From MI
Welcome! I too am on the pre-op diet.. day 4 and so far so good. I can have oatmeal in the morning which helps. I found egg drop Soup with extra chicken broth really helps at night. I don't have to do specific brands of drinks, just keep it low carb and mostly liquid (I wonder why that is? I wonder if it is to get used to liquids after surgery??). I don't know... if anyone does know, let me know! Best of luck to you!

**Light Bulb Moment**
Hi Joanna, You'll do fine, make plans to do things that will keep your mind off of food. This is day two for me, and so far it has helped. I went to a youth ballet last night and drove up to visit my mom today. Plan on taking the dog to the mall to go window shopping tomorrow night. I can say though that the food obsession is still with me! I notice restaurants as I drive down the road.. more than I did before! I am starting to think already about what I am going to eat at different stages. I need to not be so food obsessed and put my mind on other things. You are lucky to only do a 2 day diet. I am on day 2 of 11 days, surgery on August 26th. I figure it will be good practice though, regardless. :-) I look forward to hearing about your surgery day story and success!

Those that have been banded.....
This made me crack up! I remember the first time I had surgery for my gall bladder back in 1993 I woke up with a catheter and thought.. "oh my God, what did they do to me in there?" Its true though, they have seen it all! My ex bf had a kidney stone and he went in to have a shunt put in (imagine, going up through the penis to the kidney.. ugh!), he had to get into stirrups!! I thought, anything they will do to me would be better than a man going into stirrups! haha As women (and mostly here we are women), we are used to being poked and prodded

Getting banded on 8-19-09
Hi Tony, I just started my pre-op diet today, surgery is on August 26th. You are almost there!! Congratulations. THANK YOU for the Crystal Light Slurpee suggestion... I think I will take a walk up to 7-11 for one!! I forgot about that... Thanks and good luck!!

Omfg - yeast infection (pre-op!!!)
Hi MissK, I don't think it will be a problem, plus after you use the cream it usually clears up really quickly. Just make sure to keep it really clean, and use a hair dryer to dry under your breasts to help healing along and prevention for future. Also.. take a probiotic supplement or eat yogurt with lots of live cultures in it, that will help! Some of us are more prone to them than others. I tend to have "skin" issues of all types.. You'll be fine.. I am so excited for you.. your surgery is in just a few days!!!

Start the Pre-op Diet Tomorrow!!
Thanks so much for the good advice!!! Today is day 1.. so far I just woke up and had coffee with some milk and half & half (not much..). Next will be a Protein shake. MissK.. good idea on the can of soda in the fridge. For me, it would be ice cream. Not sure I could put a pint of Ben & Jerry's in the freezer at this point... but I might try it after surgery! I also love your online journal!! Today I need to take measurements and a good picture as I start my journey. A friend and I are going to a ballet at a local city park (Balboa Park) and that would be a perfect place to take pictures. Have a good day everyone!

Start the Pre-op Diet Tomorrow!!
The day is finally here! I start my pre-op diet tomorrow! I am so ready to start it. I first had my consultation April 30th and due to a job change I needed to delay surgery for a month or so longer than I originally anticipated. Therefore, I definitely feel ready to get on with it! Does anyone have any advice to share after having been through it? Any and all ideas are appreciated! My pre-op diet is quite typical, Protein drinks, broth, liquid or near liquid. I asked the doctor if I could add strawberries/blueberries/half a banana to my Protein shakes and he said that was fine. I thought I could have some egg drop Soup from the local chinese restaurant too. I thought that tonight as I picked up some good and greasy chinese takeout for my last supper! It was very good.... as was the Ben & Jerry's for dessert. I'm so bad... but honest! The fridge is cleared out, only contains various sugar free drinks, pre-made protein shakes and iso-pure clear Protein Drinks. Wish me luck!

Online calorie tracker??
I really like sparkpeople.com I used to use Weight Watchers online and I find it similar to that. Just about every food is listed, either in their directory or if you search other people's added foods. Good luck!!

I need to find time for YOU...!
MissK, Sorry to hear you are going through a lot right now, and it sounds like you are being there for your friend, which is a very nice thing. Take time for "you" though!! I hear ya on the crazy life though.. lately I can't seem to have ANY time to myself. I just keep hoping it will change. I started a new job a couple of months ago (same company, fortunately I found a job after my position was eliminated), and like everyone in this economy we're all struggling and doing more with less. We just need to get through it! I am actually looking forward to the surgery for time off, isn't that bad? You are making it through the Pre-Op diet, hooray!!! I look forward to hearing about your surgery experience... I am a week behind you... Take care,

Loose skin after surgery
This made me laugh! I always say "my fat doesn't discriminate.. its all over pretty evenly". I had people mention loose skin as an issue/concern of losing weight and I reply back "I would really like to have that problem"! I wometimes think that people just don't want you to change, or they fear that if you change for the better that it might bring to the surface their faults? At your age... you will be fine. Stay out of the sun!!!! I wish I did that when I was younger... you won't realize its importance until you are in your 40's and all those little sun spots and wrinkles from the sun 20+ years ago show up.

Dr Santiago Horgan consultation 2.5 hr
Hi, I am not having Dr. Horgan do my surgery, but I did go to one of his seminars when I was considering which doctor to go with. I remember hearing/reading that he has several doctors who all are there to do the necessary pre-clearance all at one time, which would explain the 2 1/2 hours. If you do a search on this site you will maybe find that out. I thought maybe I read it here too? My memory is fading... Two years ago when I was first considering lap band, I spoke with his patient advocate, I think her name is Natalie (not sure if she is still there), she was very helpful at that time and if she is still there I am sure she or her replacement could answer your questions. Best of luck to you!!!!!

Tijuana
I haven't heard about Dr. Kuri but I have heard good things about Dr. Ortiz. I live in San Diego, and if insurance didn't cover it I would definitely consider him. I know there are several threads about choosing a Mexican doctor. I would find out all that I can before making a choice. Good Luck!

Pre-op Diet?
Hi Patti, Did your doctor explain to you why it must be all liquid and no solids? It seems like my diet is the same. I can have up to 3 servings of fruit juice, but fruit itself is not listed. My pre-op diet is Aug. 13th, so I will ask then.. but just wondering! I would definitely not mind putting strawberries/blueberries/banana in my shakes instead of drinking fruit juice. Juice is high calorie, and if I can I would rather "eat" my calories! Thanks, Katie
