FatMamaw got a reaction from Huntingnurse in When can we drink soda
I love my diet coke. I did give it up preop and was ready to give it up forever. At first I just tried a sip or two of a flat diet coke. It didn't taste so good. I thought good, I don't miss it. About 4 month out I put a opened one in the fridge and let it sit till the next day . It was wonderful. I had been reading how many doctors are saying carbonation can't stretch your stomach, and the stretchy part has been cut out.... Ect. So for a treat once a day I get a fountain DIET coke and drink it. My stomach is no bigger than when I started and I have no problems. Just giving my experience on diet coke.

In my experience, barring complications, you will be "able" to take the grand kids camping. However, you may not want to. I looked at your profile to see your vital stats, but your age, etc. isn't listed. So let me share my experience. I am in my early forties and was 222 when I was sleeved. Four weeks post-op, my sutures were nicely healed, I felt great...and I still tired easily after a full day at my desk job. Yes, I was walking and doing other exercises everyday; yes, I was eating my Protein and drinking my fluids. All was well, my body just took another 3 or 4 weeks before everything felt fully recovered and my endurance and energy levels were back to normal.

I'm 4 days post-op too, and I'm super hungry! I want everything I can't have, of course, but my Protein shakes/pudding etc. make me nauseated. A lot of times hunger gets confused with reflux-they can feel about the same. I've started paying closer attention to my reflux, making sure to take my prescribed meds and add over-the-counter ones as needed in order to stop myself from advancing my diet prematurely just because I'm refluxing more. Of course the day I came home from the hospital my Mom came over with McDonalds for her lunch. I swear those fries smelled so good...! food comercials look really good to me too right now.
I wonder, is this the "head hunger" everyone talks about? I don't think I really have a good sense of what exactly I'm feeling since I'm only 4 days out, most likely still swollen, still sore, and used to taking a different medication for reflux (my surgeon switched me post-op). Maybe I'm just not used to it yet... I had some Soup this evening, and I thought I felt "full" after about 3/4 cup, but I was still "hungry." I waited about an hour and went back and had some more. This doesn't bode well since I'm on liquids for another 3 weeks...

I'm almost a month out - I felt the same way! For me, I began to feel like I needed something with substance. I felt weak living on just liquids! Once you move on to softs/mushies you will feel much more satisfied and not as hungry.
When I was released to softs, I had some mashed potatoes on the way home from my check up! I was so happy, I literally almost cried! LOL!!! Stay strong, take it from me, it gets much easier!

The first incision was around 8:15 (my surgeon told my hubby) and I woke up in recovery around 11:30 ish. So, about 3 hours for me. But it was robotic laproscoptic so, I don't know if that takes longer

I'm with you! This pre op diet has been tough, but I made it through. But this clear liquid only is very hard. I'm so grouchy because I am soooo HUNGRY!!! I leave for the hospital in 10 hours. I tried to sleep the time away, but can't sleep when I'm hungry. Hang in there. It will be worth it!

I hope to encourage you.... This surgery Is the best thing I have ever done for myself. Honestly, it is like having built in Portion Control. When I do eat I fill up real fast. It is awesome. I am sure your husband is a bit nervous about this surgery. I had a couple people in my life have the same response as your husband. However, those people today have a complete different outlook on this surgery.
I wish you well and hope you are in the 50% of the people that lose hunger! It is wonderful to be free of the drive for food... Best of luck! Tina

Life as you know will never be the same. You may feel something like hunger sometimes, but it isn't the same, and you can easily forget you need to eat. It will never be so hard as it is right now. I am so glad I did this. I feel like i've been given a second chance at life. Good luck! You are almost there!

I am one of the people that does not feel hunger. I occasionally get a craving for certain types of food but most of the time I have to make myself eat. I can get up at 9 or 10 am and not think about eating til like 2 pm. I am 2 months post op and can only eat about 3-4 ounces of anything before being full. Best of luck with your surgery.

I'm three days post op and yesterday I felt hungry because I really was! Not because I was sad or mad or glad! Great feeling to need nutrition versus craving food!

I'm 18 months post op and I seldom get "hungry". I've developed a routine with my food. I eat a Protein Bar when I get up, another at lunch time (noonish) and a high Protein dinner around 5 pm. I do add Snacks, usually a mini babybel at 10 am and another around 3pm. If I don't follow this routine, I will forget to eat and then I bottom out and end up very shaky and nauseous.

I was sleeved on the 12th. I was STARVING going in to surgery. I can honestly say after surgery I had no hunger or desire to eat until today. Today has been the first day I feel hungry but it's nothing compared to before surgery. You will do great. Good Luck

I doubt you will be as hungry after. For the first week post op I was lucky if I met my Water goals. At times I had head hunger but as far as being physically hungry I don't think you will.

I am also pre-op but my friend who had VSG and went from 320 to 180lbs told me he doesn't crave food anymore and in fact he forgets to eat.

I'm on Clear Liquids for 3 weeks post-op. Sucks but makes things kind of easy. I figure I will stick to Water, crystal light, broths with some Protein powder added, juices, etc.

If you are on the Protein shake/ low carb low fat diet... Your body will go into ketosis after a few days and you burn fat at a very high rate. If you have to eat, make sure you eat protein
Like meat. Don't eat carbs,it will knock you right out.
