Did anyone try to practice not drinking with meals prior to surgery? I wondered if that would help.
It actually was easier than I thought. Remember after surgery you are not eating solid foods. You go through steps so by the time I could eat regular food again it wasn't a big deal. I thought that it was going to be a struggle but after liquids, than mashed, than soft I didn't even think about it anymore.
How soon prior to eating have you been told you will need to stop drinking? It seems like it is one of those things that vary by doctor.
I was told to stop drinking one hour before and wait one hour after. I am more strict with after.

My after care advice from the nutritionist was no straws. I ended up in the hospital with dehydration and told my surgeon that I can only get enough Water in when I use a straw. His advice was do what keeps you alive and I have been using straws ever since.

I use a straw. I actually get less air when I use a straw. I drink 3x the fluids with a straw. Without a straw I struggled to do 20oz a day. I'm sure both ways are acceptable.

For those that are 2+ years out and experienced regain have you ever heard of bariactriceating.com? They have a 48 hour reset followed by Back on Track diet (I hate to use the D word). I found them while looking for support because although I have not had any regain I was on the fast track. They have a group on Facebook and everyone there is saying the eating plan (free) has helped them lose a significant amount of regain.

wish I had the BALLS to say that!! when people ask me how I lost the weight I'm honest about it b/c enough people at my job know the truth so I don't want to deal with lying to them...they are always so disappointed when i tell them i had the surgery! its like i just told them that Santa was fake!! LOL. the way i look at it, if there was a "magic pill", OPRAH would have found it already! and if she is still curvy then it hasn't been discovered yet so surgery was what was best for me....so SUCK THOSE BALLS! ;o)

I agree with enjoythetime... now at 80#+ down, people in my community are definitely noticing and asking, I also reply "I had WLS, a gastric by-pass" and most know what that is and are supportive. Actually, I am proud that I have the gumption to go through a year of prep, fight the insurance monster, and go through the surgery to this 3 mos post time.... I also know that some people who have never experienced being really fat don't have any real perspective on this change, so I don't blame them for thinking "You should have just lost weight!" I swim 3x a week, have for years, and some of the other obese people have been asking me what happened, and more than one are now considering WLS.

    ohiodoc,
    Welcome to the forums!
This is a great question, and definitely something that you and all of us need to address at some point. I think you got some very good advice from the members who have posted. I agree to let it come up naturally – you don’t have to decide one way or the other and stick with it all the time. You can choose to tell people up front, or you can tell them if they ask how you lost the weight, or you could decide not to tell them.
Personally, I tell people. I am proud of my lap-band, and I want people to know weight loss surgery could be an option for them or someone they know. I also want people who aren’t WLS candidates to know that it can work.
Whatever you decide, remember that it is entirely your decision, and your decision is the right one.

I'm 14 months out and except for a handful of time when it felt like food was stuck in my throat (usually chicken breast) I am able to eat and wait the hour my program suggests with no problem. I found it much easier then I thought it would be going in because I was a take a bite take a glup type of girl.

This is a big fear of mine as well. Actually, this is the one thing my husband says he thinks I will struggle with the most. I gave up diet coke about a week ago (so very hard as I LOVED my diet cokes). Maybe it's all in my head but I don't feels the same kind of thirsty now that I am drinking tea or Water.
I plan to switch to Water only after the aspartame/diet coke withdrawal is over. I was afraid to give up caffeine at the same time. I didn't want to set myself up for failure.

Kissifur got a reaction from _Kate_ in Surprised at my reaction to weight loss questions.
Weight loss is hard and it is natural to want to know how people did it, I sure did when I was heavy. Now that I'm the one in the hot seat I say that I had the surgery and have changed so many peoples perception of the surgery with a few now contemplating it for themselves. I will agree that I am tired of hearing "how much have you lose?" Among other questions but I know that it comes from the novelty and myths surrounding WLS.
