    Alex,
Omg seems like you have been to hell and back!! So sorry you have had so many problems.
Why on earth would they leave the open incision? Did they think they were going to have to go back to Operating room??
Have you had complications from this surgery?

I am having RNY revision surgery on July 16th from my sleeve surgery 0ct 25th 2016.I have to have it because my GERD has gotten so much worse than it was before the sleeve surgery.
I didn't know you could have the bypass reversed.
Good luck with your new journey and you don't look like you need help with weight loss anymore.

as far as nutritional deficiencies, they're usually not a problem as long as you keep on top of your Vitamins. There are some people who don't absorb oral Iron well and have to go in for occasional infusions, but that's not all that common. Most of us do fine on oral iron supplements. As for the other vitamins, again, deficiencies are really rare as long as you take your vitamins.

Hair loss - I didn't have any. That can be an issue with any surgery, from what I understand - not just RNY and not just weight loss surgery in general. It's due to the anesthesia, supposedly. I'm guessing you see it more in weight loss surgeries than other types of surgeries because we're taking in so few calories those first few weeks and months, but I've heard of people losing hair from other surgeries - or from giving birth, too. Whatever, not everyone loses their hair, and for the majority who do, you're really the only one who notices it. It's kind of rare for it to come out in huge, noticeable clumps. If you didn't lose hair with your lapband surgery, maybe you'll be OK.
Loose skin - again, you're likely the only one who'll notice. I had mine removed three years after surgery because I didn't like looking at it anymore, but it was easy enough to hide from the world. I had most of it on my abdomen (I was, and still am, apple-shaped). I'd just tuck it in my jeans or "tummy-control" leggings and wore slightly-oversized, long-ish tops to cover any lumps. Here's a picture of me before plastic surgery. I had *a lot* of loose skin on my abdomen. It's not even noticeable in these clothes:

And I hope things continue to go your way, I've lost over 120 since my surgery, my Dream Goal is less than 25 pounds away. Haven't been seen in bariatric clinic, next scheduled is 14th August, but believe it or not but my primary care wants me to slow down, yeah I said "What?" also. Told me he had thought I should be aiming for 70% of excess weight to be lost, well I am at 68.3 and for some reason he's apprehensive? I still want to aim for my 175 pound goal, that was always my intention anyway. I would be happier at that point would be my belief. Well if my blood labs turn out well, no vitamin/mineral deficiencies , then I'm still aiming there. Last ones I was low in Vitamin D and had an Iron INFUSION to bring up my low level there. Vitamin D I rather expected , we were just coming out winter and I hadn't been exposed to much sunlight. And for some unexplainable reason my local hospital doesn't routinely do iron levels when they draw blood. So I have to have it done at another lab, it's still okay but I really want to see it's okay, normally infusions are quarterly for low iron.
But I am still cheering you on, with your mind set you cannot fail, and I'll take pride is saying I've known him all through his healthier path.

I've been going through the motions and I'm 3 months away from my 12 months cut off so getting excited yet anxious.
Will be seeing surgeon finally In 3 weeks to discuss in depth the whole procedure and I guess finalize a surgery date either 30 sep or 14th October. They only do surgery one day a week here at Ashford Adelaide Australia.
I've been told I may have bloods done but after that I need to see a dietitian to discuss the preop diet and then next time I see surgeon will be on the surgery day and I'll have 2 nights maybe 3 in the private hospital which will be NICE..
If all goes well I'm so excited been researching the procedure for like a year now and choose RNY BYPASS over the others mostly because of my diabetes and high sugar levels but because I need to lose 125+lbs to be healthy bmi but also be fit and healthy for the first time in many years.
I'm single and no kids so I can concentrate on myself 100% and hope that I'll be ready to take control of my life with the help of the bypass tool.
I'm be 35 next month and I want to be a brand new man Well before I'm 40!!!
Then look towards the future to meet someone start a family and pass on all my new found knowledge to my children so they can live healthy lives...
Just felt like giving a little update/vent/rant...
    Thanks guys
    Mike

my surgery was about 90 minutes. But of course, if you factor in prep time and recovery, then yes, probably 3-4 hours. But the surgery itself is pretty quick.

