Does anyone know if this is true?
A friend of mine told me today that you can't absorb calcium with the sleeve and it will cause you to have horrible teeth and bone problems in the future. She said that suppliments can't be absorbed enough and won't help. This is a friend of mine that has been wanting to have WLS and is too scared because of all the side effects. Anyone ever heard of this?

Did you get insurance to pay???
You need to get a copy of the bariatric policy. Each policy is different and some insurance companies won't cover the sleeve at all. The best thing to do is call and get a copy (or mine was online) and go from there. Try to find a doctor that has experience in revision. My doctor has been very helpful in the process.

Young Mommies Band to Sleeve
I have three kids: 12, 7, and 5. I am nervous about recovery, but I know in the end it will be best for all of us. I am so unhappy about my weight and I feel it keeps me from being the best mom that I can be. I can't wait to finally get a chance to be healthy and active! I also want this band out asap!

What made you decide to switch from the band to the sleeve?
I am actually in a much better place since researching the sleeve and finding the forums. The pain I have is due to my tubing that cracked and broke off and is literally poking all over (depending on where it decides to move for the day). I also have a slip. I am mainly concerned about recovery since I have three kids that are very involved in activities and I work full time. At least that is only a short part of the process. My husband is very supportive, but the rest of my family really isn't. I have just chosen not to speak with them about it anymore and move on. I have the rest of my preop testing today and hopefully I will have a surgery date soon!

What made you decide to switch from the band to the sleeve?
Thanks for the responses. I am planning on having the revision surgery. Right now, I am just doing the all the preop testing the insurance requires. I have serious problems with my band, so my doctor is pretty certain I will be approved. What I meant by being judged is people asking, "Why don't you just take your band out and do Weight Watchers, Quick Weight Loss, or get a personal trainer?" Ummmm....if that worked I wouldn't have had the band to begin with! They don't understand the battle I have had with my weight since Kindergarten. Any time I have lost the weight, I never kept it off. I have even regained 25 pounds with the band that I lost the first year. It just helps to hear what others have experienced, as I don't know anyone personally who has been through this. The only friend I know with a lapband did very well and has kept her restriction. I am so happy for her, but I know that will never happen for me with the band. Thanks again everyone! I really do love this forum!

Last minute freak out
Congrats on your sleeve! I am a mother of three and a little stressed about recovering and taking care of them. I will be sleeved as soon as the preop testing is through and insurance approves. I have horrible pain from my lapband and I look forward to the day I can join you in having it gone! If you ever need anyone to talk to I am here! Hope your recovery goes smoothly.

That was fast!
Good news! I hope my approval is just as fast! Did they say how long you would have to wait to have you surgery?:glare:

Am I worth it???
YOU ARE WORTH IT!!!! My husband was supportive at first, until the band failed! That's when I started hearing comments of how much money I wasted. And in all fairness, it is true. If you are a self pay, please don't get a band. The medical bills are huge without insurance coverage (or exclusions like I had). Don't give up! In the long run, YOU have to decide to do this for YOU. I am so glad you are researching so that you don't have to go through the pain and dissappointment I have had with my band failure. Don't give up on this!

Change to sleeve after ins. approval for band?
I would at least try and see if you can get the sleeve (speaking from a patient who did not have success with my band and is in the process of revision). Some insurances still consider the sleeve "exploratory" so you need to get a copy of your insurance details for bariatric surgery. Good luck!
