    Gastric Sleeve 9/28/15

I'm doing okay. I had a complication that had nothing to do with the sleeve. One of the meds made me unable to urinate. It's been a rough week, but I've felt better today. I'm still having quite a bit of pain and I have kind of had the opposite problem. I don't really want to eat anything. How about you?

    Doctor experience

The first surgeon I was going to go with is one of the most popular ones in my area. Then I met my surgeon and she was awesome. She was also half his age (my age in fact) and I felt I could talk to her like she were a friend. That made the decision for me. What I love about her is that she also does "fixes" for other surgeons that make mistakes. She works the ER and does other types of surgery so I felt while she was not the most experienced at WLS she sure knew her stuff. Plus I liked that even though I had complications, she was up front and honest with me. Communicated openly with my family and even dropped by to check on me on her days off. The other surgeon might have done that, but I felt he was not nearly as personable as she was.

    Help Please!

Another idea - would they let you work from home for part of the time? You may be too tired the first week but by the 2nd week if no complications, you might be up to at least some part time work at home.
  6. I was sleeved with Dr Alvarez. The best care I have ever received. Zero complications. 20 weeks out and down 101 pounds. I could not be happier. Good luck with your decision.

    Hospital stay

I have BCBS of Illinois. I was approved for the sleeve and one overnight. That is all my doctor required. Additional nights would only be if there were complications. Would your doctor be OK with a 1 night stay... maybe the insurance would approve that. Good luck.

    I have a blog site

Thanks yeah there is complications to all surgerys and he was just exagerating the negative effects of this one...

    am I too tight?

Puking can cause complications that you don't want. It sounds like you might need an unfill slightly. I'd get in to see my doctor, if I were you. Don't stop at the front desk when you call.

    Scheduling Appointments

nyteacher125: I thought the same thing. All being medical professionals, I was hoping for a little more understanding in scheduling with the Bariatric Center office. My chief/boss seems happy for me, which I'm grateful for his understanding and willingness to work with me. But I work in Anesthesia, and we are require to have so many CRNA's during certain hours of the day. So leaving early and/or coming in late is really hard to accomplish. Valentina: Thank you so much for the info! I feel a bit better knowing that maybe I can figure out doubling up (or more) my one on ones on the same day. No hernia or ulcer to complicate scheduling further. I'll definitely ask about multiple surgery dates, that's a great idea. The Bariatric Center near me is a Center of Excellence, but it does not offer on-line seminars. I'm hoping to find someone in their office who is willing to work with me. The ladies I talked to at the info session were less than helpful. I'm trying to remain hopeful that I can find just one person at the center willing to understand my scheduling issues. 11. Every surgery carries a risk of complications and possibly death. In fact everything in life carries a possible risk of death. The OP provides excellent advice, that EVERYONE should have a will and people who know where the will is located.
  12. Your best bet would be to consult a lawyer. It might be very costly to try to recoup the money. You might also find that hitting the tubing during fills is a possible complication for which there is no recourse. (that is a guess on my part...but am betting it is in the fine print somewhere) In California, that amount is under the small claims limit. You could go that route, perhaps. But you can bet the physician in question has malpractice insurance, and that company has lawyers on retainer. If you go to small claims, you have to represent yourself.

    GOT MY DATE - JUNE!

Surgeon is going on vacation the 4th and he wanted to be sure to be here if there were complications.
  14. When I was banded I knew that being banded was hard but I thought that meant hard to lose weight, more effort required. Not so, banding is hard because of what folks are writing here. The fills, unfills, restriction problems, gas, constipation, pain, esophageal spasms, reflux, pain, all of it. THAT is what is hard about the band. I realized that I learned to accept this as a way of life, it is what it is. Then things got worse in a hurry and with an unfilled band I was on liquids for 4 months. That's when I had enough and revised to a sleeve. I guess my point here is that if you can't get these problems resolved you really need to consider removing the band or getting a revision. I have a sleeve now and a sleeve is like a band that actually works without all the risks and complications. NO STOMA! Just a tiny little stomach. I waited too long and now I have esophageal damage. Don't make the same mistake I did. Don't sit on this, get something done.

