It's ok to have a freak out moment. Maintaining and eating more calories is a whole new mind set. Your surgery restriction is still good at 6/7 months out. Your restriction may feel less after your first year. Check with your dietician and see if they would approve liquid sources. I drink liquid carbs to increase my intake for distance running. look into body building weight gain/muscle mass protein shakes. The macros are much different than bariatric shakes. Had reflux pre-op, mostly due to a hernia that was fixed during surgery. Post-sleeve, no issues ... but still on meds to make sure. At 9 months out Doc is starting to wean me off of them. I also have a spine injury ... nerve pain with radiation and neuropathy in my left leg. Was pretty debilitating for the past 5 years & even did a stint in an intensive rehabilitation program. I lost pretty rapidly with my sleeve -- down 120 lbs in just over a year (9 months of that post-op). The weight loss has taken a great deal of pressure off my spine & I have seen a dramatic improvement. Don't let the thoughts of other sway you though. Everyone's journey is personal. Talk to your surgeon & lay out your pros/cons for each WLS, then see what he says. Mine was more than willing to discuss & debate it with me until I reached a decision.

Been of the pain meds since yesterday at 9am. Water sucks and taste like metal. Got some flavoring and it is helping. Tried power aid zero and leaves a bad after taste. Broth is good but strong. Tried chicken noodle soup and strained the broth out and love it! A real treat! Jello is good, milk is good. Walked 3 blocks today and feel good! Going to keep increasing the length. Is it really true you get a runny nose when you are getting full? Two weeks prep weighted 331, day of surgery weight was 314, day after was 320. Said that the IV fluids cause that and some people gain up to 10 lbs. appointment Friday for 1st post op appointment.

weighing yourself so often in a short time doesnt help your positive thoughts. your body will go up and down and up and down and so on all the time on a daily basis. (eating, drinking, peeing, etc). and for a variety of reasons. how about you just weighing (once a week)? i think that would take some ease off your thought processing. (eating like a bird wont make you lose weight. eating lean protein and not over a cup at a time will). and lastly, are your clothes looser? are they? have you bought smaller sizes? are you feeling better? why dont you judge your weight loss success by that instead of scale numbers.... you are doing great. just stop beating yourself up please. all the best my friend.

Who was the first to compliment you on your weight loss??
1RockinMom posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think this will be kinda neat to hear about "first compliment" stories. My first compliment came from the maintenance man at the college I attend. I was getting on the elevator and he was on there already, and said to me, "Somebody is losing, you look really good, just don't lose too much." I just laughed it off and thought to myself-Wait til you see me in the fall! -
Hi Everyone- I have seen several postings of people saying what size band they have...I guess I do not understand this. Do they Dr.'s put different sizes in based on your weight, or how is that determined? Do the smaller sizes allow for less weight loss because they can not be filled as much as the larger ones? I did talk with my Dr. about my port...he only uses the low profile, but I did not know they banded you with different sizes. Is there a benefit to having a certain size over another? As always, thanks so much!

I had vsg on June 15, 2010. My starting weight was 167 lbs. My goal weight is at least 115. And I have only lost 25 lbs since then. I've been at a stall for a few weeks and I was wondering if there is something I'm doing wrong. I would have expected to have lost more weight than this, but the scale doesn't seem to move! Ughhhhh! Will this ever end? Help!!!!

Thanks for your gentle reminder to relax - I am just so excited about finally getting this weight off. Will -
I agree, track the calories and make sure your getting enough Protein in. To make my weight move, I had to have at least 60g protein a day, plus Water and LOTS of working out!

I think I was 33 BMI ... 216 on date of surgery, 226 highest weight, at 5'6.5. My 2 year bandiversary is this month, and I now weigh 145. I was a slow, slow loser but continued to lose all during my second year. My doc said that's what he likes to see ... At every appointment my weight is less (even if only a few pounds) but it is not up and down. I hit months-long plateaus that were frustrating, but I've kept plugging along at my own easy pace, and it works!

