SleeveG reacted to dashofsunshine in 2.5 years post op update - 170 lbs lost, size 24/26 to 4/6
Thanks for the kind words, all!!
As as far as diet advice, during rapid weight loss I followed my surgeons plan to a T. I just kept losing and losing. I got to 10 lbs below goal (my goal weight was 163 lbs) and started adding back in some complex carbs to stop the weight loss. I've been in the 150-153 lbs range ever since.
FWIW, I still can't eat 4 oz in one sitting. I usually max out at around 6 bites of anything. I still eat high Protein, moderate fat, low carb - usually 50 or less carbs per day - and I count total carbs, not net carbs. During rapid weight loss I stuck to less than 15 per day.
I eat around 1,000 calories a day, sometimes a few extra if it's a long run or heavy workout day. I eat mostly protein and veggies, with an occasional serving of quinoa or a slice of sprouted whole grain toast with PB2 in the morning.
I cook every morning, pack lunches for myself and my husband, and also cook dinner every night. I've learned how to use herbs and spices to flavor my food and I really do enjoy cooking delicious and unique meals - we don't do boring, lol.
Oh, and I still only drink Water, one 6 oz cup of coffee every morning, and dry red or white wine.
All of this is my day to day norm, obviously - but if we have a date night, I'll eat a few bites of my husband's Pasta, or we'll share some cheesecake moderation is the spice of life!

So I am just about 7 months out since my surgery. I can honestly and easily say this surgery was the absolute best decision of my life. My highest weight was 433 lbs and my surgery weight I was 396. I am now down to 230 lbs even with a total weight loss of 203 pounds. Anyone having any doubts about this surgery all I can say is do it!! I was terrified but it was the best thing I've ever done

I don't care about wasting food. Not wanting to waste food is part of what got me fat. I hate leftovers. I don't eat them. I cook everything I eat fresh (luxury of working from home). Someone on here that I now have on ignore tried to give me crap about not taking home leftovers from resturants. Like I never did before surgery and I am not going to start now. Sometimes I will take the boxes just because servers seem so upset if you don't eat all your food but I toss them in the dumpster before I even walk in my Apt.
It takes time but you just have to get over it. You wasting food isn't going to feed someone else. They didn't have access to that food anyway, it was yours, and you aren't wasting it, you are just not eating it. Cleaning your plate in America doesn't feed some starving kid, they are still starving. You being obese however shortens your life.
If you are eating in excess of what your body needs you are wasting food and storing it as fat, which is what most of us did pre-op. Food is fuel, so eating more than you need is still a waste.
Just because you are over served you are not obligated to eat it.
Come up with something in your head that makes it okay for you.
For me I am just YOLO. Leftovers are gross I won't touch them.

So far no loose skin issues. I use VannaBelt with the gel. Helps a lot.

Wow, that's great that everyone's had such a good experience with their relationships! Good to know!
I unfortunately did not, and it blew me away! I never would have expected it, but on a subliminal level, my husband (of 18 years) was more comfortable with me not losing the weight because the process of me losing weight woke a lot of insecurities for that had no basis in reality. I also did a LOT of work on myself through 3 years of therapy to deal with the underlying issues that were causing me to eat away my feelings. Through that process I regained a lot of my personal power, and it wasn't something he was able to come to terms with.
It's a very loaded issue in an individual's life and within a marriage. Ultimately, my husband was not able to adapt to the thin, more empowered version of me. As a part of the process, I regained my personal agency and my personal power, which kind of threw off the dynamic of our marriage and he wasn't able to get on the same page with me.

I'm not at all trying to discourage you, it just is something worth being mindful of. In the end, you need to make the decision that you can live with in the end. It sounds to me like you want a life that you are actively living and you have every right to that life. :-)

Hopefully since you're so early on in your relationship you will both grow together.

@@SleeveG You will still gain some strength at first with Stronglifts, but you'll hit a hard plateau where you just won't be able to gain any more, simply because you lack the calorie input to add more muscle. But the routine will help you maintain muscle mass, so I wouldn't worry about busting through any strength barriers when you hit them.
If you end up wanting to switch to more of a bodybuilding-oriented regimen once you've hit goal weight, then you'll start wanting to do isolation lifts with high reps, or a progressive overload style like you'd find in Body For Life, where your goal is to completely exhaust the muscle and encourage growth. But if your foundation comes from strength training, you're going to have even better results with that, most likely. In the end, it'll be a trial and error process to see what works best for you, and what gets you the results you want. But for right now, a program emphasizing overall strength with compound lifts is, in my opinion, the best way to maintain as much muscle as you can, to help with your fat loss goals. It's just too hard to get the calories and Protein necessary to create hypertrophy in your muscles and cause them to grow a bunch, before you're close to goal.

SleeveG reacted to PorkChopExpress in Very good article on Protein Synthesis
Yeah if you want to know anything about maximizing your diet for gains, you go to bodybuilders and strength trainers. Unfortunately there is tons of conflicting information out there, because it's based on a combination of research and broscience. The guys who do intermittent fasting to add muscle while also cutting fat swear by it, and they get all of their day's nutrients in a narrow window of time...like six hours, in some cases. So that kind of conflicts with the notion of a "refractory period" with Protein, because they're getting a full day's worth in six hours and they still add muscle mass. (Thinking specifically of the LeanGains program.) Of course if they're eating over 60g of Protein in a sitting, then I guess that also proves that the "you can only process 30g per meal) is a falsehood.
But I got a long way to go before I can even think about adding any mass. Eating 500 calories a day ain't gonna cut it

Dang, I'm 53. My GF is also 53. We just spent two hours behaving like a couple of teens. I think I owe the people who came up with WLS a dozen roses. If I am following the statistics correctly, this should not be happening at this point in my life, and believe me, two years ago I would not have come close. But losing the weight, and sticking to the program and making positive health changes is not only giving me a new leash on life, if it is life abundant. (Now I grant you, I am deeply in love with my GF and I have great respect for her, however I am still amazed at my physical change down there and really happy with it).

I'm on my third day post op and feeling great. No more pain meds, taking my Vitamins, getting 64+ oz of liquids in and around 50 grams of Protein (need to up it a bit, but I think this is pretty darn good for three days post-op). Haven't weighed myself yet - waiting for the 2 week post-op appt. I started full liquids today (as opposed to clear liquids) and was able to have Decaf coffee with a little bit of nonfat milk this morning and delicious split pea Soup with a dollop of nonfat Greek yogurt for dinner. Life is good. I hope that everyone is doing well!
