still investigating
Rhonda, keep on investingating..here and other places. Obestiyhelp.com is a good website also, with information on surgeons, in each state, plus other info. I had consults with (2) surgeons before choosing one. Find one that you want to see. If you end up with one you don't feel comfortable with, then you don't want to see him/her as much and aftercare suffers. I am considering my banding a success (see below). I am still losing, albeit slowly. I am happy that I did it. Shawn

thinking about doing it, questions...
Jen, keep researching and asking questions! Obesityhelp.com is good website also. They have a list of surgeons according to states. In my opinion, with the lapband, you need a surgeon that you WANT to see every few months. There is more maintanance than the other WLS, due to fills/unfills. Especially during the first year. Get a good surgeon, within driving distance, if you can. Sometimes patients from Mexico have problems finding local doctors to get aftercare, due to liability (they didn't put the band in). Good luck. Shawn

feeling week and almost passed out-HELP
To me, you nutrition looks pretty good. However, how hard are you working out? It may be that you need additional Protein or calories. Try logging in on fitday.com to count calories for awhile. It also has a spot to log in your acitivies and calories burned. You are doing wonderful...Shawn

Outcome of what happened with surgeon today.
Jo Ann, you are in my thoughts and prayers... You shouldn't have to live being uncomfortable or in pain, if you don't have to. Spend some time, as Sue said and evaluate your options. If you decide on another WLS, it might be the time to do it while your having your band removed. Best wishes. Shawn

Update on my back...
Carrie, I am wondering what the official name of these injections are called. Are they called "anti-inflammatory injections" or are the called something else. My Mother has horrible back pain, with herniated disks, and degernative arthritis. I am wondering if this is something that might be helpful beside the oral pain meds. If so, what type of doctor does these injections? Thanks, Shawn

Switching Surgeons in Houston
It's normal to feel a restriction, at first. Mostly, it is due to swelling. Once the swelling is down, you'll be able to eat more. But don't fret, once you have your fill again (it might take a couple), you'll feel that restriciton again. Dr. Spivak has a great reputation. Good luck! Shawn

Near Beaumont....Need HELP for a friend

How many calories are you eating?
I've done pretty well on about 1100-1200 calories per day. Although, I am feeling the need for a fill!!! Shawn

Painful Fill???
I've had 3 uneventful fills/unfills. My surgeon gives me a bit of Lidocaine (small needle) to numb the area and I don't feel a thing... Shawn

What did you eat today?
Breakfast-Smart Protein bar Lunch-chicken salad (w/spinach greens) 1 cup each Snack-Reese's Peanut Butter cups Drink-Hot chocolate w/marshmallows Dinner-4 nachos (chicken, pinto Beans, and cheese) About 1100 calories

Morality VS Self Preservation (Neighbor issues)
I like the way Delarla handled her neighbors (very funny)!!!! Jenna has it right regarding the laws. Most of these folks, like to intimidate. However, stand up for your right and don't be bullied. Be cautious. Most likely they will be gone in a short while. Folks that live in chaos, often move around..in my opinion. Shawn

Quick questions
It took me 3 months post-op before I didn't have occasional pain. Stop, if it's painful, and take it easy. You'll be fully recovered in awhile. Shawn

&**&^ No More Fills For Me
Michelle, isn't it nice to get a simple explanation! It's frustrating sometimes and knowing the reasons does help. Like the others have said, be patient your restriction will come. Sometimes restriction sneaks up on you and BAMM you're tight. I have moments where I can eat the same food 2 days in a row. Day 1=I can eat a small portion. Day 2=I can eat a large portion. Why? I really don't know. Good luck, Shawn

Weight Issues in Americans vs other countries
I've read and watched, on tv, lately about the obesity epidemic being worldwide. Unfortunately, in this case, the US has far reaching influence!!! Sunta's right about the serving size, lack of snacking, etc....They sound like bansters without the band...

Puberty?
I have an 11 year old and 17 year old. Am I tired!!! O.K. Do what is best for your family.....let your gut lead you. In my opinion, honest and open is the best policy. There is no avoiding sex topics nowadays. The children get their sex education, one way or another (via media, peers, etc). Keep it age appropriate and light. Let her ask questions and leave the topic open for future discussions. Good luck. Shawn

Where's our 6 month anniversary people at??
In a few days, I'll be at 6 months! I can't believe how time flies. Every day I still feel as if I am "learning" my band. It's an amazing road that I am willing to travel. I can't believe I am below 200 now. Shawn

Hair Falling Out
I am shedding like a dog! Although, it has slowed down since it started 2 months ago. I log my protein on fitday.com and TRY to get at least 60 grams, plus I take the Biotin. On my surgeons message board, someone asked when her hair would stop falling out. He said usually about 8 months or so from your surgery date! Shawn

Very emotional about decision to get banded
I felt EXACTLY the same way....After months of research and Lapbandtalk, I finally had reached (2) conclusions via these questions: 1) I am almost 40 (then), do I want to live my life as I am now or very possibly heavier? (N0) 2) How many 100 year olds, have you seen, that are obese? (NONE) Shawn

Please Help! Son With Behavior Issues;
Whew! You have some wonderful advice from the other posters, especially Mandy. Here's my info and advice: I have a 17 year old ADHD son, diagnosed at age 6 (bright, caring, average IQ, gifted in other areas). But we knew before... Throughout the years, we've done diet changes, supplements, biofeedback, counseling, non-stimulant meds, stimulant meds, behavioral modifications, 504 modifications, and on. I have a BA degree in El. Ed, and MS degree in Counseling. I was led into college and careers because of my search to help my dear son. I never wanted to regret not trying everything. This is what I've learned: I am an expert on my son. All children are truly different and you will know in your gut, if something is working or not. Kids will be labeled one way or another (the hyper kid, the goofy one, etc). I was also afraid of the ADHD label, but I am no longer. Try what you feel is right and positive for your child. If medications work well and allow him to be the person he is proud of, then go for it. Communicate with the teachers at school and work hand-in-hand. Be consistent and clear with punishment. Reward good behavior. I have much more to share. However, I don't want to overwhelm. If you have specific questions PM, and I'll be happy to share more. Opinions of a Mom....Shawn

In need of the cheapest safest lap band
Dannygirl welcome! Tell us what area you are living. That way maybe a surgeon might be closer to you. Lapbanding takes some maintenance with fills/unfills. It makes it more convenient, if problems should arise, to find someone within driving distance. Shawn

I am NOT the Energizer Bunny!
Hello ALL! I went to my family doctor today. Of course, blood work will be involved. I'm going to have my blood drawn tomorrow morning. Of course, I'm being tested for low iron, and a slew of other things. I am looking forward to the results....Shawn

Need some advice...Colonics
I've seen a colonocopy done on TV. Really the colon doesn't look "dirty." I know folks have enema before the procedure. However, how is a colonic different than an enema? Shawn
