I felt this way. I felt ashamed that I even needed to be having surgery - like if I really had my life in order, I wouldn't have let myself get this big in the first place. I wouldn't have let myself get big and miss out living life to the fullest in my 20's. I was embarrassed to tell people and wondered what they would think of me. Even now that it's over, I have these moments of, "oh my god! what did i do to myself!"
HOWEVER... then I have to think, if I didn't do it now, I could be even older than I am not, looking back, still struggling, wishing I had done something because I've missed by 30's (or 40's, or more!) This is not going to be easy. The full extent of how hard it is probably hasn't even hit me yet, but I know that I will do it. I have to do it because I want to feel better.
I had a NSV today just realizing that my horrible foot pain has stopped - just by taking off 15 lbs the week after surgery. Maybe with another 15, my hips will feel good. Another and my knees will feel good. I have to hold on to that hope of being pain free, being active with my husband, and feeling proud of myself!
Be proud that you are taking control now and just move forward. A year from now, you'll read your post and it will all be in the past.

Remember when we were kids and would get a "do-over"? Well, this is your DO OVER! This is one of the only ways I know an adult can make up for all the things we missed out on - been humiliated by - had to suffer as a result of our weight.
Don't be disappointed in yourself. Celebrate the end of this chapter of your life and decide you are going to KICK ASS in the next chapter of your life! All the things you mention are going to make you work your sleeve like crazy to hit your goal. Then you can use these memories as the reason to STAY at goal.
I am not disappointed in you AT ALL...I am very impressed that you are taking charge of your weight! Hugs my friend.

So one of my goals from preop was to be able to wear my husband's t-shirts. Not that I will wear them but just that I could be able to. He wears a large and I can't ever remember buying large shirts. For as long as I can remember I've only ever bought XL shirts. A few months ago I found a t-shirt that I really liked but they didn't have it in an XL so I went ahead and bought it in a large. I wore it this past weekend!!! I also tried on one of my husband's t-shirts and IT FIT!!! GGGOOOOOAAAALLLL!!!!! I was so excited! I also had a pretty funny NSV the other day. I was standing and looked down and saw a shadow next to me, I couldn't figure out who was standing next to me until I realized it was my OWN shadow! I didn't even recognize my own shadow! I couldn't help but laugh. I also saw a picture of myself that a random kid took of me, took me a second to realize who I was looking at there too. It is strange seeing this thinner, healither (and prettier too if I can say that without sounding conceited) woman looking back at me

I am officially part of the VSG fraternity. Surgery went great with Dr. Nick Nicholson at forest park in Dallas. I have a little sorness around my larger incision but other than that I feel great no nausea or severely painful cramps.

TES reacted to superchica879 in I have heard that we shouldn't dye our hair for 6 months after surgery - is this true?
I am also a hair stylist and have noticed that after my surgery my hair felt more dry and fragile. I still color my hair (darker) every 8 weeks or so and it happens to make it feel better. Of course any highlighting or lightening your hair can be damaging even prior to surgery so you need to be careful what products and who does it.
As far as your color not taking...med's can cause that, so I ask clients if there on medications and if so I wash the hair with dish soap before the service (coloring, perming) leaving it on for a few minutes and it helps strip the med's out of the hair!
I've also noticed that even when I get all my protien, liquids and Vitamins I still am losing my hair....a lot! My hair is way past the middle of my back and has always been nice and thick but now it's a definite notice that its thinning. I have to clean my brush out after each use because its filled. I pray it slows down soon but it's pretty much inevitable! Good luck with everything!

i haven't heard that. I dye my hair every 6 weeks and also have a keratin treatment.....I also take Biotin and silica and my hair has almost all grown back......I do also condition my hair when I have it dyed and straightened. My hair looks pretty good and grows at an extremely fast rate.....

It's not true at all, we had this discussion several month ago and lots of hairdressers chimed in. They said it doesn't harm the hair at all and in fact will make it seem thicker. I am 4 months out and have mine done every 6 weeks or so.
Hair loss may or may not happen, do your best to get your Protein in and take Biotin.

I've been watching what I eat since my surgery but my workout had been interrupted by my schedule from 5-2 days a week. I have been working longer hours to prepare things for being out following surgery next week. Maybe that has something to do with my lack of loss. I went for my surgical clearance and the doctor said "you look great" how much have you lost! I told him 99lbs and he put 100lbs lost on my chart and told me he won't tell anyone.

Don't feel bad. I've been stuck at 98-99lbs and can't get to my first goal of 100lbs down. It has been one month with no change, but I am being patient because I know it will happen eventually.

My scale hasn't moved in a month either! I was worried then I went to see how close I was to fitting into a pair of jeans I had bought months earlier (size 7) and they fit!!! I guess the inches shed off while the scale doesn't move....

efeezell sorry you've been having problems
having/doing this process can/is difficult sometimes
some/many/most (me too) OP have also strayed on occassion
i have an old picture of myself i will look at
i never want to be that person again
i don't keep any chips, Cookies, et al in the house
if you want a jump start on a couple of pounds - do liquids/protein shakes for a couple of days
then as others have said - do Protein, dense Protein like chicken
that will fill you up easier/quicker
    push the fluids
remind yourself of how successful you've been so far
you went through a lot to have WLS - you don't want to have done it in vain
    gotta work hard
    the ends justify the means!!!!
get back on that horse, and ride em' cowboy
i can see in your eyes the strength and determination you have
you are on the road to a healthier, happier, longer life!!!!
    good luck

Just a quick update. Finally broke another zero and am in the 150s- 20 lbs to go! Starting to squeeze into size 8 but 10s are still comfy. Here's a pic from the weekend. The red dress is flowey but it still said "small" on the label! Who would have thought that the word small and I would ever be in the same sentence? How's everyone else doing?
