I couldn't agree more. I to fully intend to keep my surgery private. Just hope my wife can do the same.

I kept my surgery a secret on the strong advice of the psychologist who I was required to see as part of my surgery approval. He mentioned that people can be really negative about WL surgery and how people post-op, those who know will start to police what you put in your mouth. Super annoying. I'm now 3 years out and only a total of 10 people know who aren't medical professionals. I'm a really private person anyway, so this worked with my personality.
One other thing that helped me keep this as a "secret" is that I had previous weight loss successes that were in the 50-60 pound range, then a regain over a year or two (which is what led me to surgery) -- people close to me knew that I had lost larger amounts of weight previously so they didn't think anything of it when I started losing again.
So for me, this was a smart move and I am happy that I made that decision and stuck to it -- secrecy gets awkward sometimes, but my privacy was completely worth it!
Best of luck to you - you're in the very best part of the journey right now!

Sleeveforme2017 reacted to VSG4Mag in Has anyone kept it a secret?
So I've done it!
Had my VSG last Thursday 2/23.
I've struggled with my weight my whole life. Creeping up to 40 I've seen that since putting a significant amount of weight on over the years, I'm not living the life I want. My kids are not getting the best version of me.
But....I don't want to share this with the people close to me. Of course my husband knows and I told my childhood best friend who has shared similar struggles and is interested in this too. But my immediate family, children, close friends and co-workers do NOT KNOW.
Has anyone managed to pull this off?
4 weeks prior to surgery I made a vow to cut back and get myself in shape surgery or not. I gave up sugar and then subsequently all processed carbs just before I was approved. Then shortly thereafter started the pre-op liquid diet and just told people I was using my Protein Shakes as Meal Replacements. So it's no secret that I'm trying to lose weight...I just left out the VSG part.
Truth be told I don't want to explain myself. I don't want people thinking I'm taking the easy way out. I don't or at least I didn't want people trying to talk me out of it...and trust me they would have. I don't want people watching what I eat and asking if I should be eating it, etc. I've seen what people do and say for others who have gone down this road first hand...at work and in my personal life, and I'm just trying to avoid all that.
And of course, I'm afraid of failing. I have the can do attitude. I really see myself being a success and I mean life long. But there is that fear from my past failures.
Any advice or personal experiences from people who have been down this road would be appreciated.

This is funny, when I was about 2 weeks post op I literally Googled for them and they do have them, but they're 10 gm and below, so I just stuck to Protein Powder. Unflavored saved me because I was able to mix it in any food I ate and I would drink 8 oz with crystal light and add the 30 gm of unflavored Protein.< br>

I was warned by a friend who went thru this surgery years ago to watch for your husband trying to sabotage your results. I was two weeks post op on V day. Still on liquids and my husband walked in with my absolute favorite chocolate covered strawberries. I got so upset with him. He say well " I know you can't eat these so I'll eat them" . He did that just to be mean and I'm not falling for that this time.! I lost 100lbs on my own years ago and he did everything he could till I felt bad about it and gained it back. Don't let anyone come between you and your success.

I am having the same problem. I had gastric bypass on Jan 5th, lost 26 pounds in the first 3-4 weeks, and have only lost 2 or 3 pounds since! This stall has been very frustrating, but I keep reminding myself that this is normal and the body needs time to catch up. As long as we do what we can to hit our Vitamin, Protein, Fluid and exercise goals, the only thing we can do is wait!

The three week stall is infamous! It sucks but you'll get through it. There are lots of good reasons why it's happening and none of them have to do with anything you're doing, so keep following your program, trust the process, etc.

This article was immensely helpful to me.

I've been stalled as well. I'm increasing my movement and watching my carbs. I am two months out and haven't lost what I expected but I have to restructure my expectations. I trust what other sleevers have said that the stall wil break!

I will be 3 months post op on 3/6. I'm in my 2nd stall. My first came at about one month snd my second at about two months, which I believe is ending now; as I lost 1lb since yesterday. So don't worry, it won't last forever. It's frustrating, but it's part of the cycle. Good luck.

I have also stalled. I'm 5 wks post op today. Iv only lost 2lbs in the last 2 wks. After losing 24. It is frustrating to say the least. I've done everything correctly. Increased my Protein because my MD said I wasn't getting enough.

Same thing with me. Went to the MD Friday. Iv lost 24 lbs but MD says iv should have lost 6-8 lbs more ( im 4 weeks out) told me to make sure I'm getting in no less than 75 grams of Protein. Iv been having trouble just getting 40-60. Said I could get a leak if I didn't. Well that scared me enough to force myself. Iv increased it and have lost 2 lbs in the last two days.

Sleeveforme2017 I'm at 6 weeks right now, it's just scary to see that I can fall a back into the bad habits of eat mindlessly when I'm bored or not busy enough. I'm able to eat almost anything I want without any problems. But it's good to know my doctor isn't crazy to suggest eating so early.

I had the same problem with my bff. I didn't tell her until the day before surgery that I was having it. Then she started like always " you don't need that blah blah.. just do what I do. Now mind you she weights 360 to my 250 she has major health issues with blood pressure bld clots etc. ( I had no health concerns) finally I said how has your diet been working out for you. I hated to say that but that's what it took. I also told her I didn't need any negativity in my life about my surgery and that's why I didn't want to tell her. I told her I had lost 20 lbs in 3 weeks and she said well I lost 14 in a week once. I said so did you keep it off? Convo
Ended. Sometimes you have to be a little mean so plp will understand. She no longer asks about my progress and that's fine with me.
