Teachamy got a reaction from Mammecan in Fruit Smoothies allowed during Pre-Op?
Blended and peeled fruit removes the Fiber and strips the nutrients from the mashed fruit. All that is essentiailly left is sugar. Fruti smoothies are marketed as healthy, but are filled with carbs and calories.

My social worker at the bariatric center mentioned that because food addiction provides us something, many people switch to other addictions to provided the same comfort. She mentioned, smoking, drinking, pornography and shopping! I thought she was wrong until the mention of shopping rang a bell for me. I can't wait to buy new, cute clothes! So I have to make sure a new and harmful addiction doesn't spring up to replace the old one!

Teachamy got a reaction from Mammecan in Why the pre-op diet?
The pre-op diet for my program is not solely liquid. It is 3 Protein Shakes per day, 2 small meals, 1 fruit, and 1 yogurt. My surgeon is less concerned about the pre-op diet for me, apparently because my BMI is relatively low. (In the obese realm of low.)

WHOO HOO!! I am proud of myself I think for the first time in my life I turned down a donut! At work people usually bring in donuts once a week and today we had them and I did get up and go with 2 others to get one but I looked at them and told myself no...I have a Protein Bar. So now I am sitting here eating my Protein bar and not a donut...YAH ME!

I was first scheduled for surgery July 31. I was geared up, I was positive, I was CRUISING through my pre-op diet life. Life was good. Then BAM! KAPOW! SMACK! A roadblock. My heart decided to beat in Afib, and until it was zapped back into regular sinus rhythm, no VSG for me. That really broke me for the entire month of August. Reverted back to my coffee drinking, my emotional eating...But as the school year loomed, I managed to get back in the game. The surgeon had a cancellation, and I see her (again) Monday! I am scheduled for a 7:00 AM surgery on December 18th. Shazam! Ahh...it feels so good!

I am pre-surgery, but am a mindful food addict. As a type I diabetic, I have had to be mindful of carbs, because the amount of insulin I need to bolus is based on them. That doesn't mean I avoid them though. I eat a lot, so I take a lot of insulin, insulin makes you hungry, so I eat more, then need more insulin, which makes you fat. it's a vicious cycle. I know the sleeve will help me avoid carbs, lower my insulin levels, and hopefully decrease the Type II-esque insulin resistance I have developed. Because I am on the border-line ( I need a 35 BMI to qualify for insurance) I have yet to really alter my eating habits. I've been tracking calories on My Fitness Pal, and I range from 1400-2400. Pretty scary fluctuations based on my stress level and fatigue. So all that head-hunger battling is before me.

I am officially part of the VSG fraternity. Surgery went great with Dr. Nick Nicholson at forest park in Dallas. I have a little sorness around my larger incision but other than that I feel great no nausea or severely painful cramps.

