What is the new normal for bowl movements
LOL, my old normal post surg = Rosemary's Baby bad deliveries once every 4-5 days. Holy crap! So bad. Since adding lots and lots of psyllium fiber + daily "meds" + lots of veg + water, I get big fluffy, painless, 1lb poops daily. It's my "NEW NORMAL" and I owe it all to my daily plan. I never deviate from it: Miralax 17g in black decaff coffee 2 Colace stool softeners 11g Now Brand whole psyllium husks divided into 2 cups of room temp Cinnamon Apple Spice Tea (decaff) 1/2c Greek yogurt with live cultures 1 GG Brancrisp Fiber Cracker + 1 tbsp almond butter each night before bed 100+oz plain water, plain decaff coffee, plain decaff green tea, plain matcha It is totes worth doing this! The psyllium husks and fiber cracker fluff up the poop and the Greek yogurt with cultures along with the psyllium is helping to repair my gut biome. The water is super duper important otherwise you make concrete.

Six months post-op+ : The Sophomores Thread
I'm parking this here. Saw it on the Facebook and thought, hey don't we all need a reminder about coping techniques at times--the ones that don't involve eating to stuff our feelings back down?

Post Surgery hunger
So chances are you are going through the withdrawal from sugar and carbs at the same time you're recovering from surgery. That INCREASES your hunger cuz your blood sugar and insulin are battling. Drink the LOWEST carb protein shakes that you can. Drink plain water, not sweetened waters. Eat sf jello. Ditch the pudding. Suck on sf popsicles. Try using unflavored protein in broths so it's savory rather than sweet. Check out some protein soup broths from Alex @bariatricpal store.

WOW
Good for you! I couldn't cross mine until I weighed about 160lbs.

I just wanna eat
You're gonna need to get a referral to a therapist who specializes in bariatric food issues. If it were me, I'd dial back the amount of exercise. Walk daily, do some HIIT stuff. Drop ALL bad carbs to the curb for now. Only eat dense, dry protein to whatever quantity your doctor specifies. Get all your water in (no sweet waters). Drink decaff coffee and decaff green tea and matcha. Keep fully hydrated. Drink as much water as you can about 15minutes prior to eating. Then eat slowly as you can for 20 minutes. Then don't drink for 1-2 hours afterward. The only thing I would eat right now until my hunger comes into control is: 1. Lean dense (very) protein=dry grilled chicken breasts, pork chops (lean), turkey burgers, lean ground beef burgers. Lean steak, salmon, hard boiled eggs, hard scrambled eggs, hard fried eggs (no runny yolks, they make the egg a slider protein at that point). (Only grill it or pan sear it or air fry it. NO MEAT LUBES, SAUCES, GRAVIES, or CASSEROLES!!!!) 2. 1 oz of al dente veggies: broccoli, cauliflower, wilted greens and garlic, wilted cabbage, brussels sprouts, broccoli rabe 3. 1/2oz avocado or up to 1 tsp of healthy oil per meal: olive, avocado, grassfed butter, lard, tallow. Use spices but no artificial sweeteners. Nothing sweet! No fruit, no mashed anything, no potatoes, rice, grains, beans, nothing til your hunger is assuaged. Meet your protein needs if you can from solid lean dense protein: 60-80g/day. That's what I do. Of course I can't tell you to do it. I'm not an RD or a doc!!! It takes about 4 solid days of behaving and doing this for your hunger to come into control...then I'd see what I needed to do after that. I would probably just continue on like that...cuz um, lol, that's what I already do!

Where to get help
Also look at OA. We do have a local support group here that is huge and they bring in speakers. Frequently they are speakers about mental/emotional help and dealing with food relationships. Maybe you can try that as well? My doc and RD use a woman in connection with the practice.

Here's a great old thread with lots of practical ideas for low/no cooking meals on those days when you have no time to cook or meal prep!

Chocolate Covered Strawberries
why not a healthy sub? I say "healthy" cuz um, depends who you're asking! Why not get some of the low carb strawberry Greek yogurt (on your plan) and add a squeeze of Sugar Free Hershey's Chocolate Syrup to it? I would get my HEB Plain Greek Yogurt and Walden Farms Strawberry Pancake Syrup and the SF Hershey's and go to town with "dessert"! And say, better living through chemistry as I shoveled it down my piehole.

