As others said your glycated hemoglobin type A1C being that high is a very good indicator for the necessity of this surgery.
If adequate changes are made and no improvements after a handful of months occur, and it's acquired Type 2, I'd then be a bit concerned.
My peak HBA1c was 7.9 (well in the range of diabetic), it lowered over the last several months and as of June it was 4.9, making me completely non-diabetic, and I've been off all diabetes meds for months with very good blood sugar.
It's quite amazing how forgiving the body is.

Thanks guys! I saw my doctor and he didn't mention anything and I forgot to ask. Assuming it's all good. Honestly think he lost my bloods to be honest.

Today is my one year surgiversary so I thought I'd blow the dust off of this thread. I had my one year meeting with my doc yesterday and everything is going along smoothly despite a hell of a start to this journey! Like a dummy I forgot to take photos this morning to mark the occasion so I'll have to do that tonight.

When I first started taking a serious look into WLS in May of 2016 I was back up to 354 lbs. I had to do a 6 month program due to insurance. I was at 336lbs starting my 2 week liquid diet, and 318 on the day of surgery. This morning I weighed in at 232. That puts me down 86 lbs since surgery and 122 lbs total lost. I still got a good ways to go and weight loss has slowed down significantly in the past three months. Lousy weather has kept me from walking much and it's been difficult to get to the gym.
Doc asked me yesterday if I'd do it all over again and without hesitation I said yes. Even with the rough start I've done more and felt better in the past year than I had the previous 3-4 years combined. Little bummed that I didn't reach my "goal" weight of 225 lbs. Now realizing that isn't really a goal weight any longer. In the coming months I hope to get some more fat off and replace it with muscle to get evened out a bit.

Anyway, it's been a hell of year and glad I did.

I did change doctors who agreed that hiatal hernias are very common and he’s going to repair it when he operates on me next week April 12th. And he said the sleeve was not a problem.

I had an even worse experience. My surgeon operated and found a large hiatal hernia and aborted the surgery. She made me get a barium upper to ensure it was a sliding hernia and then refused to do a sleeve. She referred me to another surgeon who said hernias were very common and that I should have the sleeve at the same time no problem. My operation is now scheduled for April 12 with the new surgeon at a new hospital and it was easily approved by insurance. Good luck.

Well said peeps!! I have my nails done by this young lady, her family consists of 2 boys and a girl plus her hubby. The very 1st time I went to her she commented that she had lost "HER" weight without WLS> It almost made e want to go to someone else, then I thought I can tell her everything that I have been thru and maybe she will become educated about WLS. So I stayed...and I talked to her about WLS. I really don't know if she gets it but I told her the plain truth how we all know this is NOT THE EASY way out!! We still talk about weight and she every once and awhile she has to remind me all of her exercise programs. just like us all. But guess what she is struggling too. I have a very hard time when I hear people say it is the easy way out. Even my hubby has said this (and he had a Sleeve) now he knows better to say it to me. ONWARD WARRIORS!! We have GOT THIS!!

You can watch the procedure WITH a hernia repair here:

I had my hernia fixed at the same time I had my sleeve...it is absolutely the time to do it. Just a few extra stitches. Had a very easy very fast recovery. Spent one night in the hospital, have felt terrific:)

i had both the sleeve and a large hiatal hernia repair at the same time on 2/1. i had no problems. i would suggest having them together so you dont have to have surgery twice.

I agree! I am hoping that my diabetes will at minimum improve and at best be resolved. I am currently taking 3 different meds and an injection daily. I also have high cholesterol and fibromyalgia. Asthma as well. I have lost my energy and my mojo lol! I feel that this tool will put me in control of my life. I want to keep up with my 5 little grandchildren and have a longer and healthier life. We can do this!