Teachamy reacted to CowgirlJane in random musings from a really bored woman...lol
The hardest and I mean the hardest thing about recovering from plastics is the firm instructions to move like an 85 year old arthritic woman walking on an icy sidewalk - slowly and carefully. I want to go freaking run a marathon or ride a bike or something. Good news... I feel GOOD (to the tune of James Brown, but dancing isn't allowed either)
Since my dear friend care taker wont let me do a 5 k, and I have read alot and have walked the local mall and have explored every corner of the hotel and we have discussed the meaning of life about 100 times.... I am filled with random thoughts to spew...haha
I watched a newstory about a woman boxer down here in Mexico. Didn't understand a dang word... but I thought...that looks fun, but I don't want someone hitting back.lol. It inspired my friend to tell me about a class to take that teaches women hand to hand self defense that is near me (her son works there) and also to think about doing crossfit or something like that once I am recovered. I just want to MOVE. Anyway, at the moment, the idea of doing hand to hand combat with someone that wont hit back just sounds very appealing... maybe I have been cooped up too long...LOL
I do plan to take a gun safety and shooting course in January (ooohh maybe I can start a board war over the topic? - told you I am bored). I have several reasons, but one is that I am going to start competing in a horse event called cowboy mounted shooting. I am a pretty good rider, love to ride FAST but never shot a gun before so thought I should start there...haha
I must also notice that where I am at in Mexico is so muchlike the USA that other then the language and the nacho like dish at the Breakfast bar at the hotel, I am shocked with howmuch things are the same. No problem at huge grocery store - laid out the same way as typical urban / suburban American grocery. cars are the same, people act and look very similar etc etc. I had been to TJ mexico before, but I am in Monterrey and it really is quite... familiar feeling. I have traveled alot internationally so keep that in mind too.
Found the cutest dang outfit at the mall. cant try it on over drains, but think I am going to take a chance and buy it anyway because I want some kind of souvenier and it is at least useful (and my freaking drain doesnt count as a souvenier!!!) And it i just adorable.
Today, 2 of 7 drains come out. I think 4 should come out based on output, but another day to be sure.... grrr. They tell me I will travel home with one drain which will be easy peasy compared to 7!
Read a book called the 5 languages of love. Its been out forever, and I hate self help books in general, but it is really awesome. Clarified in my mind beyond what I already knew why I felt so unloved by my ex that is for sure. I recommend it - easy read and just helps you see that different people need to receive love in different ways to really feel it.
I have more random thoughts, but nurse will behere soon so it is time to start undoing the torture device...ie compression garments... so my heart gets used to beating without without it before the shower. seriously, it is so tight you faint if you take it off and get up too fast. This is why women used to "swoon" I think... those corsets that they wore so tight change your blood pressure and when that thing loosens...hello floor if you don't give yourself a few minutes.
your random thoughts for the day?

Sorry your family isn't supportive. It's never easy. When I eventually start solids, I plan to food process my meat at first. You should see if you can find fat-free lo-cal gravy, if you're so inclined. Squash would be good too, I bet. And cranberry sauce.

Although I am going to make it through Thanksgiving pre-sleeve, I am hoping to be sleeved on Dec. 18th. I always make the kids gluten-free pancakes on Christmas so I could indulge too. (I have Celiac) This year I will make them regular pancakes so I won't be tempted. (I SERIOUSLY won't be tempted. I have had Celiac for 6 yrs., nothing is worth the agony!) I am not too worried about dinner...broth will be fine, I am sure. I also like the idea of going to the movies on the holidays. i know they are open Thanksgiving evening, what about Christmas? It would be a good time to hang out with the kiddos and sip, sip, sip. My mom is planning to help me with wrapping gifts and final details. VERY happy about that too.
    I am so excited!

In the beginning my family felt a little strange about eating in front of me until I explained that it doesnt matter. There are always going to be people eating large amounts of food in front of me, its on me to deal with it and I dont want anyone changing their habits on account of me. Plus, I dont get hungry so its not like Im dying to eat 5 pounds of food in a sitting lol. Everyone is used to it and its not even an issue.

    Thanks for the welcome everyone!
I set my surgery date yesterday for November 4! It seems so unreal.... I've struggled with my weight for so long I can't wrap my mind around where I'll be a year from now. The great unknown is scary sometimes, but it's even scarier to remain like this.
I'm grateful for this place to connect with people going through similar things! It really helps.

I am pre-sleeve, so feel free to ignore me. I am a type I diabetic, so I have been dealing with nutrtiion my whole life. Have you tried cutting grains out all together? (no wraps or chips for a while, keep your carbs limited to fruit/dairy.) Also try lean meats, fish, and low-fat cheeses. Also, if you can tolerate them, a lot of vegetarian options are low-fat and good sources of Protein. And as always, track your intake, weigh and measure your food, and keep fighting the good fight! Best of luck!!!

Losing an average of 1 pound per week is typical/recommended without a sleeve. Expecting to lose 10 pounds a month is an optimistic case scenario. Some people do, some people won't. I have a low BMI too, so I expect my loss might be on the slow side. Either way is OK with me.

I haven't had this surgery yet, but I've had several others. It doesn't feel like any time has passed, but you wake up with people telling you it's over. You feel sleepy and groggy, and that's it as far as the anesthesia goes. As far as the sleeve goes--I can't wait myself!
