  1. I'm conducting a personal study on wine and ketosis. 2 glasses will certainly throw you out of ketosis all the way to neutral and you don't just jump right back into ketosis.
  2. THANK YOU!!!!! I think I love you. Really what you said...but that you said it. There are some things that you have mentioned that have been twanging on my very last nerve.
  3. I just had an AHA moment...maybe. Please don't tar me and set me on fire. When the research that is shown in doctor's offices and that we read online that the expected results or success rate of vsg is approximately a 60% of excess weight, they are going by a BMI chart. I have wondered about that other 40%. What happened to that? Why isn't it 90%? or 100%? What prevents it from being even more successful? One reason might be some weight regain as the body stabalizes and new habits are learned. It does not sound unrealistic that there would be an adjustment period and that, yeah, maybe you can't be perfect with your diet forever and you may bounce up a bit after hitting your ideal healthy weight. BUT another reason for the statistical percentage may be due to the goal weights that set in the first place. If the percentage measure of success is being standardized using a BMI chart, then that is not reflected in these posts. Almost nobody here is going by what the BMI chart says. The goal weights most posters here are sharing places them in the mid or high end of overweight. I'm not saying that is bad or good and I'm not judging your choice. I have been wondering about statistics and this is one thing that can explain them. I've also been going by a BMI chart for my own idea weight. Its ok if you don't and I'm not saying you should. If you set your goal weight 20-30 lbs more than what the BMI chart indicates is ideal for you, you reach your goal and maintain it, then you are 100% successful!!! Not 60%.
  4. Well....I dunno... I work a desk job all day and when I'm not at my desk I often have drive for hours and hours at a time to get to a remote location to work. I am also a doctoral student and am in class from 4-9:30 every Tuesday night and from 9-4 every other Saturday. Then I have to read 4-6 books per class. I'll be doing that for two more years. It had never occurred to me to think my job or continuing my education were making me fat. That may not exactly be what you are talking about in your post. But the choices that we make or don't make result in an outcome. Sometimes there are things that make choices more difficult, but planning and desire certainly help.
  5. I was driving after 4 days. My doctor said I had NO restrictions
  6. Celery, carrots, endive, apple, baked sweet potato "fries", pear slices
  7. Do they even have any nutritional value at all?
  8. I considered the band for about a year, then the plication for about 5 months or so. The week before surgery I decided on the sleeve and I am SO GLAD I did. The plication, when you really start reading about it, watching a video on it, thinking about it ...... is just a really bad idea in my opinion. So many things wrong with that. I am curious to see what the research will say about it in the next 5-10 years and if it will even still be a surgery option anymore.
  9. But that isn't normal. It may have been what you allowed yourself to accept as your normal.
  10. I really do avoid sugar and almost never crave it anymore. I would rather have cheese any day. It may have been that I was having coffee at work and I don't usually do that either and it triggered my sweet tooth. Does sugar bother me? I thought that is what made me sick when I tried creme brulee at 4 weeks and later chocolate cheesecake at Thanksgiving and later chess pie at Christmas. I told my doctor about it and he laughed and said that it wasn't so much sugar as it was fat. That fat is really toxic to us in any volume and especially if it is the wrong kind of fat. I didn't eat the mini candy bars all at once. There was a period of time between them, so that may have made a difference. And they weren't the fun size, these are the minis. I tried the Snickers, the Kit Kat and Twix. Last night I gave my SO a king cake. He had never had one before and loved it. I took one small bite from the edge and there is no way I would have taken another. It was too rich and too sweet. I just knew it would end up making me sick.
  11. I don't really know why he is so opposed to protein supplements but my surgeon is a scary man ... meaning he is very no-nonsense and tough love. There are very few people on this planet that can intimidate me in any way because I am naturally very assertive, but my bariatric doctor has my attention. It may be respect, but I listen to him very carefully. That doesn't mean I won't ever drink one again, but I won't be dependent on them again. There also may be some research studies that they are aware of that have shown some measurable outcome with the continued use of protein supplements.
  12. Drinking alcohol also throws you out of ketosis. I'm doing a personal study on this with the level of ketosis and time passed post-alcohol using ketone strips.
  13. I have wondered why the same scale is used for both genders. When I think of my best friend who is 5'6" and weighs around 135, she looks very healthy and slim, not skinny. When my mother was older she was 5'4" and 125 and still had a belly but looked healthy. I guess some norms change, too ...as far as what generations find more attractive or healthy or acceptable. I remember when I first started seeing muffin tops. It made no sense to me. My generation would not have done that at all.
  14. Exactly that. Email or call your doctor and explain what you ate and your concern. NOBODY here.. NONE of our experiences nor advice is a good substitute for a conversation with your doctor.