My first surgeon had the same strict diet. It was her personal preference. She aborted my first sleeve surgery when she found a large hiatal hernia. My second surgeon is allowing me lunch every day with 4 ounces of chicken or fish, vegetables and 2 ounces of carbs in addition to the shakes etc. post surgery diet is Clear Liquids for first week then Protein Shakes then puréed etc.
I’m told it’s the surgeons preference It does shrink the liver After the first 4-5 days on total Liquid Protein plus ice pops I really was fine I got so used to it that I continued after the failed surgery with Protein shakes and one small meal
hope that helps You can do this!

I woke up after surgery and was on some pretty good pain meds and could not even feel much pain but god I was sleepy like I said.
The next day I woke up in some pain not too bad mostly shoulder pain which walking and a heat pack helped to ease. The day after I was discharged from hospital. I was in a little pain mostly just uncomfortable sleeping was hard because I couldn't find the right angle and the pain meds were making me feel hot like red face, chest and scalp. It was so weird so I just took the slow release one and not the endone and I feel so much better. Today I feel great, I'm up drinking Soup, and this amazing smoothie and doing laps of my apartment. Although unfortunately struggling with the Water. But yeah long story short I'm doing great

I’m the one who had sleeve aborted due to large hiatal hernia. Long story short I am now with a new surgeon who sees no problem repairing a hiatal hernia and doing a sleeve. New surgery scheduled for April 12, 2018. Wish me luck!

Best of luck Hopeful. Remember we’re all scared but we’re doing this to take charge of our bodies and our lives. The diet seems tough but by the third or fourth day I wasn’t hungry anymore. I was on a totally liquid diet for 2 weeks. This second time around I get one high Protein low carb meal a day! I hope nothing goes wrong this time and I actually get the sleeve. Don’t know what I’ll do if I wake up not sleeved again! One day at a time! Keep us up to date.

Hi love! What part of CA do you live in?? I live in SoCal/OC. I'm having some of the same symptoms & my doctor aborted my surgery because he said mine was the worse he's ever seen! I HAVE to have this surgery because I have scoliosis and have to have a revision surgery on my neck & back because my entire left side is now in pain....the pain is shooing down my left side of my body & causing my sciatic nerves to hurt me as well...the doctor is afraid if I don't have the surgery, I'll get bigger & bigger & will not be able to walk ... the problem??? NOone will touch me with my condition!!!
    ANY advice?? I'm DESPERATE!!! 😩😩

Welcome Salazar. I flatter myself that I have all the answers since I'm probably the oldest chronologically on Bariatric Pal. I am actually 72, nearly old enough to date Methuselah. Now there has got to be someone in the whole Delmarva that would take your case. Let's take it out a little bit, i know you're in Northern Va, try maybe the Maryland suburbs. I know there's someone in Prince George county on here. If I remember her name I'll let you know. Golly, most,of us worry about insurance. comorbities, here you are money in hand and still having trouble., it does boggle the mind.Hey I noticed on my tablet one of the highlighted surgeons today was Dr Masoud Resvani in W oodbridge Va. Did you try him? Just wondering. I will be having a RnY in early-mid March , date is still labile at this time. All my prerequirements are done just waiting for a date from my surgeon. I will, have,my surgery at Mount Carmel in Columbus Ohio. I'm so grateful, they don't think I'm too old, many programs won't touch anyone over 60. I have low bp, no diabetes,,no cholesterol and a proper motivation. I am in it to win it just like all the younger people.

Well, welcome Dylpowers. Always nice to meet a new friend. What type of surgery are you planning, how far into the process are you and where are you located? And what fears can we allay? I'm still pre-surg myself but not by choice. THAT is a whole nother story. At any rate I've been on Bariatric Pal coming up on 3 months so sorta know my way around. Studied up on the types of surgeries, don't know quite as much about mini bypass or ESG as the others but both of them are represented here. I live in Central Ohio, a candidate for RnY just don't have a firm date, maybe March, maybe April if it's later than that, heads may roll.I'm a trifle impatient, remember Mother
Nature? I'm 72, knew her well and we might have graduated from High School together. World be warned--i am a force to be contended with!
Any hoo if we can make your WLS journey easier, you have only to ask.
