  1. All the healthy carbs are less than 5% total carbs. Veggies, fruit and that kind of stuff. Atkins doesn't let you eat hardly any carbs. Atkins also lets you eat any proteins you want even if they are fatty. The 5% rule means only very lean meats. The 5% rule is in no way a limiting "diet" it makes sure you eat all the right foods in all food groups.
  2. I think it's great that you can get all that liquid in. Maybe you should squeeze some water in there too. If it's filling you up and you feel good, then keep drinking. That's awesome.
  3. You should protein, protein, protein, and good carbs. My nutritionist gave me the best rule to follow. The 5% rule. Look at the nutrition contents on the box - the total fat should be 5% or less, total carbs 5% or less, and sugars less than 5%. It's hard to find great food that falls within that rule but they're there. If you go over a little that's okay.
  4. Yeah - refried beans are awesome. Also, chick peas (hummus), but be careful about gas, eggs are my life saver. Just not fried.
  5. It's not a fail, it's a brave step in the right direction. You can't change what people think or how they feel...Just worry about yourself. They'll come around.
  6. my dr. wants me to take a multi once a day and calcium 2 times a day. I always forget the calcium. The viactiv chews are great.

Lavette, have you had a fill? If so, maybe that's what's doing it. Maybe it's the soda. My dr said no soda forever...or any other carbonated beverages. The carbonation fizzles in your stomach causing it to expand when you drink. Your dr doesn't care? Can you find someone else?
  8. You've already done the hardest part - realizing you needed this and now going through with it. Don't try so hard to convince others. Most of them (especially ones that never had weight problems) will never understand. Keep doing what you're doing, don't talk about it much and be proud of yourself. You're doing this for you - not anyone else.

I was banded on 11/14 and haven't gone for my first fill yet. I am pretty hungry alot of the time. I feel little restriction but I control myself. I've heard that sometimes it takes 2-3 fills before you feel good restriction. Good luck. You came to the right place for support. This site is great.
  10. I'm glad to hear you're feeling satisfied with the 3 cc. I have a 10cc band too and I go for my first fill on 12/29. Dr says he fills 3cc the first time and waits to see how I do before he does anymore fills. Hopefully I'll feel as good as you. Happy holidays
  11. I think the cheeseburger and the fries are both no-no's. Maybe next time when you know you'll be on the road you could just pack a bag for yourself so you don't get in that situation where you have to eat fast food. You shouldn't have any solids like that yet...Too soon. The first couple of weeks I didn't go anywhere without some sort of mushy food. I know your temptation.
  12. I didn't have to give 5 yrs "documented" proof, just me telling them what diets I've tried over the past 5-10 yrs and how much I've lost and gained with each. The reason is to show your ins co that you have made every effort to lose weight on your own and have failed. Meaning now it has become dangerous to your health.
  13. Thank you so much for your responses, I guess it is the doctor's preference. I'm sure I'll find out soon enough..Thanks again! Lana
  14. Tons and tons of Gas-X worked wonders for me. The leg cramps you shoul keep an eye on. Doctors worry about DVT (especially in overweight people after surgery) and leg cramps or pain could be a symptom. If your dr. said its okay then just keep an eye on it. The protein sounds good to me. Good Luck and keep walking! Lana
  15. Fortunately, I've never PB'd so I can't help you there, but if it happens again don't worry about calling after hours - your health is more important..Feel better.
  16. Have you called your doctor? You should just to be safe. Let us know.
  17. Good luck...and congratulations!
  18. Lets try and ask this without sounding stupid - I know there are different size bands. I have a 10-12 cc band and I get my first fill on 12/29. Doctor said he fills 3 cc's first time and sees how I do. Besides it being a larger band then others, is there an advantage or disadvantage in the sizes....Is this making any sense? Thanks for your help. Lana
  19. the reason you can't take ibuprofen before surgery is because it is a blood thinner, as are vitamins. the reason they don't want you to take it after surgery is because it can upset the lining of your stomach and cause ulcers. I try not to take it but I do if I have to.
  20. Hi Jamie, I know someone who used Dr. Geiss but I don't know what the cost was. I used Dr. Garber and I think it was somewhere around $27,000. At least that's what I can tell when the insurance papers come to my house. Have you checked with his office? Lana
  21. I ate like an animal before surgery....After surgery I didn't want to eat for a week, then I felt hungry all the time. It gets better though - you'll just have to hang in there. Good luck.
  22. Hi! I took off work for 2 weeks - the first week I needed it and second I probably could have gone back after the first few days but since my dr. told me not to drive for 2 wks I figured I'd just stay home. Sorry to hear about your lupus. For years the doctors thought I had it too but tests were always inconclusive. I lived on 800mg Motrin a day. My joint pain always floated, sometimes worse then others. I've come off since before the surgery and doctors told me I can't take it anymore. I did take one the other nite though and it was fine. What has your doctor said about the situation. Obviously you need to take something for the joint pain. The good thing is that maybe once you lose the weight the pains won't be so bad. Mine have gotten better. Let us know and good luck.
  23. My nutritionist and surgeon kept telling me to just eat wisely - low fat, low carbs. I didn't have to be on a liquid or special diet. Honestly - I ate like an animal..... HA HA HA
  24. I was nervious as anything about starving after the surgery and what in the world I was going to eat. I was obsessing over it. But I just kept reading and asked my nutritionist and people at the support group meetings that I went to before the surgery. I am now 4 wks post-op and to be honest it's not that bad. I wasn't hungry at all the first week but then after that I thought I was starving. Most of it was all in my head but I just keep eating the pureed, mushy stuff and lots of broth and it wasn't awful. Eggs were great for me. Keep reading!
  25. In my case, I couldn't eat anything after the surgery (just ice chips) until the next morning. Then they take you to radiology where they have you take a few sips of barium (ugh) as they watch it go down on the monitors and make sure the band is in place and everything looks good. Then once you get the ok - I was allowed to eat. (Didn't really want much anyway). They want to make sure your kidneys are working, that's why they check and measure your urine. Don't be nervous - the anticipation is worse then the experience itself.
