5 oz plain Fage Greek yogurt with macerated strawberries in balsamic and swerve fake sugar with almond slivers. I will snack on this all afternoon till I finish.

Got it. Oh I know there aren’t many carbs in the almond milk, it’s just the ratio.... if I do a smoothie it has to be more than half protein otherwise I just can’t justify it for myself, the carbs exceeding the protein makes me hungrier! I could put a scoop of Protein Powder in or do dairy milk and then it would work for me.

I still have trouble getting protein in from just food some days. But drinks in general I can’t do unless they are more protein based.

I only seem to notice the regain post from the people that never took the surgery seriously and continued to eat whatever they wanted. The pizza, tacos or nachos, rice and Pasta, booze, goddamned marshmallow peeps... "it's all ok because now I have a smaller stomach and can't get fat!" And then the honeymoon is over and they learned nothing. Then they blame everything else in the world, life got in the way you know?
You can't save everyone and you can't help everyone either. Let them fail on their own and focus on the ones that really putting the effort in.

Plenty of us who eat that way aren’t retainers either though. It’s not a road that’s doomed to fail.

I think as we study and learn more we will be able to tell by your genes who will do well on what diet. But we are still in the dark ages.

There isn’t any one size fits all. I did the high carb low fat diets in the 90’s and those always ended in me falling off the wagon and regaining. I was quite strict on the low carb train till I got to goal. I’m still pretty low carb but I don’t stress about them a bit here and there.

I’m five year out and it works just great for me.

I know your plan is working for you (so far). Can’t we just all realize that there is no one size fits all answer? I know you’re certain your plan will be the answer for you. And time will tell, but since I think a big part of this is mental, I think it will.

But you make it sound like being a “carb nazi” means you’re doomed to fail.

I didn’t.  It’s not a stop gap measure for me.  It’s a lifestyle change and it works just fine.

We went out to Breakfast for my mother in law’s birthday this am. I did what I often do at restaurants and just got an extra plate and people shared with me. Half a scrambled egg... quarter of a slice whole wheat toast, a bite of hash browns and smoked tri tip (the piece was maybe 2-3oz... this place has incredible smoked tri tip). You can see I are maybe a third of the carb servings and 2/3 of the Protein.< br />
This time my 15 year old didn’t finish it though because he had a HUGE breakfast burrito that he couldn’t even finish.

It’s interesting to think about! As a whole are we more successful because we seek out more information, are more committed and more knowledgeable? Are we less successful because as a whole because we spend more time on our computers and smart phones than getting exercise? Are people who post more or less successful than people who lurk and just read (because most internet boards are more lurkers than posters). More successful because we have a “support group?” Less successful because it’s online and because it doesn’t have the safeties in place an in person one has (I mean let’s be real, people don’t “say” these kinds of things in person).

I’m just pulling random possibilities out of the air because who knows.

    1. Indulge on occasion, sure. But even now 5 years out I can’t eat all that, no, not even 1/3-1/2. And the bread would upset my stomach. Can you share with your mom?

    2. Some can some can’t. At 5 years out carbonation still hurts my stomach.

    3. I can do a mixed drink or wine. But half of one gets me really tipsy.

    4. When I open that door it’s hard to close it. I gained almost 20lbs after Christmas at two years out just because I started occasional treats and it was hard to stop and keep them “occasional” since then I am a LOT more careful.

    5. Drink them but don’t add any sugar to them. Keep them sugar free. That matcha powder and simple Syrup adds up FAST and stimulates your appetite.

    6. N/A

    7. You will get used to it why would you try to after you’re used to it?

I am a member of a few WLS support pages on Facebook, it saddened and frustrated me the other day to see someone three weeks post op asking if it would be too soon to eat ice cream? I was one of the first to post saying its would be best to discuss with their surgeon/nutritionist before consuming ice cream. The post and comments disappeared between my log ins so I can only assume that a comment war ensued and the post was deleted by the moderators. Yesterday the poster posted again, prefacing the post 'no food police'...saying how they had ice cream and had enjoyed it without any issues. Person says they didn't much icecream. I blocked that person so I didn't see any further posts of theirs.
Why did I block the person? I couldn't bear to see the self-sabotage, the slippery slope of eating what is presumably an additive food for that person. I was saddened and frustrated that someone who would undertake surgery (along with the risks and complications that may arise) that costs thousands of dollars would risk a successful outcome so early in the game, that they would risk their health. I was frustrated that either their surgeon/nutritionist hadn't educated them properly or the person had purposely ignored or defied those who they had trusted their body with.
This person could be me in the future, but I sincerly hope that should I find myself on a slippery slope that someone would attempt to offer a helping hand before I hit the hard downward slide.
I am slowing learning that not everyone wants to be helped and we can try, but at some point we need to let them go so as they hit rock bottom, for them to find the what they need within themselves to stop the self sabotage and make positive moves to better outcomes.

Note by the way, I realise that at some point, that people will eventually reach a point when treats and other foods are part of a balanced diet and lifestyle, my point above is not about that or ice cream in particularly, but about potentially self sabotaging a successful result or putting health at risk, and possibly not giving a shite about it...that and the fact that not everyone can be or wants to be helped.

You might be surprised to find a lift is all you need... they excise extra skin in a keyhole shape and that will reduce your cup size quite a bit all by itself. I had a lift with implants and would up the exact same bra size bc the implants made up for the removed skin (that I’d been “rolling up” and tucking into my bra!

    I can finally participate!!!!

I made some low-fat ricotta bites and they are ahhhmazing!

Also- I made so many, because I’m bringing some to my surgery buddy to try!

Protein Mug Cake. One scoop Protein Powder (works best with one that has egg protein or caesin as part of it not just whey isolate), 1tsp milk and 1/4 tsp baking powder in the microwave for 1 min. Ate it in about 20 mins.

Thank you! Well... just doing what I know works. For me that’s avoiding simple/refined carbs, learning the difference between eating because I’m hungry and eating because I’m angry/hurt/frustrated, and staying active. I run 20+ miles a week and do a lot of yoga. I’m lucky in that my restriction is still great and I never really got the hungries back like I did before once I got my acid under control post op.

I still have trouble gauging how much to serve myself even at five years out. Especially when I am eating things I don’t often eat (in this case quinoa and corn). They filled me up more quickly.

This is ancient grains and sautéed onions (about half and half) with leftover tri tip that I braised in red wine and wosterchire on top and then topped with a little bit of corn and green onions and cilantro. My fifteen year old ate what I didn’t. I added some power greens slaw on the side optimistically but didn’t eat any so cropped them out of the pic.

I will eat the slaw tomorrow for lunch.

Is there a reason you don’t use regular milk? That smoothie wouldn’t work for my plan bc of the carb to Protein ratio since almond milk is skimpy on protein. Regular milk would make it work for me. Just curious.

I started couch to 5K at four weeks post op. Why wait? You are going to have the loose skin you have regardless of whether it bounces now or not. If it bothers you try compression wear!

10000000% worth it. Five years out from the sleeve. Maintaining well. I had a relatively easy recovery. There are some things I still can’t eat as they don’t sit well, but they are mostly things I don’t need to be eating anyway like rice, bread and carbonation.

Do realize that most people don’t get “thin.” Most people lose about 60-75% of their excess weight. So if your ideal weight is 135-165 and you weigh 265 you have 100lbs of excess weight. If you lose 60% of that that’s 60lbs so the odds are you would end up weighing 205.

You can definitely work and lose more, but statistically that’s what happens.
