waterwoman got a reaction from abailor in One Year Out - Band to RNY
I just had my one year checkup after my conversion from band to Bypass.
I've lost 98 pounds and have a BMI of 22. My surgeon asked me not to lose any more weight.. Words I never expected to hear from a Doctor's mouth.
My story started in 2009 with a lap band. I lost about 60 pounds while throwing up almost daily. Even with repeated fills and unfills, there was no "sweet spot." I either could only have liquids, or experienced no restriction at all. After 3 years, I asked that it be emptied. I ate whatever I wanted and began living on milkshakes and M&M's, My sugar addiction was in full swing. I was drinking 2 liter of Diet Coke daily and felt terrible.
At this point I was 64 and my Dr. gave me a harsh wakeup call, I was 100 pounds overweight and heading for a crash.
I talked to a surgeon who was pessimistic about my success with the band because of my habits. My family shared his doubts. I shared his doubts. I prevailed. My insurance paid for the revision. I had to take the nutrition classes and I spent a lot of time on this website. The time on Bariatric Pal was the most valuable preparation I had going in to the RNY. I learned from the rest of you how awesome and how difficult my life was going to be.
I ate my last big meal and then it was time for surgery.
I had no pain with the lap band insertion or removal and I had none with RNY.
The biggest adjustment was that I no longer wanted to eat.
I followed the rules - got in my protien, Water and supplements.
The weight came off - quickly at first, then slowing.
    I developed new eating habits.
I haven't had sugar or diet soda or alcohol since surgery. I don't crave them.
I've gone to the movies without popcorn.
I've colored my hair, purchased a beautiful wardrobe and look 10 years younger.
I accepted a new position at work.
I'm off all my Rx with the exception of the 2 for depression and cholesterol - both genetic conditions.
I've saved a lot of money.
I didn't exercise. I keep thinking about it, but haven't gotten out of my chair, yet.
Thank you all for the information and encouragement I've received on this amazing journey and for letting me share my story with you.

I plan to give some away and sale some of the nicer things I have. In times past I gave everything away. My weigh has been Up & down for years. That is why I finally took the more drastic step of surgery. Out with the old clothes in with the new me.

I got rid of clothes as soon as they are too big and I still do. As soon as something is too large it is gone. There is no going back.
The only person I know that lost 200 pounds without surgery gave me this advice and some other advice and I have followed it.
I donated almost everything with the exception of my coats which I sold on Ebay because I had some really nice coats.
Keeping your fat clothes is just telling your subconscious it is okay to regain and be fat again because you have a fat clothes safety net.

I am 8 months out and still prefer shakes to bars. However, the bars are easier when I travel. I use Quest and get them delivered from Amazon. My only advice is to do whatever you need to do to take care of yourself.

Even though many people use and are happy with them, my nut advised against because the quality varies so greatly.

Thank you. I didn't beat myself up until I noticed myself wanting more and finding it hard to discipline myself. It just started over the past month and has slowly gotten worse. I feel like I just need to talk about it and fight through it. Talking does make me feel better. I know I've done good thus far. Just mad that I'm here now wanting to eat the bad stuff. I was thinking about setting on the calendar 2 cheat days a month. When I want to eat something...save it for the cheat day. So that way it's just a couple times a month instead of a couple times a week. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G930A using the BariatricPal App

Celebrating my 75 pound loss over the last 7 months and only 25 to go.
The lap band didn't work for me - it was one of the worst decisions of my life.
I had it removed in March and in June I had the Gastric Bypass. It was one of the best decisions of my life.
I can eat anything healthy. Tried a Protein Bar that was a little high in sugar and got sick - so I assume I'm a dumper, which is a good thing.
    I'm in my mid-60's.
My surgeon expected me to lose about 40 pounds - so reality was a pleasant surprise.
Bypass is not for everyone - but it is definitely awesome for me.

    Hi waterwoman,
I am also 60 years old. Good to meet you!! You have done excellent with your weight. I have a story about the Lap Band, my hubby had his for 13years. It malfunctioned (pretty common)he went to have it removed and do a revision to the RNY, that didn't go well. The band had eroded into his liver. So they took out his band and his gallbladder. So he ended up with abscesses and was so sick for 9 months and 3 of the months he doesn't remember. He did finally go to Mexico and had the Sleeve done. This was in June. He is doing ok. I had my RNY 3 and 1/2 years go. I lost 132#'s in 6 months. I did have a few problems with strictures so I think this is why I lost so fast. I gained 8#'s back, but both of my Dr's were ok They said I was losing muscle so it was a good thing. I have maintained my 124#' weight loss for 3 years. I feel the same as you about being one of the very best things I have ever done. I am so Thankful that I am now a normal sized person which I have not been since I was 20 years old. I look forward to following your Journey. Again Welcome.

I really think it depends... some people did not address there underlying issues due to lack of support, insurance issues etc. But some people really screw up despite help and should not get revision unless they are truly ready for change but there are many reasons a revision may be necessary
I kinda feel like some of us are way to critical, judgemental and even self righteous
The government and many plans allow drug a alcohol addicts multiple expensive admissions into rehabilitation without a blink.
People. Who smoke like chimney are allowed transplants,. Chemo etc
Why are we so critical about WLS and eating addictions
Nothing is really one size fits all...
