Celebrate every pound you lose. Pre-op, post-op, liquid diet, or voodoo - it doesn't matter. Celebrate every pound and congratulate yourself for doing a great job! You've made a life changing decision and you're gonna love the new you!!

I guess i wanted to post this because people need to advocate for themselves and sometimes you dont have an CRNA or Anesthesia doc that is willing to help you out so here it goes. . .
Allot of patients wake up post op with nausea. This is a common side effect to the anesthesia and can be rather uncomfortable. A wonderfull drug, IMHO should be over the counter in fact is called Zofran or Ondansetron. This medication works by stopping the feeling of nausea. I wont go into the pharmacological end of it. Surfice it to say that for most people, as long as you take it before the vomitting begins, it's a god send. Zofran comes in ODT (Oral disolving Tablets) and pills as well as injection and this october a film (like the new med film strips that melt on your tongue your seeing so popular.) 4mg or 8mg is the dosing, the ODT are a little chaulky after they disolve and you need to make sure you have a moist mouth but they are great. The best part about it is that it does not have the GIANT list of side effects that comes with the old friend Phenergan (Promethazine).
If before you go into surgery your feeling anxious, you need to tell someone. They can give you medications to help you relax. Its normal to have anxiety and some very real fear before surgery. Your nurse or anesthesia doc can help you with this. Don't man up thru it, use the pharmacology to your advantage!
This brings me to post op pain and the management of it. Pain meds come in several forms. I would say the most common are morphine, dilaudid, Fentanyl and then you get into the percocet and vicodin meds. My point in listing this is simple. If a med is not working for you, or is making you sick, ask for a different pain med. These all work a little differently most work on the GABA or MU receptors but each has its own little quirks. Morphine for instance is natorious for giving you an itchy nose. This is due to the histamine release and is common. Nausea with all of these can occur. there is some merit in relaxation techniques and distraction/diversion therapy. This is fairly simply and can help with minor pain or even some break thru pain that can occur post op.
Talk to your dr about any concerns you have with pain or pain management or the treatment you are going to recieve. Dont be afraid to ask whats this med for? why are you giving me this? You dont have to be in the medical field to be told what a med is for, but you should know EVERY med your on. If i ask you what is in your PCA (pain pump) you should be able to tell me. Remember that a little pain is ok, your body will throw endorphines (sp) at you and help with it, but any more than that can hinder the healing process.
Be informed peeps. Dont go in not knowing what you need for yourself!!!
I dont know it all, in fact i would say i know very little and all of this info you can find online. I'm not trying to make myself sound smart, i'm just trying to help some of you shy ones realize that this is your body and you deserve to know whats going in it, and why. Always consult your dr. before taking any medication.

I've tried the patch two times with no luck. I'm now taking Chantix, and tomorrow marks 1 week
Of no smoking. It's do-able, but def hardest first three days. I figure it has to be done if I want this surgery! Good luck.

It's been extremely hot! I had to stop wearing baby powder under my stomach and my breasts because I still sweat so much and the powder doesn't help. By the time I usually make it home, I have Johnson & Johnson brand powder bricks falling to the floor when I take my clothes off! That's one thing I won't miss!

Being able to wear animal print clothing and not worrying about people thinking I'm smuggling an exotic animal.
Not having to try and tuck my fat into the top of my pants
Wearing low rise shorts/pants with out the top half of my bum hanging out the top.

You are not alone by far I've been a quick witted fat girl most of my life I was 220 in 8th grade. Funniest fat chick around a pretty face to boot. I ballooned up to 338 and had enough. Luckily I got fat enough that my insurance covered it with no problems. I started my liquid diet 2weeks early and lost 30 pounds on my own. I had my surgery 6/11 and gained 21 of it back. Thanks to this forum I expected that. I know how scary and exciting this road is and even tho our loved ones try to understand they never will. This is the best wls forum around. Good luck to ya chica!

OK....I'm in shock! Finally after a slow start I hit a total weight loss (since surgery) of 50 pounds in three months! For a grand total of 75 pounds including pre-op diet! Its a miracle! I wish I had done this years ago! God, I just want to cry when I think of all the years I tried so hard to just get off 30 lbs!! Today was special because I found out I no longer have to shop in the plus size!!!! I think I was in grade school the last time I bought a shirt in a "normal" woman's department! Wow! What an amazing surgery!!!! ( in shock)

So I'm 2 1/2 weeks out (6/11) and my husband asked if we can have sex yet. I'm from the old school and believe in keeping my man satisfied. So we tried it missionary and I was fine but he was being too gentle and kept asking are you OK? Does it hurt? I was like that's the problem it doesn't hurt come on already I'm fine. And just when it was getting good my four year old wakes up and walks in my room! She stared for a min then runs out screaming and crying "daddy's hurting mommy he's gonna kill her surgery " needless to say we didn't finish! I'm happy to know I'm getting better tho a few days ago I couldn't fathom the thought of laying flat let alone having sex. Sorry if this was tmi but I had to share with someone and who better than my rny family

This surgery is not the easy way out. In most ways its harder than dieting. One day food tastes good the next (same food) not so much. It irritates me when people say that and judge. Walk in my shoes with my health problems and maybe you can judge me. Sorry just venting, just had this conversation yesterday....

Has anyone had issues with Protein? I have narrowed down my bowel issues to protein. I believe it is whey protein that is making my intestines hurt. I have had horrible diahrea since increasing my protein to the recommend amount. It is making my days seem very long and frustrating.
