Hop_Scotch reacted to omrhsn in I'm half the man I used to be before WLS and NSVs on recent holiday
Just came back from a short trip to Langkawi Island here in Malaysia with my wife and kids. This is my wife and I second visit after going there in 2013 for our honeymoon (time flies!). We all had a great time there specially my kids. The weather was nice and the island was not very crowded. I got to try a lot of things that I've never dared or was able to do before WLS. The trip was full of NSVs so I wanted to share some of those with you guys.
    1. I didn't need a seat belt extension this time and had plenty of room in my seat! I was able to use the food tray without it pushing against my belly.

    2. I tried parasailing (parachute on a boat), banana boat and even jet skiing for the first time in my life

    3. I joined my wife and kids in playing all the rides and games in the Water theme park. I was always the guy standing out of the pool cheering while my wife and kids were having fun. Not this time. My son was so happy that daddy was with him on the big water slide. Some of the rides had a weight limit of 80 kg (they even have a scale to weigh people who are close to that weight - I was not asked to hop on the scale haha). Climbing the stairs to the ride starting point would have given me a heart attack before WLS let alone sliding down.

    4. We took a speed boat for island hopping which was awesome. In one of the islands we had to climb the stairs up to a beautiful lake (Unlike my first visit I was fine and not out of breath while carrying my bag and my daughter). We rented pedal boats and circled around the lake for 30 mins which was awesome.

    5. We took some photos at the resort that we stayed in during our honeymoon 10 years ago. Left photo was taken in August 2013 and right one three days ago. This was also my first time ever wearing shorts in public and being at ease with it. Guess who bought 4 more shorts haha.

The cherry on the cake was weighing myself after returning home to find that I've lost half of my weight on surgery day. A total of 74.5 kg lost which is my wife and daughter's weight combined!

The reason I answered the way I did was because of the large number of posts from people who are frustrated, disappointed, angry or think they are failing because they compare themselves with others, set unrealistic goals or timelines, think they are losing slowly, don’t reach their goal, etc. I didn’t want you to fall into the comparison trap too.
I had a lower starting weight so had less to lose than you do. Am shorter & likely older. I also had a sleeve. I lost my goal of 31kg (68lbs) at 6 months. (Lost another 11odd kilos over the next 11 months bringing my total to a loss of about 92lbs.) At 8 months I’d lost 37kg (81lbs). So comparing my stats with @ms.sss & @summerseeker you can see how different loss can be over the same time period - a range of more than 2 stone which can be two or three dress sizes as an example. I may have lost more by month 8 if I wasn’t consciously increasing my calories to try to stop my loss. I may have lost less if I had more or longer stalls or lost nothing if my body decided that my goal weight was my new set point & best weight.
PS: My total loss made me an outlier. The average weight loss is about 65% of the weight you’re to lose to put you in a healthier range for both bypass & sleeve. I lost 135%. I had a couple of very short stalls, less than a week in length, so my rate of loss was fairly steady, gradually slowing, with just little hiccups along the way.

Respectfully, and with no malice whatsoever, suggesting a therapist for auxiliary support is NOT bashing, in any way, shape, or form. ❤️ ESPECIALLY in THIS forum.
Alot of us recognize (or eventually come to recognize) that there is alot of head work to do for long term weight loss success. food addictions, emotional eating, self-medicating, self-worth, body dysmorphia, anxiety, depression, anorexia/bulima are just some the the many, many issues our community tend to suffer from en masse.
Yes, there is diet and exercise, your nutritionist and your personal trainer can help you with that (as can the members in this board). As for whats going on in your head, thats what the therapist is for. The folks on here can offer a sympathetic ear and suggest anecdotal solutions, but the real work can be done with a GOOD therapist (unfortunately i also do recognize good ones are hard to find).
anyways, good luck, and just know its not an insult here when someone suggests a therapist...it's actually a sincere effort to help.

You are giving way too much power to absolute strangers to control you and your emotions.
Your new mantra: They are strangers and what strangers say or think about you is of no importance to you, and you will not give them a second thought or even a first one.

No, not really a thing here in Australia, though I am aware of some people being given a card. Pretty sure I wouldn't use it if given one.
I generally choose a smaller meal if they are on the menu. When I order a standard meal I eat what I feel satisfied with and leave the rest. Occasionally I will ask for a container to take the rest home.

May be only 15 cals each but they are not zero calorie. The sugar alcohols can cause tummy upsets and may have a laxative effect if you have too much of them. If you are having surgery on Monday, you don't want to be having tummy upsets or worse which could cause dehydration. You don't want to be dehydrated before surgery.

Without knowing your pre-op weight, its difficult to know if 50lbs is typical or not for 7 weeks post op. If you were on the lighter side pre surgery, 50lbs would be way too much and given your walking you may be lacking in calories (way less than typical for post op), and are losing a lot of lean body mass (muscle). Your body could be struggling to cope??
Perhaps talk to your doctor sooner than later.

It may be your weight loss pattern, and if that is the case, it is what it is.

I am sorry you are going through this, I am no expert, but I think you need to see a bariatric counsellor or the equivalent in your country. I am no expert but you seem to be developing an eating disorder based on disordered thinking.

The staged return to eating is too protect & support your healing tummy. Remember all those sutures & staples holding your tummy together. There’s about 12inches of them - imagine if it was your arm or leg & how you would treat, care & manage that wound. Eating off plan in these weeks can stress, strain or damage your tummy & compromise your recovery.
While a temporary loss of hunger & appetite after surgery is most common, there are some who don’t experience it. You may not be bored or craving a specific food but you turned to chips & chicken instead of a shake or Soup. I think you are craving - salt & textures (something to chew or crunch). You have been through a stressful surgery, your hormones are all messed up, your life has been considerably changed, you have had restrictions placed upon you about what you can eat & do. What may be driving your hunger is a subconscious desire to comfort yourself, look for some normalacy in your life, take back some control, etc.
Worth a conversation with the therapist you saw pre surgery or if you didn't have to see one, ask your team for a referral. Many seek the support of therapy & find it very beneficial as they work through the changes & their relationship with food.
The first weeks aren’t the easiest because of the changes, your recovery & worry about whether what you’re doing & experiencing is right. But it does get easier & in a few months you’ll look back & think it was actually only for a few weeks, it was okay & I managed it.
    All the best.

I think the big issue is it gets stuck as it goes through the band or before the band, expands and causes a blockage. Perhaps talk to the doctor who installed the band (does it need more filling maybe?) about the supplement.

I hope you can find help OP. I think (know!) the surgical restriction helps a lot but we also need to address our underlying issues with food while we have that restriction in order to keep our weight off in the longer term.
If you can connect with a bariatric therapist asap to check what you're doing that you shouldn't be that might be a good first step.
I wish you ALL the luck xxx We're here to help if we can.

I am struggling with over eating after 10 months post op. Lost 90 pounds quick from May to October then stopped. Trick or treat, thanksgiving, Christmas, now Easter causing me to fall off the program and has carried into my daily eating. Anyone else struggling with binge eating?

Thanks for being honest and I agree with summerseeker, you should contact your care team for help! I am still in the preop stage and that is my fear” loose weight quickly and then fall back into my old patterns”. Good luck in your journey ❤️❤️
