  1. My doc told me if we choose to do Flintstones then we should take two because they're measured for children.
  2. I'm sorry that you are struggling with this tough issue on top of dealing with all the other "band rules". My doctor makes his patients sign a "contract" that says we won't drink for atleast a year. He said that alcohol is liquid calories but more importantly causes stress to the body which releases cortisol and cortisol causes the body to store fat, particularly in the belly. I hope this helps.
  3. Centrum Chewables for me too! I also take a "B Complex Blend" that includes Vitamin C and the B's plus chewable Caltrate. That better be enough to keep me healthy!!
  4. Hi April Bandits! I was banded 4-18-06 and got the VG with a 4cc fill at surgery. I haven't had a post-op fill yet but I NEED ONE!! I can tell my tummy is healed because I am hungry all the time and I can eat way more than I could earlier. I hope I'm not wasting time by not already having a fill. I am hoping to get the most out of this summer. I'm not super-impressed with the weight loss so far but I think my perception of success need altered. I have to remember that slower is better but I want to get this ball rolling!! :girl_hug: I feel good so far and haven't PB'ed or Slimed yet although my doctor said it will happen to everyone at least once. Well, good luck with class reunions and I hope everyone is doing good too. I like having our own "Bandit Class of '06" to keep in touch with!
  5. I experienced the same feelings as you are right now. I had a week where I felt extra-emotional and I would just cry for no big reason. I was getting pretty scared about it. Luckily it passed and now I feel great. I really think my body released the extra estrogen that gets stored in fat or something. Part of my brain knew I was being irrational but the other side just kept making me cry!! Someone else said that anethesia can cause this response in some people so I don't know what really caused the problem but I'm glad I feel better now. Someone mentioned above about liquid Protein. I use that too. My brand is called New Whey Liquid Protein and I get it from: http://www.wholesalesupplementstore.com/new-whey-liquidprotein.html It tastes fine to me and is easier to get down than Protein shakes. Hang in there and let us know if you need extra support!
  6. Great info! I appreciate your thoughts. There are so many rules to follow that I get worried that I'm not "doing it right" I guess the best "rule" is to find healthy foods that I enjoy. Today was a bad day though...I was working through lunch and had to eat with co-workers...I ate the cheese and pepperoni off of some pizza. YIKES! It is so stinking hard to avoid those situations!!! I did good the rest of the day though so I'm going to try not to stress about it! Thanks everyone!
  7. Boy, I feel loved. I guess I thought others may enjoy sharing ideas. :cry
  8. Oh boy, I agree with the others...400 calories are NOT enough for anyone. I have a lot of weight to lose and I started out thinking that 600-800 calories a day would do the trick. My doctor had an absolute fit with me and told me that I was going to start doing damage to my organs and muscles this way and that I was only training my body to save every ounce of food I ate to be stored as fat. He convinced me to eat more and I feel so much better and I'm losing more weight eating 1000-1200 calories a day than when this was cut in half. I know it's hard to fight those old misconceptions about calories but I trust my doctor and so far he hasn't led me wrong. Good luck and let us know how you're doing.
  9. My doctor said the same thing so I asked him why I could eat more than two ounces and he said that some food starts to slip through the band the second it hits the pouch, especially if the consistency is thin. He said that eating more than 2 oz. is fine as long as I'm not stuffing myself. He said that it's OK if it takes 2-4 oz. of HEALTHY food before I feell satisfied. I asked him to promise me that this is true and he said "yes" as long as I'm following the rules of good nutrition. So many rules, so little time!! Don't worry, there are a lot of us struggling with these things too. I think you're doing great!
  10. I don't know where you are in Maryland, but if you can travel to Salisbury, MD you may want to contact the Delmarva Bariatric Center. The office is wonderful and the docs are very good! http://www.delmarvabariatric.com
  11. I have been eating Protein enriched sugar free pudding. I know it sounds silly but it's called Sylvester Stallone's High Protein Pudding. 20 grams of protein, low carb and sugar free. It tastes like regular chocolate pudding to me. (They also have vanilla and another flavor but I love my chocolate!) I buy mine from: http://www.wholesalesupplementstore.com/stallone-high-protein-pudding.html Just an idea for you. (I'm not a good cook so I need to buy a lot of pre-made food!)
  12. Hi everyone! I'm really struggling with finding well-balanced nutrition ideas to fill my daily menus. I'm thinking my best strategy (at least until I get the hang of things) is to find a few days worth of menus and then rotate them! Would anyone like to share their daily menu for a day that they are really proud of? I would really appreciate hearing from you so that I can gain some ideas. Thank you very much for your help! Here's a day I'm happy with: Breakfast: One serving of Special K Protein Plus cereal w/ lactaid nonfat milk. First Mid Meal: Protein enriched sugar free pudding. Lunch: Whole wheat wrap with baby spinach, mustard, lean turkey and low fat swiss. Second Mid Meal: South Beach snack bar (peanut butter crisp flavored). Dinner: Vegetarian refried beans with a little salsa and low fat cheese. Third Mid Meal: Liquid Whey protein supplement (I am told to eat six small meals a day and no extra snacks.)