Low Thyroid, Bydureon & Anemic questions
Success2013 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I called my surgeon because I have been EXTREMELY sleepy, needing 10 hours of sleep or I'm a zombie all day and I feel frustrated that I've only lost 2 pounds that past 3 weeks and it's only been 11 weeks since my surgery. I lost 15 pounds the 1st month, 10 pounds the 2nd month and as of this morning it looks like a total of 3 pounds so far this 3rd month, but it keeps bouncing up and down. My surgeons office said that since I was a self pay, that I should go to my pcp and ask them to do blood work. So instead of calling my PCP, I called my Endocronologist (thyroid doc). Had my apt. yesterday with my thyroid doc. 1. my lab work showed that my TSH was low, it was 0.032 and it should be between .358 and 3.74. 2. Also my WBC (white blood cell) was low, 4.3 and should be 5.0-10.0. 3. And my RDWSD was high at 52.2 and should be between 36.4-46.3. And my RDWCV (red blood) was high, 16.4 and should be 11.5-14.5. 4. He also said my Vitamin D was a little low for a thyroid patient, but my B12 was high (probably because I take the 5000mcg every day) 5. And he said my Iron was low, but didn't say what I should do about that. I'm wondering if it could be because I have not been getting hardly any veggies or fruits, i've been focusing on Protein. Any suggestions? I take my 2 Multivitamins and B12 every day. 6. I told him I have to take Unisom or Benadryl every night to sleep and he said that consistent use of Benadryl (antihistamines) can cause weight gain and that because I grind my teeth (badly) I'm not getting through all the sleep cycles. He prescribed Klonopin .5mg for me to try instead. He raised my synthroid from .088mcg to .112mcg. I'm wondering if this will help my weight loss and my energy???? He also prescribed weekly shots of Bydureon. I'm a little nervous about starting these. Is anyone else on this medicine? I tried Byetta several years ago, but they made me very nauseous when I started the higher dose and couldn't take them. He said this newer drug has less side effects. Sorry this is soooooo long, but I know I can count on all the wonderful friends from this forum to share their experience or their expertise if they are a nurse or doctor. I hope this may help some others on here as well. Thanks so much!- 14 replies

Congratulations on the weight lost. But Hmm, I am wondering did I read the posting right? It sounds like your weight is at a stand still. I have read that adding some weight training actually helps with burning fat. So consider adding a weighted vest when you are walking or investing in a five pound dumbbell to increase your lost. Also start a food journal it help you keep track off the little food we do consume in a day. You can utilize the free journal at sparks people and track you fitness as well! I hope this help and good luck on your journey. Sent from my iPad using LapBandTalk

I was banded Jan. 7, 2011. I'm 6 weeks post op today and I had my first gain. I made some bad food choices and also didn't exercise like I should have. Its hard...it's like being on a regular diet because I feel no restriction at all. Did anyone else feel this way? How did you get through it?

Hip bursitis a factor for insurance approval???
millyInKy posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I have chronic bursitis of the hip and feel certain that losing weight would help my condition. I was wondering if any of you have hip bursitis or have had in the past and if having this condition helped get approved by insurance. I am 5'9" and 260 pounds and unable to exercise due to hip. I feel that banding is my only hope of getting this weight off and regaining my health and mobility again. Any info you can share w/ me would be great. I am new to this whole process....haven't seen a doc yet but am ready to take necessary steps. Just wondered if hip would improve my chances of approval. -

You betcha!!!! I'm back to livin my life as well. . . It's damn hard man! Lost my 150 lbs and now at times am like a B___?? out of control. . . thank god however, I have not gained any major weight, up and down between 5 - 10 lbs only. . . I stopped losing at 1 year out and now at 2 years out am happy where i am, look good and feel good. . I am livin my life. . .I watch that i don't overdo my consumption however, but I eat whatever I feel like. . . can't eat lots of anything anyhow cause my sleeve was a tight 28/32F so it doesn't allow much. . .I don't do any gym exercises at all! I walk 1/2 mile everyday, working in my yard and do enough housework to keep busy. . . to me that is good enough. . .good luck! -

Hey Warrior...Firstly, well done on an awesome weight loss to date... you are definately a success story in my mind. And 25lb to goal is a great place to be ... You've already had some really good advise/comments... This is just a 'thought' to add to the mix. Now, I might be wrong, but from reading your post you sounded like a 'dieter' ... you know, like someone at a Weight Watchers meeting? Does that make sense? So when you said it was all in your head, that sorta struck a chord with me... It sounds like you are thinking like a dieter too... perhaps I am wrong? Is there anyway you can refocus your thoughts around food... look at it in a different way? I know that is a tough one but might be worth a try. Look at it for what it is... fuel; not a treat - use other things to treat yourself - and food is just something that helps you live. Make it less important?! For me, the sleeve isn't a diet... it is designed so we CAN eat normally... we can have the occassional treat without throwing up and getting the squirts???? I don't want to think like a dieter anymore because, for me, diets don't work. I look at my sleeve as a little vessel to hold the food that I need to live. I make good choices 95/90% of the time, the rest of the time I am human. I have NEVER been a succesful dieter... but I am seeing myself as a succesful sleever!! Not sure if that helps any?? I also think that it is good that you are back in the gym, Raine was right about burning off those extra cals. Could be a good reward too??? Anyway, you are in the right place here... come in and vent, rant of just comment... lots of support to see you to your final destination. Good luck =] -
Got my first fill today! Didnt really hurt at all and i was scared! My dr said he was gonna put in 2 cc in my ten cc band! He said he was gonna pull the air out my band then fill it! Come to find out there was already 2 cc in the band! So as of today almost a month out i have 4 cc! I can actually feel water going tru the band and it feels so funny! Let the weight come off!

