IntergalacticGal reacted to Creekimp13 in Why I eat baked potatoes, brown rice and whole grain bread
Yep, I eat them all. Love them. They're a daily part of my diet. Sometimes multiple times a day.
    OMG, they're carbs!
Yep, they are. But they're not refined, over-processed, or bad.
And you know what else they are?
Excellent sources of plant based Protein and Fiber.
A baked potato has 160 calories. By itself, it has 4g of protein. Throw some vegetarian chili on there and you're in the high teens. Awesome lunch!
Brown rice...half a cup has around 100 calories and 3g of protein. Add some bean or peas and you've got complete amino acids...tons of protein... and a crazy awesome amount of fiber.
Why is dietary fiber important? To grow good gut bugs. Your microbiota and the health of your gut (and metabolism) depend on happy little bacteria. The strains of gut bugs that live in the guts of skinny people....have a favorite food: dietary fiber. Feed your good bugs good things and they'll be good to you.
They like to eat fruit, veggies, Beans, whole wheat bread...
Whole wheat bread? I eat this A LOT:)
For instance.....A lite Thomas English wheat muffin has 5g of protein for 100 calories. This dietary powerhouse has 8g of dietary fiber! Smear that sucker with your favorite nut butter or fruit preserves, and you're in business.
One of my favorite go-to dinners these days...... is fresh homemade wheat bread with 16 veggie soup...and fruit for dessert.
I eat about four servings of fruit a day...and that's not even counting the watermelon I huddle over in the car while hissing "My Precious...." LOL:)
A banana is not "a candy bar" A banana is a wonderful healthy food. I eat lots of them. Hell, I have a Yonanas that makes them into ice cream. They're terrific.

Normal weight does not HAVE to mean giving up carbs. It means being carb smart, balancing, and making mindful choices.
More than one way to do this whole thing.
Weight loss success does not mean ONLY eating meat for the rest of your life with broccoli on the side. That's great once in a while, though!
Not trying to tell anyone they're doing it wrong.....just sayin'....there's more than one way to do it right:)

Extreme thinking, extreme dieting, extreme self denial....is not sustainable.
Work on a forever diet you can live with.
Be mindful, be accountable....but be kind to yourself.

I’d find another surgeon honestly..mine didn’t require any weight loss or preop diet. I just couldn’t be heavier than I was at my first appt. hopefully you find someone to work with you. The surgery will surely help manage the diabetes better. Good luck!

A lot of people may disagree but I seem to be in the same boat as you, it amazes me at how many people's SOs on here are totally unsupportive of their partner's wls/decision to lead a healthier life. Makes me relieved that I live alone and reminds me what I do and do not want to look for in a future partner. I remember reading a bit ago that we share over 80 percent of our meals with our future partner so you better make sure you choose the right one who is on the same page as you. I've been in that boat before, having a partner that eats **** food/makes poor food choices while you're trying to be healthy is major strain on the relationship and probably a lot of people's downfall when it comes to weight loss.

First, good for you. But seriously....you aren't even 1 week post surgery and your husband "had" to take the kids and himself for fast food with you? Perhaps you could learn to say "no" next time he asks and start to show your family that their support is critical in this journey. Go home and fix a healthy snack or carry healthy snack options with you for the family. Sorry but I just found the post more shocking with you being 6 days out of surgery.

Maybe I should clarify that at my one month post op I was cleared to resume normal activities as tolerated. You know the saying opinions are like a-holes? This goes for doctors too. If you read these forums you will see just how different pre-op and post op diets/rules are depending on the surgeon or practice.
As for beer "eroding" my staple line; Would you say the same thing if I said I drank a fountain coke? I could understand your worry if I had said I drank a six pack. The fact is beer is heavily carbonated, and like soda, we are to refrain from it because it is empty calories and can cause excessive gas - which you have after surgery anyway.
Why on Earth would I do that? Because I am a normal human being and being social is part of that. I am not swearing off alcohol for life and I wanted to see how it effected me since I was cleared by my doctor. Thank you for your judgmental concern.