    3 year anniversary

Welcome back! I am glad you are getting your health issues sorted out -- these bodies can be complicated sometimes. I have had my gallbladder out and am waiting for a date for LB surgery. Best wishes to you -- thank you for posting!
  16. No I have not written out every detail. That will take a book which I am destined to write. But I have written a lot about my experiences in the hopes of helping others be educated and maybe benefit from what I have gone through. Esp. those who have dealt with a lot of complications... Thank you for your well wishes
  17. When I first started this process I really appreciated hearing peoples experiences (good and bad), so I thought I would return the favor. About 1 1/2 years ago I had an abnormal mammogram and it really scared me. 3 big contributers to breast cancer are drinking, smoking, and obesity. I quit drinking and smoking immediately and made an appt with the lap band surgeon. Tomorrow will be 1 year since I had my band placed. I consider the band to be a complete success. This morning I weighed in at 151.8. My highest weight was 270 lbs. I was 250 when I first met with the surgeon, 231 after the 6 month supervised diet, 218 on the day of surgery (after 2 weeks of liquid protein diet). I am wearing a size 6/8 pant and a medium shirt. I didn't think it was really possible since I had failed at so many diets and diet programs in the past. I am still surprised when I pick up my jeans and I think, "look how tiny these are, how is it possible that I fit into these". I follow a high protein low carb diet 80% of the time. I don't count calories, but I estimate about 1000-1200 calories per day. I work out about 5 days a week. I mostly do cardio, but I want to start adding weights to see if I can help this sagging skin. I have an appointment with a plastic surgeon on Friday to see about a tummy tuck. This has really been a life changer for me, I am back to running which I used to love to do. I have done a couple of obstacle course 5k runs and a 4 1/2 mile mud run. I am taking my son to Chicago to do the Lucky 7k on March 16th. In 18 months I have gone from being morbidly obese to 2.8 lbs from being considered a normal weight. I think I have had 2 stuck episodes. I have vomited due to eating too much or drinking too soon after eating, mostly in the beginning while I was learning to work with the band. I have been on these boards pretty regularly since I started thinking about having this done, it seems like the journey is different for everyone. For me it was a fairly easy, complication free experience. I think the hardest thing for me is that I keep thinking it is going to quit working. Every time I go clothes shopping I think, "I better get these now, I don't know how long I will be able to stay in a size 6". I have had a biopsy and I still get mammograms every 3 months, but at least I know I have done absolutely everything I can to live my healthiest life.
  18. So, my questions to all of you are: 1. Do you regret having the surgery? Not in the slightest! 2. Have you had any complications because of the LB? Nope. None. 3. Is there anything physically you can't do anymore because of the LB? Stuff my face with a cheeseburger and french fries in 3 minutes flat.... 4. What foods and drinks are off limits now or can you not handle because of the LB? No drinks. Have even had carbonated drinks without any problem. As far as foods...I steer clear from breads right now because I have a GREAT restriction, but before this I COULD eat bread. Nothing is off limits if you can successfully get it down. 5. Have you had any negative side effects? Yes. Horrible side effects....my checkbook is smoking and my bank account is depleted from all the new clothes I have purchase in the last three weeks after dropping 40+ pounds! :biggrin1:

