Hey Guys! I had my RYGB on August 4th of this year and am doing pretty good. I started the program at 384LBS, but was hanging out in the 390's prior to my initial weigh-in March of 2020. My dad had the RYGB back in 1999-2000, and was right around 500LBS before his surgery. 20 years later and he has lost nearly 300LBS and lives a life I can only hope to at his age. He was actually a big inspiration for me to get the surgery, b/c I was having all the health problems he did, but 5 -10 years earlier! I saw how it changed his life and he is so much happier now, and I want that! I've been losing pretty good so far, and I have a lot of good days, but there are still some emotional ones as I still am battling a number of health issues that I hope clear up as I continue my "new life!"

Anyways, just wanted to say hi, maybe make a couple "bro" friends, and join the discussion. Hope everyone is well and had a good weekend.

Was there not a psychologist or psychiatrist in your Bariatric consults or team? We have 2 in our program as resources for patients with mental health needs. I’d hate for that to not be common :( so sorry you are struggling! I wish I had insight but all I have is a friendly internet hug 🥰

Honestly - stay off the scale. The stall will pass, and they typically last 2 to 3 weeks. Mine only just broke, and fixating on the scale just feeds the frustration. What's going on with you is perfectly normal, and won't last. You'll begin losing again as soon as your body has adjusted to it's new radical changes.
Leave the scale be, distract yourself, and weigh yourself again in a week's time.

I'm 10 weeks post-op (RYGB). I gained 10LBS the first week post-op and was almost in tears over it! Slowly, within the coming weeks the weight loss cranked up, until I shot past my weight on surgery day, and just kept going. Now, I've been at the same number for the last 7 days, but I'm tracking everything I consume, and I'm getting my walks in daily, so I know I'm doing right. Typically I'll have 3-4 days of loss followed by a week of "homeostasis" for lack of a better description, where I'm guessing my body is just getting used to the new normal.
Keep on doing things by the book, and keep your chin up! Know you've got a lot of friends here and we're all rooting for you!! Please let us know when you make that breakthrough and start shedding

Is it possible that being too low in the caloric intake scale can actually stall weight loss? I would think at a deficit, no matter how small, weight loss would still happen, but I've read that the body can stop losing and try to maintain bc it thinks it's in trouble. Maybe someone can shed more light on this?

    Definitely speak with your nutritionist.
Are you tracking EVERY bite, even tastes while cooking add up. That was a big one for me.
It may just be a dreaded stall. During stalls, your body is catching up. While you may not lose pounds, you may lose inches as things redistribute.

Stick with it, it'll work out if you follow the instructions of your nut and keep exercising. Sounds like you're doing a great job!

I feel you. I had surgery a month ago and have only lost 10 lbs. I'm sticking to the diet with no problems, I walk briskly at least 1 hour a day and I'm getting 60-70 g Protein. In a few days, I'll be cleared to lift weights, which may help. My calories are between 600-800. That said, my preop (not the preop diet, but just my usual eating habits) were to use My Fitness Pal (used it for years!) and hit btw 1100-1200 calories a day. Well I didn't lose weight on that-- no problem following it. The dietician at the weight loss center told me I could eat 1800 calories a day and still lose weight. I laughed. Not true. I'd tried everything. I can only conclude from my own and others' experience that the solution to these metabolic issues doesn't have that much to do with calorie restriction. I suspect t has more to do with hormones and carbohydrate metabolism. My surgeon tells me that I will lose the weight. She is not worried I've only lost 10 lbs, for what that's worth. The only thing that has helped me lose in the past was actual, hardcore weight lifting. Heavy weight: deadlifts, etc. ! I was not skinny, and I spent 1 hour in the gym 6 days a week. I worked very hard to be a still overweight person. I never had a problem with carbo loading or junk food. All of this tells me that our metabolisms are complex. Perhaps it is the metabolism that drives eating disorders and not the eating driving the weight gain. The science needs to do better. Until then, I've found that eating protein like crazy, lifting weights (more than cardio), hydrating, and just eating like a normal person (healthy meals) is the only way to lose weight, and I never lose much. Perhaps that will change, but for now, I really really feel your frustration. In my own case, my post op is not too different from my preop diet. Both healthy- both protein and non-strachy vegetable rich. Both pretty low in calories. But I have experienced the serios weight lifting to help some-- and I feel better when i do it-- just be protective of your pelvic floor!

I’m a year and a half out. I used to drink whiskey and now even one drink is too much alcohol for me and I get a killer hangover. I started drinking wine, which I didn’t used to like that much, and one glass of wine every week or two is perfect. World’s cheapest date.

I'm 14 months out and can share a bottle of wine no problem and sometimes more of the share ends up in my glass. Since I don't drink as much, I've gravitated to finer Italian and French wines. You can MOST certainly drink post-op, in fact my surgical team warned several times that alcoholism is a real problem post-op. I've had nothing but red wine, except that one day I had two mimosas and slept all afternoon from the sugar crash and the bubbly made me drunk very quickly. Life post op is way different then the picture your doctor is painting but use the honeymoon period post op to your advantage. I"m down 125 pounds and no matter what will never let it come back on but I am certainly enjoying life to it's fullest right now just in smaller bites. I'd give up any alcohol in a heart beat to keep my weight off but right now I'm at a happy balance and within the same 2-4 pounds for the last three months.

Short answer, for an occasional drink after you have lost all the weight that you want to lose, yes. The qualification here is that it can be a slippery slope to overdoing it, though compared to an occasional slice of cheesecake, alcoholism is a lot tougher to recover from than carb overload. that's the biggest long term concern is addiction transfer, where what was an occasional indulgence turns to full blown addiction, so care is needed to maintain limits.
As with other kinds of "treats" the solution for some is total abstinence as they don't have much control, while others can control an occasional indulgence. You know yourself best.

I would say this is a good question to take to a Dr. There are a lot of potential causes. Blood pressure, testosterone, medications, and of course mental issues. Ill be straight up honest I had a short bout with this. I was also having dizziness. It ended up being that I had lost enough weight that my blood pressure had improved and my blood pressure meds were making my blood pressure too low. My Dr. took me off and I have been 100% better.

I started at over 700 pounds and have managed to achieve a normal BMI. Actually, for a short time I was below a normal BMI thanks to my binge-running but when then binge-running ended my weight bounced up to high end normal BMI. After 18+ years I am still high normal BMI.
Theoretically any given WLS patent can achieve a normal BMI. However, the average overall weight loss is about 60%.
    Good luck,

Hi! I was not, but there is a thread in the Guys' Room (so please no replies from the ladies) about men who started over 400 lbs., and I know there was at least one person who was near to 600 lbs. and managed to lose 230 pounds plus... he stopped updating, but it can be done.

    Here is the thread:

I use MyFitnessPal (free version). I've been using it since 2011 and I really like that I have that history there. You can create and save recipes you make, you can get macros, look at your weight over time, etc. There's a lot more it can do that I haven't figured out because I'm not great with technology.

I use the free version of My Fitness Pal. All I really care about is my Protein intake so it's really just to make sure I get enough. I'm 3 yrs out now and still weigh myself daily but record it only once a week on Sunday. This works for me.

I track my food in myfitnesspal - and record my weight there once a week (on Wednesdays - the day I had my surgery back in 2015).

then once a month, on the date of my surgery (the 3rd), I put my weight in an Excel spreadsheet.
