Hi all. I literally just had surgery. Went in 4 1/2 hours ago. I'm up, walking around, doing that spirometer w no coughing. No problems. Knock wood! I imagine the diladid (sp) helps, but still in all...it's NOT a nightmare. I did lose 25 pounds this summer on my own and exercised a fair amount. I'm sure that also helps. Tmr I could be writhing in pain w complications galore, but for now I feel fine. Don't let the horror stories scare you. Make sure your surgeon and program is a Center of Excellence. Mine is. HW 279. SW 245. Goal weight ????? I honestly don't know. Good luck to all of you. If you're contemplating but scared, as NIKE says...just do it is my recommendation.

I know it's tough. I started my pre op liquid diet August 1 and was sleeved on the 22 and through this whole process I have sat at the table with my family during meals including 3 birthdays, my block party, and a dinner party I attended 3 days after getting out of the hospital.
I find its better for me to sit with them and participate in the family time than to be removed from them. It's not as hard as it seems.
I would give it a shot - bring what ever you are eating or drinking to the table and be part of the conversation.
I hope it works for you - it's tough sometimes but I feel like being disconnected might be worse

I guess I should now be over on the POST gb forum, but I wanted to post this here so that people about to get the surgery know what it might be like.
I was sooo nervous and sooo emotional! I had no IDEA how much of a hold, food has over me! Since I use it to cope, I've been crying a lot lately. I really need to get some psychiatric help so that I can find a healthy outlet for my emotions instead of using food.< br />Other than that, my surgery went amazing! I was in there for 3 and a half hours. It was done laparoscopically and it took so long because I have a LOT of scar tissue in that area from previous surgeries.
I woke up in hardly any pain and never really HAD any pain at all, except for the gas. The gas is what hurt the most. So on the second day, I was up and walking the halls, doing about 4 trips around the two nursing stations and other rooms in the center in an hour.
I was released yesterday and love being home! Things are just like they used to be, except I can't pick up and hold my cat, he's too heavy. I can't vacuum and do most of the chores I used to do but I can wash the dishes and keep the kitchen looking nice. Also, I have to be up and walking every hour too! I only walk for about 5 minutes because I'm not used to exercise and it hurts my legs and back really bad. But I will build that up to 10 minutes in no time.
So all in all, it went great! Hardly any pain and no more hunger! Oh, although! When I see some commercials (and I cannot BELIEVE how many commercials there are for food!) it makes me REALLY desire them! Even though I'm not hungry, I STILL want them. And that's what scares me and what I need counseling for.
I'm still on the clear liquid diet for another 4 days and then go to full liquids which I can't wait for! Too much sweet stuff (drinks, popsicles and jello) on the clear liquid diet. lol
So I hope this has helped and was good to read for some of you! Good luck!

Great day all! I was sleeved on 9/6. I'm feeling pretty good. I didn't take any pain meds yesterday. It's becoming easier to swallow.Im taking a chewable Multivitamin twice daily which I think is helping a lot with my energy levels. I am looking forward to eating with my family again. I have my post op appt on Tuesday. I plan to return to work on 9/19. Thanks for this thread!

Hey there! It is a challenge to miss out on time as well as food!
For me, I still eat with family just eat what my acceptable meal is and when possible have my meal be the same/ish. For instance with roasted vegetables and chicken, I will measure my dinner and then family eat theirs with maybe bread or other side that I don't eat.
It makes it easier for me to be sitting at table if meal same, but actually I have done with completely different food. I like being there more than I feel deprived of what or what amount they are eating.
Give it a try when you are ready, you may surprise yourself and feel better about being there!

Everything you're going through is temporary. As soon as you're healed up and progressing stages of food, you will, in fact, be able to sit down and have a meal with them. Just start cooking more bariatric friendly meals that you can also partake in. Concentrate on Protein and veggies, let them have the starch.
Yes, at first we do feel more like freaks than normal people. But you'll be surprised how soon you'll get into the groove and find your new normal. It doesn't take long at all.
Always remember: This too shall pass.