Sleeved 1/5/19 pain and emotional
Talk to your doc. You NEED a big BM!!! And you need to stay on top of it. Do a search for bm's and constipation. There are at least 2 or 3 threads going right now on the subject. Also, it's very normal to go through HUGE emotions after this surgery. Not only the surgery but the hormonal shift of liberating hormones from fat make it difficult. Drink lots of water, exercise, get sun if you can and take deep breaths. I promise it passes and gets SO MUCH BETTER! ((hugs)) Welcome!

Go back to the basics! See above: 1 cup of food by volume per meal MAXIMUM. Lean dense protein first (2-3oz per meal by weight = about 1/2c to 3/4c of protein by volume)--NO SLIDER SAUCES, MEAT LUBE, CASSEROLES, CHEESY GOOEY, SLIDER MESS. Just use dense plain proteins: grilled chicken, turkey burger patty, fish, shrimp, ground lean beef or turkey, etc. Must be lean and the drier the better. You want FOOD TO STICK! 1-2oz of dense al dente cooked low glycemic veggies or raw veggies per meal = 1/4-1/2c by volume 1-2 tsp equivalents of healthy fat per meal (1tsp olive or avocado oil or grassfed butter or lard or tallow, 1/2 to 1oz of avocado, nuts, seeds, or nutbutters) If still hungry have up to 3 snacks daily no more than 100cals per snack consisting of (1oz protein by weight + 1-2oz of al dente veggies or raw veggies or low glycemic fruit + about 6-8 g of nuts or a tsp of nut butter) Drink 100+ oz of liquids (try to kick the flavored waters to the curb, they wake up cravings) so drink water, decaff black coffee, decaff tea (black, green, white, matcha). Do not drink or eat 15 minute before meal or 1-2 hours post meal. Stay hydrated ALL day! I swear if you can get through 2 weeks of doing this, you will be back on the road to success.

Yeah it takes me 12hours for MOM to work, 4tbsp dosage. Sometimes have to do 2 days in a row. But now I'm using my protocol, things are moving through pretty regularly! Yay. No mo' MOM!

Smooth Sailing for Anyone?
Pretty smooth here! Would do it all again in a heartbeat! Loving my life!

Baby food
Yeah. What they said! I skipped over puree to soft foods per my doc. Lots of poached fish, canned fish/chicken, and soft boiled eggs/soft scrambled eggs, Grk yogurt, cottage cheese, blended soups, mashed cauliflower, etc.

Weight or volume?
^^^ This. ^^^ To our docs, the most important thing is that we stick to our volume targets and don't exceed them. By doing this, we protect how big our pouches become with maturity! It took me SOOO long to "get this"! Cuz i'm very precise about data and logging! And it's hard to consistently log by volume. So my solution is to use 1/2c size measuring cups set on a scale. I use one measure to dice tiny pieces of meat, then weigh them. It's usually about 2 to 2.25 or 2.5oz of meat/fish/shellfish/lean protein per 1/2c volume measure. Then I use the other 1/2c measure to loosely measure my veg. Depending on density and amount of cooking/water, it's usually 1-2oz of veg. So I eat 1 cup per meal at 1 year. And about 4-5oz max by weight--about 2oz of protein per meal + 2 snacks. I get all my protein in that way.

Post Op Question How Much Did You Lose In The Initial 6 Months After Surgery?
I'm back to walking 6-7days per week/1 hour per day. I weighed 222.4 on surgery day (Feb. 20, 2018) At 6 months I'd lost about 58lbs (weighed 164.6lbs) of my 72lbs that I'd set for 1st Goal (1st goal=150lbs). Now at 12 months (coming in 2 weeks), I'm working on my second goal: 140lbs and today I'm 6.8lbs away from reaching it. I doubt I will pull it off in 2 weeks, but I'm pretty close to being able to call 2nd Goal. I reached first goal on 11/02/18.

You know what happens when we cut corners on ourselves. Right? Part of what got us an invite to the Obesity Ball, sweetie! You wouldn't cut corners on your kiddos. So don't do it on yourself, it will have lifelong impact on them if you're not healthy and teaching by example: if something doesn't work fully or as it should, change it until it works again and succeed! What a cool thing to teach them. Persistence and engenuity!
