Beaumont Doctors & Staff were amazing! I highly recommend Dr. Krause! It took approximately a month from the initial visit with the surgeon. Once all the paper work & tests were completed it was roughly a month! I wanted to loose as much weight prior to surgery. 4 months post op & I'm down 31 lbs.

I'm having my sleeve on June 3. I'm a terrible procrastinator which means I am totally unprepared! I was wondering if anyone could help me out with things I need to have at home when I'm released from the hospital? What were your preferences?!?
    Protein Shakes?
    Vitamins?
    Foods?
    liquids?
    Medications?
    Other misc?
Help me! I feel so unprepared!!!

Rena, I started pre op weight at 302 and have lost 55 pounds. I got cortisone shots in my knees three times a year and lived on NSAIDs. At 247, I went to Italy with nothing but Tylenol. I walked my butt off on hills and stairs and cobblestones every day for two weeks. Miles and miles every day, several cities. Although my knees hurt by the end of the day, they recovered daily. My feet hurt like hell but also recovered every day. Amazingly, I was not out of breath, and I kept up with our tour guides easily. Just that small amount of weight lost changed my physical abilities. I look forward to how much more I'll be able to do when all the excess weight is gone.

    Hello.
I am now inching my way toward the sleeve surgery (which is not set yet, but expected to be in July). I just had my cardiac appt. to get the official clearance, which i knew would not be an issues as my ekg's and stress test history is normal.... I have my pulmonology clearance coming up in June... then my final pre-op class 6/27/14.

I am still excited, but starting to get a bit nervous too... I have been having a bit of gastritis going on, (as a lot of times it gets triggered with stresses etc) and well that is one fear that is gnawing at me. I try to not read up on too much before the surgery, but one thing that has me scared is I have heard a lot of extreme postings on how dry heaving or vomiting episodes can be a major problem to the surgery site.... some have even strongly warned that it can rip or pop the staple site... has anyone heard this? that truly scares me, especially due to the fact that there are episodes that with my gastritis, it has caused me to get queesy enough to dry heave, etc.... I don't want to be in fear of it causing a rip after surgery... I am trying so hard not to over analyze but I also want to be prepared....

I am guessing fears are normal, especially when you get closer to the surgery date... but I feel a bit like a basket case...lol.
There are so many thoughts going through my mind, I want to be realistic in my thoughts and expectations without being in total fear....does that make any sense??...lol... I have been counting down to this surgery (and still am counting down) but I am also feeling really scared.

Any helpful insights would be appreciated......

    Sincerely, Angi

Hello. I get my VSG in 5 days. Are there any other Vitamins I should be avoiding (aside from the multi) right before my surgery? I guess the Vitamin E in the multi can cause too much bleeding or something.

it is good that she is concerned about you. as others have said, we nurses (and CNAs) tend to be very careful about our own health decisions.
be proud that you raised a daughter who is only looking out for your best interest. maybe take her to lunch and discuss it with her or take her to an appt with your surgeon and allow her to ask questions! knowledge is always the best power and will likely ease her concerns.
    good luck!

Yes that is true--she does see only the troubled cases, and not the successful cases that out weigh the bad ones. Thank you for that point. I appreciate it!
I'm a RN too and getting my sleeve was one of the best decisions I have made in a long time.

Your daughter works as a CNA at a hospital? I guess I can see where that would cloud ones perspective on bariatric surgeries. People go to the hospital because they're sick and have problems.. she doesn't see the majority of people who DON'T have issues and are successful with it. She only sees the bad cases, which I'd be willing to bet are only a small percentage of the good ones.
If you've done your research, you know that WLS isn't a quick fix. It still requires work and commitment on your part. As with anything, there are potential complications.. but you can look at statistics and make an informed decision as to whether or not surgery is worth the risk to you. I know for me, at least, it definitely was. Like I said.. best decision I've made in a while.

My daughter, who is a CNS , was against my gastric sleeve surgery as well. She was worried about malabsorption of nutrients .. I too her that the gastric sleeve is not the same as having the by pass surgery in relation to malabsorption. Now that I am 5 1/2 months out she sees the change in my energy, my attitude etc. I had to do for myself.

I am a nurse and tried talking myself out of it numerous times, but my blood pressure cholestrol and now pre diabetes I must do it so I can live a longer healthily life. Surgery is not a cure but a way to help maintain your weight loss. Everything had risks including staying overweight. I too have lost weight many times. Just couldn't keep it off!

I was finally approved May 27th!!! I was and am very excited. Yet still a little apprehensive because my 24 year old daughter who is a CNA is against me getting the sleeve! She says she helps patients that have bariatric surgery and its not good. She is trying to be supportive and offered to help me diet another way, But Ive done all the diets out there numerous times. Everyone else is supportive of my decision, but I guess Im dwelling on her feelings about it because she does work as a CNA in a hospital. Ive done so much research and reading about the sleeve and feel I am well informed and not going into this blindly. Just curious about others thoughts on this subject and their family members feelings towards you getting bariatric surgery? But she is scareing me a bit!