    Amazing results.
See....people look at before & after photos but they can't see the biggest changes......the changes that are occurring in our confidence and happiness. You described this really well.
I am very flattered by your kind words, however, you are the one that is inspiring here. Running marathons and helping others. You have made the most of your experience and are certain to make the most at your new life. Amazing results !!!

You get dialed back in by taking control of things.
Stop grazing. Plan your meals and space them apart at correct intervals that will provide you with energy.
You are in complete control of every bite of food that you take. Nobody is forcing you to eat. You hold yourself accountable and make the right choices with the right types of food in the correct quantity and at the right time.
Tracking every bite through the use of an app like myfitnesspal makes it really easy to see where you are slipping. It's right there in front of you. It breaks down the macros really nicely so you can see where you are failing.
Exercise can be a great way to get there, too.
I promise you that if you get on a treadmill and punch in your weight.....allow it to track calories burned......you'll see and feel how much each calorie really counts. It will make it easy for you to stay on track.
It's all about you regaining control and being in charge of your nutrition.

ChocolateDropp7 reacted to Sajijoma in Today I am officially not "plus sized" what a colossal NSV for me!
I went shopping today because I desperately needed pants that fit. I wasn't sure what would fit so I tried on 16's and they were too big. Then I tried on 14's and they were kinda loose. I thought just for jiggles I'd try on some 12's and they fit! I was so shocked I actually broke down crying in the changing room. I have always been good at keeping my emotions locked down tight, but in there at that moment, I totally lost it and started bawling and LOUD. The changing room attendant knocked on the door and asked if I was ok. It took me awhile, but I managed to get the words out that I was ok and that I had found out I was a smaller size than I thought I was. I'M sure she thought I had lost my ever loving mind, but for me, this is a monumental thing. I had been an overweight kid and an obese adult, my entire life! The size I put on and zipped up, I NEVER had been that size. The closest I had to being that size was a size 11 juniors in 4th grade, so here I am, over 30yrs later and I am finally smaller than I was in 4th grade. It was monumental. I also discovered why it's important to check the price tag before falling in love with a pair of pants because $115 for a pair of pants I probably won't get more than a couple months wear out of was just too much, so I had to put them back. Broke my heart, but I did go on to find other 12's and some 14's that worked and I am officially not plus sized anymore. I can shop in the regular section with all the cute clothes!❤️ From 32/34 and some 36 down to a size 12 in less than a year...all I can say is wow! Thanks RNY for giving me a life I didn't know was attainable!

I initially decided not to tell anyone. Then on the day I was given a surgery date I told my oldest daughter(19). I read that if I ended up in the ER, it's important for them to know I had wls. I felt like she could handle telling the appropriate parties in the event of an emergency. The day after my procedure, I told my closest friend. She was 100% supportive and I wish I had told her sooner. I had an epigastric hernia repair before and had a hiatal hernia repaired along with the VSG. Outside of my daughter and my friend, all anyone else knows is that I had a hiatal hernia repair. My advise would be to feel people out first. I feel like I may have less supportive people in my life than most do so I can't say that my way is right. It's a very personal choice that you will be living with so be careful who you share the details with.

I feel like health decisions are private. I'm sure folks are going to notice, but I feel like saying that I'm on a medically supervised program. I just don't feel like dealing with people who feel they are "entitled " to offer an opinion or advice. I know A LOT OF PEOPLE! I don't think it is everyone's business. Does that make sense?

Happy Labor Day everyone! My procedure is tomorrow morning at 7am. I have to be at the hospital at 5. I am so incredibly nervous! I haven't told anyone that I'm having wls so I don't really have anyone to talk to about it. I guess I'm as ready as I'll ever be. I know I won't be able to sleep so I will be preparing meals for my family for the rest of the week and cleaning the house tonight. I have 5 kids so I'm actually looking forward to being away for a day. I can't wait to see the new me!