I had a revision from sleeve to bypass in March. I do not have any more heartburn—that’s completely resolved. I have had a much harder time eating this time around and still do not have solid stool. As a result, I lost 50 lbs since my revision which is more than I ever planned to be honest. I was successful with the sleeve—losing 110 and only gaining back 10 lbs over 5 years. But the heartburn was too much. The recovery has just been harder. But as a trade off I’m seeing numbers on the scale I never thought I’d see.

    Thank you.
I've been reading through alot of the forums on here and found it really helpful.
I know hospitals work differently here between counties too but they strongly advise against the sleeve if there is a past history of reflux where I'm at. Its interesting how drs and hospitals differ.
Sending well wishes your way, a speedy recovery and good luck with the revision
If you are happy to, let me know how you get on with it all.
You have a good weekend too.

Congrats! I had mine July 1st. So far no regrets and no complications 🤞🏽 I’m walking 30 mins daily on my treadmill and keeping clear fluids down. Next week I can start full liquids. Hope that goes smoothly as well.

You do have to look around more to find a doc who does the DS as it is something of a niche market.
    https://www.dsfacts.com/duodenal-switch-surgeons.phphttps://www.dsfacts.com/duodenal-switch-surgeons.php
has a very incomplete listing, but is a start.
I don't see it as markedly more risky than the bypass; it is a more complex procedure and takes more resources for a surgeon to develop, and most particularly maintain, the necessary skills to perform it. This means that it tends to be the better surgeons who go into it, which tends to even out the risks, though that does mean that one needs to vet their prospective surgeon more carefully as there have been some over the years that got in over their heads. Thankfully, they tend to get weeded out, but it still helps to seek out a surgeon who has done several hundred of whatever procedure you are interested in.
It does get a bit of a bad rep in that there are some practices out there that advertise doing it (it is actually fairly common to see it listed on a surgeon's CV, or on a practice's list of offerings) but if one inquires about it, they sell you what they actually do perform, saying things like 'we used to do it but the patients had too many problems...' which by my experience means that either the guy in the practice who did do them left the practice, or they never got up the learning curve to do them correctly. It isn't something that a surgeon just "picks up" and starts doing, but is something that most go back to school to learn, usually doing a residency of a few months with an established practice to learn all the in's and out's of it. That's a lot of time off for a busy surgeon, so it often just means that it isn't worth it business-wise to go to the trouble to learn it. But many don't want to lose the business, so some will bad mouth it in the process of selling their own offerings. Oddly, when looking at practice's offerings, it is not unusual to see them list the Vertical Banded Gastroplasty (the old "stomach stapling") which has been obsolete for at least twenty years, but it seems that some will list anything they may have done once in the past as a current "offering".
My wife is about fourteen years out on her DS and is still doing well with it, and we still regularly attend a support group that is composed of mainly 10-20 year vets, and it is overall a healthy population. There are things that can crop up over time that is a result of the malabsorption, which is something that it has in common with the bypass. One may not recover from a blood loss event as readily as a normal person, or a VSG patient; Iron infusions may be needed to get things balanced out again rather than just upping oral iron. One will be more sensitive to nutrient deficiencies (with either) which means that it is much more important to stay current on labs; maintaining nutrient balance doesn't seem to be a big issue if one is aware of what one needs; skip the labs for a few years and odd things can happen as the potential deficiencies are different than with the normal population. But overall, with a fairly compliant population, it is hard to tell what issues people are having are related to their DS, and what is simple aging (one of the occasional topics of discussion when someone asks about a particular problem). Most of these people are in their 60's or early 70's now (a few later 50's too...) so things are naturally falling apart a bit - but not nearly to the degree that they would be if they were still 3-400+ lb!

I’m 3 months post gastric bypass and have lost around 52lbs so far. My highest weight when I started this journey was 330lbs, pre surgery weight was 284.7lbs, and my current weight fluctuates between 231-234lbs. My goal weight is 160lbs so I have around 70lbs left before I get there.