  13. I had, and still do if I bend over too quickly, slight dizziness. My doc said that it takes most people up to 6 weeks before the effects of anesthiesia (SP) completely leave the system. But, I'd agree with the others and have your sugar checked to be safe! Good luck!
  14. I had a terrible time with the gas as well. I used chewable "Gas X" tablets and they helped. Walking also helped relieve pressure. My worst problem with the gas was in my left shoulder. My shoulder really hurt bad. Finally I got the idea to use a hot water bottle and it really helped. The good news is...it's temporary! So, hang in there and I hope these tips help!
  15. Hey April bandsters! I was also banded in April (4/18). I agree with you guys, I am not super impressed with the loss so far. But, my doc warned me that making the transition from liquid to mushies then to real food takes the body awhile to get straightened around and it usually results in slow loss at first. I'm hoping to be "over the hump" soon!! So, how's it going for everyone so far? Anything strange that you weren't expecting? The only thing I really struggled with was a weird week of feeling really depressed. It was bad. I really think my body was releasing extra hormones or something. Does that sound crazy?? At any rate, after that one week I am feeling better. I'm a little worried because I can feel that my belly is pretty healed and I can eat a lot more than I could three weeks ago. Are you having this too? I am thinking I may need my first fill already. YIKES! I am afraid though. The thought of not being able to swallow my own spit really scares me so I don't want too big of a fill by accident. Well, let me know how you're doing. Thanks!
  16. I completely understand your situation! I tried to avoid telling my co-workers about the surgery for the same reason you are going through. I really have a hard time with people who assume all WLS means the Gastric Bypass and they expect you drop weight like crazy. I find myself the spokesperson for the band almost daily and it drives me nuts. There are so many misconceptions about the band. Hang in there, you're doing great so far. Your friend probably means well but may be confused. If you value her friendship, and it seems like you do, then try to explain to her once again how this surgery works and how it differs from other surgeries. If you give her the info and a chance to be more supportive and then she still acts negative, then I'd say she may just be jealous and perhaps isn't your best source for encouragement. If so, use us instead! Good luck!
  17. Thanks for all the input, everyone! It is so interesting how each doc has their preferred methods! I just had an appointment on Friday and my doc told me to EAT! He said that I wasn't eating enough and that I'm training my body to stay in a border-line starvation mode. Many of you sound like you've been told the same. He said you have to train your body that food is available and that it doesn't need to feed off your organs and muscles. I told him that his advices is going against 30 years of brainwashing and he made me promise that I'd eat six times a day just until I was "satisfied" but not full. He said that his reputation rides on the success of his patients and that he won't lead me wrong. I love him! He's tough, but honest. Good luck everyone!

  19. I had my gallbladder removed about 6 years ago. My symptoms seem similar to yours. I didn't have any stones but I had what was called "sludge". It still meant the gallbladder had to come out. I would experience pain in my right side, especially at night. I would wake up out of a deep sleep with pain and many times a real tight feeling in my chest. One particular night I sat awake for hours afraid that I was having a heart attack although I was only 25 years old! Eventually the pain was so constant that I stopped eating and became dehydrated...I ended up in the emergency room and was scheduled for an emergency operation the next morning. If you still believe you have "something" wrong then you probably do. Check into the "sludge" thing as it does sound similar to my situation. I had my gallbladder problems after I had been dieting (go figure...pre-banding!) The docs said that diet foods (Lean Cuisine, Slimfast etc.) contain high amounts of sodium which can overload the gallbladder and cause disease. Yep, sounds about right! The good news is I felt GREAT the minute that thing was out of me!! Good luck!
  20. I've read that the death rate is .05 from the lapband surgery. Alot less than with GB. Like many posted above, surgery in general obviously has it's risks but I felt confident in my surgeon's abilities and decided that it was a safe decision for me. He told me that the biggest risk was that he could nick my stomach by accident but that he knew how to fix it and then get out without placing the band. That made me feel better. (He's never nicked anyone but he said he's had training on what to do if something went wrong.) I'm so curious about what this lady told your daughter. If she personally knew two victims I surely hope they weren't patients of the same surgeon. Yikes. You're a good mom to be concerned for your daughter and I agree that it's important for both of you to feel comfortable with your decision. Good luck, you'll do great!
  21. I was banded on Tuesday and returned to work on Monday. The first day was a bit rough. It was hard to "get back into normal life". But, I felt OK the next day and I think it actually helped my healing process to get back into the swing of things. I also have a desk job so if your job requires lifting or bending I may suggest taking a little more time off. Good luck!
  22. I have the Vanguard (VG) with 4cc right now. My doc said that he can't say for sure which band will work best for the patient until he gets in there. It depends on your anatomy (stomach size, stomach thickness, amount of fat surrounding the stomach etc.). Wow, you have a tough decision to make if you have to choose for yourself. I wish you the best with your decision.
  23. Thanks for the input. My doc said that eating 6 small meals a day is the best way to keep your metabolism burning all day long.
  24. Does anyone have any info on how many hours it is OK to eat prior to bedtime? I am supposed to eat six times per day but I've heard you shouldn't eat after 8PM because it slows your metabolism. Six times per day means I eat about every two hours. What's your daily eating schedule? Thanks!
