think it is sabatoging me. I put my food on my plate and don't get up for anymore, just put my dish away. Though I still eat to fast, and I think that may have something to do with eating on the couch, but I am working on that.

Pre-op Appointmet with my Surgeon
Billy363627 replied to meggiep's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
you can start when every you want. Just call your doctor and tell him that you are planning a family thing and that your not starting your liquids until afterwards. He may move your date a couple of days but the girls in the office do understand that we are human and things happen.. I will give you some advice be very dedicated to your liquids. It will be hard as hell for the first 3 days but it is well worth it. The better you do on liquids right now is the better your going to do after surgery. Also get with doc and get started on a ppi (previcid,protonics,zantac..etc)if your not on one right now. It is awesome he is using a 32 bungie on you. it makes a small sleeve. The sutures make the sleeve tighter also. I am soo excited for you. this truly as been the most awesome thing I have ever done for myself. It has helped me with my self esteem as well as the way I look at myself as a whole. I wish you soo much good luck and a fast recovery. -
Tricare...friend or foe?
tylee72198 replied to d1marie's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have Tricare Prime South, and I was approved within 1 day of the surgeons submitting it. I was actually shocked I got approval that fast. I have high blood pressure and am pre-diabetic. From what I could figure for the 200%, you take the ideal weight and multiply it by 2. That should give you the 200% number. If you are over that, then you are over 200%. -
I was put on a 14 day liquid diet to shrink my liver. I was allowed up to 5 slim fast shakes a day. I was able to subsititue one shake with low fat soup. They had to be chunk free. The first few days were rough, but then I got used to it. I liked not having to figure out what I was going to eat. Plus, it was a great jump start for weight loss. GOOD LUCK!

It took me 4 months to lose 40 pounds, yet I'm not griping. Your weight loss journey is a marathon, not a sprint. Slow and steady wins the race, while fast and crass won't last. The final result is more important than the speed at which we lose the weight. I've lost 100 pounds, attained my goal weight, and have managed to keep the weight off. That's what's important. Good luck to you.

I saw my surgeon yesterday and we decided on lap band instead of gastric. I just wasn't at peace with gastric. I am so afraid I made a mistake . My BMI is 56. I had lost 115lbs. on a liguid fast 2 years ago. I put it all back on plus 20 lbs. I am so afraid I won't lose enough. I guess I will just have to be patient. Thanks for listening. Kathy

I just threw them up its the first time since I had the surgery that I vommited. I don't think it's a stricture I ate chicken breast last night with no problems and liquids go down fine. I'm guess I didn't chew good enough or ate too fast. I was watching tv so probably wasn't paying attention.

hi all, I am moving onto soft foods and then regular foods. I had a bit of pain for about 5 minutes today after eating something too fast. Now I am really anxious about anything more than puree and hurting my pouch. Did anyone have anxiety about moving to the next step in your diet? surgery date 1/17/17

Career Opportunity Question
RobinGirl replied to Blondie638's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The sad truth is that yes it does matter. Many will deny it, but it mostly occurs in the subconcious and they won't admit it. Like healthydreams, I too lost about 45 pounds a couple years ago. During that time I was promoted and given a hefty raise. A couple years later and in a new job I put on the weight again. Guess who was laid off? I was. I'm sure that my weight didn't cause the lay off, but during that time I had a couple sexist male clients and they obviously preferred the younger thinner account reps that were on my team even though I was the more experienced rep. So with that, I wasn't a client favorite and when they had to let 20% of the staff go, they kept the more attractive reps. It's how it goes. Fast forward to now and I'm almost back to my 40 pound smaller figure and in a new job. Go figure - literally. Also - obesity is not protected by any of the equal opportunity or ADA laws. They can discriminate for being too fat. Sad, very sad. -
