I have one - it states to let me order half portions or off the kid's menu due to being a bariatric patient. I didn't use it at first (pride I guess), but in the last 6 months I've begun using it quite a bit because I'm tired of the endless stream of leftovers in my kitchen. I haven't been to a restaurant that has given me a hard time about it.

I started taking them today. I know it takes a few weeks for the medication to kick in, so here's to patience.

My BMI is 35.8 and I've decided not to tell many people because of the "not big enough" commentary. I haven't told my mom because I know she's totally against the idea. I'm going to tell her the week before so its "too late" for her to really say anything to get to me. I am also keeping quiet because I know some feel this is the easy way out.
After I left my initial consult I felt disappointment and ashamed of myself because I've done so well in so many other areas of my life but have totally failed in getting a handle on my weight. I can't count how many times I've lost and regained. Last year I ran a half marathon but managed to put on 20 lbs post race. On two meds for my blood pressure and the running + my weight is murdering my joints. So glad I made this decision...just hoping i am approved.

Someone told me that at work yesterday - "You weren't morbidly obese - girl you didn't need surgery!"
Yeah I might not have been morbidly obese, but tell my joints and back that, please. Along with my hypertension. All of which have been alleviated since I had surgery.

food has been an integral part of my life for so long. A lot of my social life revolves around food (and a bit of alcohol to some extent). I am mentally trying to prepare myself to change that aspect of life, and there's a part of me that does not like it. However, I cannot continue down this path I'm on, so I definitely need to change my mindset.
I'm also afraid of not making it through that pre and post op liquid diet when it's time...but I'll have to cross that bridge when I get to it. For now, the food = celebration part is the most important piece that I have to change.

Dr Holden was my surgeon too. I didn't have a hernia repair - but she did an awesome job.

I had to remove mine (the right nipple was pierced) for VSG, and the hole closed. Hopefully I'll get it redone after plastics.

He's adding up ALL that could possibly go wrong to get a big number--a big number to shock you. Which isn't proving his point. I'd throw back some numbers totaling 100% of the risks of staying obese. You can have complications coloring your hair (allergic reaction), eating too much cheese (constipation) and listening to too much Nickelback (headaches and regret).
Ok, so I made the last one up.

If you have no food issues, and you don't obsess about food, then why the need for wls? Many naturally thin people who temporarily gain weight due to physical problems, once they can physically eat normally, the weight just naturally comes off. It doesn't become an issue for them. My grandmother who was naturally thin, became permanently bed ridden, gained a little at first, lost it, never gained any weight again for the rest of her life. You gained seventy pounds. That is a lot of weight to gain, and that's a lot of intake calories. Once you do lose it due to your sleeve, chances are it'll come back two fold if you do eat around your sleeve (or as you said, stretch your sleeve to eat and drink as you want), especially if you couldn't lose the weight naturally in the first place. That's unfortunate but believable. My weight definitely holds me back in my career. I've already started getting better assignments since losing. It's a combination of being perceived differently by others and an increase in my own ability to focus and perform as I get healthier.
It's not fair that people perceive the obese as less capable, less smart, less hard working but it's definitely a thing.

Get ready for the questions. Most people that know you've had surgery won't ask why you're not eating (the ones that do know but ask anyway, just remind them you've had 80% of your stomach removed) - but the ones that don't know will ask why you're not eating, or if that's all you're going to eat - or if they don't ask, they WILL NOTICE. I usually state that "I ate before I came out" to keep the questions at bay, which usually works.

I just follow the basic rules. Protein first, veggies if room, don't drink 15 minutes before eating, wait to drink for 30 minutes after eating. Social gatherings are no problem whatsoever.

First be sure it's what you want. This is not for the faint of heart. It changes your life. It takes time. Learn about food from the dietician. Look at what you can eat. Knowing you can only eat a small amount. I tried to eat small piece of cake. It didn't taste the same. If we could eat and exercise correctly, none of us would need this surgery. My family know. And they cool with it. But I got to be cool with myself. I was sleeved in September. It's been 90 days. It's still a learning experience. But I am 35lbs lighter. Give it a lot of thought....

Fun story about the healing process:
A few months after having mine done, I was getting ready for bed while extremely intoxicated. I hooked the barbell in my wedding ring and tore that sucker 3/4 of the way out. The natural response was hysterical laughter (yep, THAT intoxicated) and going to bed.
Repiercing (a year or so later, once it healed back together) SUCKED. Piercing through scar tissue on an existing piercing was no laughing matter.

@ I had nipple piercings for a long time and I can say it wasn't the case with me or anyone else I knew. I had the straight metal bars because I have very large breasts. My nipples pretty much were about the same as they were pre-piercing. The only thing that was different was the reaction to cold. It's a whole different feeling when you have a piercing. I never had a huge increase in sensitivity other than during the healing phase and defintely no decrease at all, even after removing the piercings.

@@Raymia I've had a nose ring for over 5 years and that sucker likes to close up ASAP if I leave it out too long. Fortunately they just let me tape is down for surgery (I was wearing a stud and not a round ring that day). I'm finding that I'm being asked less often to remove piercings.
I'd like to do nipple piercings again, but dread the healing. I'm not too worried about how my chest is looking post op. I have gone down from an E to a DD and band size has gone down. I'm grateful! LOL. But they aren't sagging anymore than they already did (which wasn't bad).

It recently occurred to me (duh!) that WLS online forums (I participate in this one and one other) are my form of "Obesity Anonymous."
It's clear to me that by considering others' posts and posting here that I'm engaging in positive self-talk, mindfulness and accountability. Since I'm 18 months post-op and coming up on a year of maintenance (which means it's still a very evolving phase for me) I'm interested in sticking close to BP to learn from others who are going through maintenance or are further out than me.
But I don't think that hanging out on WLS forums for two years or longer is a typical behavior of WLS patients at all.
