Band Or Bypass
Do a search of all the boards on this site and look for threads with this issue as the subject...... quickly this was my reason. I have two RL close friends that both had the RNY one is 4 years out and one is 2. Friend that is 4 years PO has gained back almost all of the 120 lbs she lost because she never suffered from the Dumping and could eat anything. She is horrible about taking her vitimins and subsequently suffered a lot of depression mostly due to regaining her weight after all the money and crap she went through......... she is considering getting banded now. Friend 2, has lost over 120lbs and just had a tummy tuck and boob lift and looks awesome. She stays away from the dumping foods and has done extremely well.................. I knew RNY wasn't for me because... 1. I want all my innards to stay intact and there if I need them later in life. 2. Taking 4-6 weeks off work is not an option, with my band I had surgery on Thursday and was back to my desk job on Monday. My boss has no clue as I just took 2 days of PTO and that was it. 3. My issue is portion control, and I want to be able to get a fill 1, 2, 10 years down the line if I see myself being able to eat to much, where as with the RNY you CAN restretch your pouch 4. Insurance paid for it. 5. It can be unfilled in times of medical need or pregnacy 6. Any general surgeon can remove it in an emergency.. vs the bypass which is forever. To answer the weight question... Just do a search for BOO, JulieinNYC, Neal )OUsooner, and many many many others they have lost well over 100 lbs and in some cases over 200 lbs... My doc says average weight loss is 1-3 pounds per week........ so that is 52-150+ in a year........ and in my book that is fast enough Good luck in whatever decision you make. Afterall it is YOUR journey and no one elses.

I would of prefered to have the Doctors Hospital and especially a private room! The lady they put me with was nice but she was having some kind of back issue.... so she ate EVERYTHING.. fruit plates, french toast ... the full service menu and I was stuck with those minty sponges! DO NOT FORGET TO TAKE HARD CANDY! those were my lifesavers......... literally I had a pack of lifesavers! LOL

TracyK: do not hesitate to get an unfill... a lot of problems can come from a band that is too tight....

Shrinking Violets -- April 07 Bandsters
Good afternoon Violets! Kat: Your continued battle for Kinsey's health brought tears to my eyes.. that poor little baby. I have spent a good part of the day planting all my loot that I got from Walmarts garden center. Everything was marked 50% off so I planted 6 hostas a rose bush and spruced up a pot with some colorful caladium. I had gotten a bunch of glad bulbs free from work. I was a hot sweaty mess so I turned the hose on myself after watering the flowers... The shorts I am wearing are 16's and although I had to wrench them over my belly they feel ok and was an NSV for me. I think my fill is working because I've been eating very little and the scale was nice this morning teetering on 242... I WILL get the the 230's next week dammmmmmit! Monday I go back to the gym and dbf goes to Omaha for work. Hope everyone is having a great day.

They started doing a liquid pre op diet in March. Depending on your BMI is depenant on how long you follow it. I was on the FAREWELL to food tour for months gaining weight between January and April, so I went on it early to make sure that my liver was in good order.... HOW EXCITING FOR YOUR DATE TO BE SO CLOSE!

WHAT FOODS GETS STUCK or give you problems?
The way BREAD was explained to me was that the GLUTEN is the problem. Take a piece of bread and wad it up in your fist pour Water on it and watch it get all gummy.... (that is the gluten) the ball of gummy gluten acts like a cork in your band and either you have to wait for it to pass or it has to come back up, which is why toasted bread acts better. My weird problem food is refried Beans.......... why I have NO idea.. it is usually a staple to those newly banded or a good Protein filled mushie... I 've tried them 4 times in three months and each and every time I end up sicker than a dog. Today I had a problem with almonds, but I was eating a handful not paying attention and didn't chew them up well.......... didn't pb but I did get the FLAMING GOLFBALL feeling. Also going back to the RNY discussion... the biggest difference is that the RNY people are not able to absorb nutrients from the food that they eat.. it passes right on through.......... with us we do absorb but it has to be in small enough pieces that it passes through a band... I would take TerriDoodles advice and do a lot of research on the differences. I have two RL best friends that have both had the RNY and I knew it wasn't for ME.

Haydee: You are doing great... you are due for a WHOOOOOOOOOOSH I just know it! Judy: LOL about your daughter.. WONDERFUL on the inches lost! Jennifer: TIME FOR MAMA TO PLAY! TracyK: Hope you are feeling better! Terry: OK you were on my mind at Price Chopper.. I came home with Shrimp, and that Tilipia fish to try... (I am not a fish eater, but you have inspired me to at least try it) Dbf can not tolerate fish or pork... so him being gone next week will allow me to experiment without listening to him belly ache.......... Either you or Judy posted a good way to cook it a month or so ago... please will you either post it again or PM me. So far today I've eaten those almonds and about 7 bing cherries and that is IT. I stocked up on good quality food so that I will make wise Bandster Rules abiding choices.. I did get some sugar free fudgsicles for treats.......... I'm making taco salad (me) for dinner but dbf had a special request for my fried shells for him to make tacos....... spoiled brat... I KNEW I should of never fried taco shells in his company! LOL Time for some more water.......... back in a sec

Good Docs In Kc
Hello everyone! I wanted to pop back in and add that my step mom works at Olathe Medical Center where Dr. Harlan Opie works. He started doing the a year or so ago, and she says he is very nice. There is also a doc in Leavenworth that has started doing them.. a friend of mine works for him part time.... there is a wide variety of people who use Hoehn at Shawnee Mission Medical Center......... If you are self pay and in the KC area, you might want to trot on over to Topeka to Tallgrass where they do bands for around 11K....... KU girl: I will say that MAKE SURE you check and see your doc 1 time a month every 4 weeks and have them note it on your chart. If your insurance is demanding a 6 month diet, they are obviously picky. I am a regular over on the GENERAL Discussion board on the Shrinking Violets thread.......feel free to pop in and post.

Malley Patient and BCBS! the problem is that Menorah is the BCBS hospital a person must use, and they are booked through Christmas.. apparently, Menorah only schedules a few days a month for the band. Dr. Malley does surgery on tuedays and thursdays... I had the approval letter in my hand by the end of January but couldn't get in to Menorah until April 26.......... and the wait is much much much longer now. He is a very quiet but funny guy........ He has a lifesize cardboard cut out of the band Kiss in his office.. I can easily imagine him to be the very SMART, QUIET, ROCKER Guy/student at KU. His requirements are what YOUR insurance requires......... except you DO have to attend HIS seminar before Darlene will make your consultation appointment. I asked Darlene on Monday (the date of my 2nd fill) if I should keep quiet about our little jewel of a doc and she said no.. cause the search is on for another Doctor to join the practice.......... I think any doctor he would allow to join would have to have the same mentality of the entire staff....... The woman dr is Wanda Kanowski or something.. look on the doctor/insurance board and you will find out more.

Another question
I fully believe that your body loses in cycles.......... the weeks you don't lose pounds you will lose inches. It takes a while for your body to catch up with itself! As for the three pounds in a few days.. could also be water.. when i don't drink enough water in a day my rings get tight and my feet swell. (and I know that the scale will reflect it too) I actually gage my water intake with how easily my ring slips around my finger.