food restriction is one thing but u'll know youre too tight, even if Water goes down fine, but if ur having night coughs, night vomitting, sliming even though u've not eaten nor drank anything, ur too tight. Vomitting causes slips. Ive had 1.0 removed due to the above i go back May 7th for another xray to see if my slight slip has corrected itself. Ive not vomitted since the 1.0 was taken out & even though Im sleeping thru the night I fear I may be regaining that lost weight in the interim.

Yesterday I mounted my quarter horse mare without needing a mounting block!!!! Yes! I am finally light enough to pull my own weight off the ground and onto the horse without assistance. I am delighted and so is BR Star Baby, who (bless her heart) pulls both her weight and mine.

I don't know what the moving down stuff means. Since your waist has measured smaller in the past couple of months, have you lost weight in those months? Also, are you doing any kind of resistance training lie squats, deadlifts or even ab work such as crunches, burpees? If so, you could be adding some core muscle which adds muscle thickness to waist while not losing inches there. I've not dropped a waist size in 6-8 months, but I've lost 10-12 pounds since my last waist size drop. I know I've lost some fat on my waist during that time, but I also have new muscle there since I've been training my core pretty hard, which equals no smaller waist, but a fitter waist, so I'm cool with that. There also may be other factors like sagging skin, water retention, etc. Do any of these apply in your situation?

Let's talk about our noisy achy knees.
VSGAnn2014 replied to ocgirl15's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Here's my "knees and WLS testimony." I had WLS at 68 years of age. My knees were a complete mess -- especially the right one. The most I could bend them was a 45 degree angle. For years, my knee x-rays looked like gravel bars -- full of stuff that had shredded off the cartilage and mineral deposits that had accreted around those bits and pieces making them even larger. And yes, I had very bad knee pain when I was heavier and had suffered for years. Sometimes the pain was so bad I even had to use a cane. I'd discussed knee replacement surgery with my PCP, but hadn't gotten to the point of scheduling it. But I knew it was in my future. Then I had WLS at 235.6 pounds. I set my weight goal at 150 pounds, which I hadn't weighed in 40 years! At 5'5" a normal BMI for me started at 149 pounds. I didn't care -- 150 pounds seemed like a nice round number. BTW, I stopped taking Aleve and all other NSAIDs a few months prior to WLS. Yes, my knees hurt, but a few weeks after stopping the NSAID I realized they didn't hurt anymore than they had on the Aleve. Fascinating, eh? Eventually, 8.5 months after surgery, my scales rolled down to 150 pounds. I was at goal. By that point, needless to say, my knees felt a lot better. I wasn't doing black diamond runs, but I was walking up to 5 miles a day -- and fast. They still didn't bend anymore than they had before, but they were a lot more functional. One of my health goals for that first year post-op was to be able to walk up and down my front steps without holding on to anything, a goal I blew right by! I no longer felt like an old lady. So at 150 pounds I upped my calories to 1700 and started to maintain. But I slowly, slowly kept losing weight -- 1 or 2 pounds a month for the next 8 months. Eventually, my body stopped losing weight at 135 pounds. IT WAS THOSE LAST 15 POUNDS I LOST THAT MADE THE GREATEST DIFFERENCE IN MY KNEES! No, they still don't bend anymore than they once did. But at 70 years of age I am working hard (in yoga) on increasing my flexibility. My PCP told me to take knee surgery off the agenda completely -- I don't need it anymore. I can walk as far as I want and as long as it's still light outside. I can even jog a little. Not saying anyone else would or could have this result. But this was mine. It is one of my greatest NSVs from WLS. -

It's a way to jump start ur weight loss. Two days of liquids , one day of soft foods, one day firm proteins and one day of dense proteins... It's a back to basics test to reset ur sleeve