just gonna add to this thread! i waited 4 days post op to smoke, and i was fine. i haven’t really felt like i get the munchies (i didn’t much before surgery either) but i always try to get a few Snacks ready before i smoke just in case. in the few times i have had the munchies, this is so helpful. it’s also just helpful from the surgery i think, that i stop right when i’m full instead of continuing to eat like i would pre-op.

as for tolerance, mine hasn’t really changed. (got the sleeve) i haven’t tried edibles again yet, since i’m only 1 month post op, but i’ve smoked basically every method minus blunts and been fine.

also!! i’ve been using CBD salve on my incisions and they are fading so nicely! it also helped with the pain for the first week or so, i def had to take LESS tylenol cause i was using the salve

I had mentioned to my nephew that I wanted to smoke a while ago pre surgery. He gave me i guess about half a blunt and kept urging me to try it but by this point I was doing the 2 week diet and did not know what to expect so didn't chance it. I finally tried it about 3 weeks ago, week 4 post and it was great. No paranoia just a great feeling relaxing high and no munchies whatsoever. I have no idea what type it was but would happily smoke more. I only smoked a bit at a time and it lasted me 3 nights. Smoked late at night just in case it had a bad effect on me, I could just go to bed.

Daily..almost 9 weeks out from VSG. I have lost 44lbs so far(14lbs preop). My tolerance was sky high before and still is. I don’t really get the munchies. If I want to snack I always have like boiled eggs or veggies with ranch dip in the fridge. But I don’t necessarily get them. I honestly feel like it helps with curbing my appetite. It did preop as well and aided with the 14lbs. I don’t really talk about this with people because opinions are strong on usage, surgery or not. Glad to see others who enjoy as much as I.

And that's what makes this a happy ending. Most of us have the "oh, well, I've already blown it" moment . . . and then proceed to lose our ever-lovin'-minds. Glad you were able to just chalk this up to food funerals and move on!

I love this convo! I never had pre-op diet. I also now eat Anything I want , so long it’s counted in my calories. 75% of the time being “ clean” foods. Still haven’t drank alcohol simply because I don’t usually enjoy it- but I smoke pot often... I smile clean dabs from a vape. 1 small Hit and I’m toasted. It does cause major munchies in which I try to control. I don’t drink diet soda because I’m terrified of “ stretching “ my pouch ... afraid to eat and drink more new foods that won’t make me sick- because I’ll crave them all the time. I love Water but also drink tea and coffee. Cream and stevia. Yay.

I'm 9 days out and I hear you about the Water. I barely drank water for the first week, it hurt going down. Powerade Zero is my new favorite beverage. I got tired of super-sweet crystal light.
I don't really feel that hungry so much as I miss eating I think. I do find myself watching lots of cooking videos and looking at restaurant yelp pictures. I have a feeling you're experience the same "head hunger" type thing.

To each is own, if you would never do it then good for you. Some people are newbies and were just curious. Cmon folks lets leave the negativity elsewhere. On a brighter side, I am down form 212 my highest to 191 today. I am very excited about that. Yesterday's pic is attached.

Wow is right. There is some sensitive people on here. So basically all I’ve tried to get out of all this is, is my wife supposed to be this way now or is she capable of doing anything about it. But what I’ve gotten is, you should support it no matter what the outcome and how dare you see it any other way than ours. I’m done here. Y’all need help.

@BigViffer Care to chime in about how us bypass folks can't work out? LOL

Show proof.. what do you want photos of us in the gym lifting weights? You state you can bench 400, well, using your own logic, prove it. I'm in the gym pretty much daily. Cardio, Weight lifting, I had the band installed in 2011, had it removed and was converted to the Bypass this past March. Zero issues working out and building / toning muscle. Just because you refuse to accept it, doesn't mean it's not possible.

No on here is giving you anything other than the truth, that you just refuse to accept. Everything you are writing is just highlighting how this issue, is 100% with you and not your wife or her surgery.

In all seriousness and honesty, you need to get to a therapist, your mindset is grossly unhealthy.

Since your wife doesn't seem to think there is a problem and neither does her surgeon, have you considered that this is your perception, and not reality?

I weigh daily. I only log a loss. I feel it helps me recognize trends and not obsess so much when I’m a few ounces more today than yesterday. I fluctuated with 3lbs during my first stall. Weighing daily helped me see it was just moving here and there and then took off again.