    Help! Tri Care Probs

I had my psych eval last Nov. and I am having surgery Monday. But I had some complications that took a while to resolve.
  21. So Monday the 17th is my surgery and I'm really nervous. I did horrible on my Pre op diet and I'm nervous that things could go wrong. I had the band last year and everything went smooth but this is a little more serious. Has anyone had an complications during surgery after not following their Pre op diet?
  22. Your relationship with food will change - it has to. That being said, nothing is absolute. I am 5 months out from my sleeve. I have had the complication of not being able to tolerate more than a bite of solid food, so am living on Protein shakes. I still go out to restaurants with my husband, I may not eat more than a bite or two, but I can still enjoy the company and the atmosphere. I am not feeling hungry, so it bothers me not to sit there and sip on a glass of ice Water while others eat. I am not an alcohol drinker, but I have read that on some programs a bit of alcohol is allowed once weight loss has been consistent. I know I haven't answered all of your questions, but don't be discouraged. Lots of us have been where you are, and we are making it just fine. You will also. (Also, reading the internet, while helpful, can at times be very unhelpful. Don't take to heart everything you read on here.)
  23. Pretty pink, and Lisa lose a lot, thank you for your posting. Would you feel comfy allowing me to make your research as a part of a larger table? Could you send me a copy via attachment to harpsong@gmail.com (harpsong at g mail dot com) and I will figure out how to post it or will use it as a part of the table I will put together (giving you credit too). I would update the info, if I needed to (i.e. # of operations performed as of xx date) or state the date you gathered the info. Or if you feel comfy, you could post your table here yourself. (which I don't yet know how to do here). Laurambers, thank you for your reply and I will include your info (dr name, hosp & cost) if I end up making a chart.. thanks. MsAntiband, glad your operation is over and successful. You won't need a research table. As I said, a chart is a starting tool. My chart (if I make one) would have a disclaimer, "this is a starting tool, to begin your own research, and I take no responsibility for your final decision". To restate, the table would give only facts - name, contact info, # of operations performed, cost as of xxx date, and perhaps mortality, complications (from the doctors' mouth, if i decide to post that). No patient opinions of the doctor will be included. I am not associated with any doctor nor hospital nor care center. Thanks for your concern. Congrats on the success of your operation. I see you benefited from information you gathered to make a decision on your doctor. From your comments, I got the idea that I may add (with their permission of course) a name of a patient that is wiling to give more info. To be fair, perhaps one that is willing to give positive and one willing to give negative outcome info. That could actually be a separate chart/table. Hmmm. But that also means me researching the source to make sure they are not employed by the hospital or doctor.. hmm.. maybe too much work. but thanks for the idea. So, forum members, 1. Please continue to let me know if a chart/table has already been made, posted somewhere, and where.. and 2. Where would I post such a chart/table on this forum if I choose to make one. I guess a good third question would be : is there a doctor or hospital that runs THIS website and forum? Because I would think they may not allow a chart to be posted here.. which would mean going to Yahoo groups to post.

Surgical risks specific to this surgery?

Perfectly healty people can have complications, and the elderly and infirmed like me might fly through it. If you have problems to start with, as I do, you have to be assured that this is an option for you. Don't worry about what could happen. General anesthesia is a risk no matter what surgery you are having, but the risk is small compared to what you are going to get out of the surgery...and trust me I've had enough surgeries to know. I spent 9 hrs. having open heart surgery and 5 years later I'm here, and I'm looking at the band as "a small obstacle" rather than the huge one I've been through. The band is about psyching yourself up for it I think more than anything. Good luck and quit worrying.
  25. Hi Everyone! I have been using and enjoying the forums on VST but only just today found this "Boston Area Site". Great! I am from Boston (Allson neighborhood) and had my Surgery on October 17 at Mass General Hospital. They have a great program and have done a fair amount of Sleeves. My surgeon, Dr. Mathew Hutter, told me he had done 20 before me and others in the MGH Program had done as many or more. 20 seemed low to me, but he was a very well respected Gastrointestinal Surgeon at MGH and had done hundreds of BiPass surgeries as well as other GI surgeries involving cancer, etc., so I trusted him. And he was WONDERFUL. I couldn't have been happier. I had absolutely no complications and I am 66 years old. Mass General was the only hospital I could find in the area that took people over 65 for this surgery. The hospital care was great and the pre-surgery and post-surgery nutritional guidance and psychological care are also excellent. The only problem is that the non-insurance out of pocket costs are higher than most of the hospitals in the area. It costs $1,045 paid in two payments before surgery for the educational and support part of the MGH Weight Center program, but the support is excellent and the program is life-time support. Another issue is that it usually takes a long time to get an appointnment since they are very busy. But most of the people I have talked to say that it was worth it. If you all still want to have a "Regional Meeting" we can meet at my house if you would like, or maybe I can find some space at one of the local universities. Let me know what you think.