  15. I stay in hotel rooms all of the time due to work travel. I often get out in my car and explore the area. It can be very interesting. There are historical places just about everywhere you go. You may want to develop a new hobby and take photos to submit to Wikimedia.
  16. From my experience at that same stage, it sounds like a great deal of food. The nerves in your stomach are still in shock and your tissue is still swollen. But everyone is different and one day you might be able to eat more than others.
  17. I should have posted this a long time ago when I was still drinking a lot of Protein powders, but it slipped my mind. I know that there was a thread around here somewhere on ratings of protein powders, but I often didn't share the same opinion, so here are some notes I made. I didn't try everything out there, so I missed out on tasting a lot of them. My surgeon asked me to be completely off of Protein drinks after 12 weeks, and I am for the most part. First, though, I do want to share that I always mixed my Protein powder with Water. Only once did I use milk instead of water. I also went to smoothie King a few times and their mix was not in my control so there may be some variables there that I am not aware of. Protein Supplement Ratings nectar Fuzzy Navel Sour taste that turned me off. Unfortunately I went by reviews from other tasters and bought a large container of it. Hated it. Nectar strawberry Kiwi in blender - great taste, dissolved well, slight foam 100 cals Nectar Crystal Sky in blender - light sky blue and sweet, pixie stick or kool aide taste, did not dissolve completely in blender 100 cals Gladiator vanilla (Smoothie King) no fruit or additives - chalky taste, pedestrian flavor, expensive for product 180 cals for small Gladiator Strawberry with fresh strawberries added, no additives - Wow! Intense strawberry milkshake type flavor. Very filling. I could not finish it in an hour. Gladiator chocolate no add ins Very rich chocolate malt flavor, which was delicious at first, but filled me up very quickly after consuming half. I threw the remainder away. Now I suspect it was the wrong powder and they may have substituted a higher calorie powder. It was just way too rich. Nectar Green Apple Ecstasy Strong, crisp apple like flavor with hints of tart and sweet. Delicious but does have a very slight after taste, though not enough to discourage trying again Nectar Vanilla Torte Rich vanilla flavor and smell with tiny flecks of vanilla just like you find in vanilla bean ice cream. A winner Nectar Oreo OMG good Excellent Oreo flavor, milky ice cream taste unjury Plain Powder I know a lot of people love Unjury, but I am not the hugest fan. It really doesn't have much of a taste or texture unless you mix too much ratio wise into whatever you are putting it in. 1/4 of a scoop in sugar free pudding was fantastic. A whole scoop in a small ready made cup of sugar free pudding was nauseating. Muscle Milk Regular Chocolate Ready Made Tastes fantastic but more calories than I wanted to consume at one time. I could not finish one. 230 calories Muscle Milk Light Chocolate or Vanilla I prefer the chocolate to vanilla personally. The first few are pretty good but there is a particular taste that is specific to this ready made that either you can live with or not. I still grab one of these from time to time for a quick boost. 100 calories EAS Avantage These are a lower calorie version of their ready made shake. They have a distinct soyness (is that a word?) to them. The strawberry and chocolate are not horrible. I like the vanilla least. They remind me of drinking oily, flavored water. 100 calories And my personal favorite? Isopure banana Cream Powder I like this one so much I can drink it from a shaker with just water and a bit of ice. It has a nice banana flavor. If you mix it with milk and you like banana flavor...oh wow! You are welcome to add your own critiques if you like.

Yes, it does. So does the Cookies and cream. Even with Water as the mix.
  19. In 1.5 days I had 5 mini candy bars which are approximately 50 calories each. That is 250 pointless, but tasty, calories. I ate those and was really satisfied by them. That is SO different from before when I looked forward to the holiday season when there was a constant rotation of seasonally themed fresh candy in large multi-bags. It was not unusual for me to buy one or more $8-$12 bags of mixed chocolate and eat it all by myself. That along with the other weekly chocolate candy stash that was in perpetual rotation. Maybe I wasn't as bad as before. I just fear old habits. Sometimes I think that this success should be savored because it is temporary. The mental part of this journey or life project may never go away.
  20. I know I'm still crashing this thread being 5'3", but at 3.5 months out and 163lbs, I know this is still wayyyy too big. I'm sticking with my goal of 115 lbs for now and seeing how that goes.
  21. I had a girls wine trip to Sonoma and Napa that was planned way before I knew about my surgery date...nonrefundable plane and hotel tickets. So I had wine at 5 weeks out. Burned like hell the first tasting. I tried again the next day and didn't feel so great then either. Often I would just enjoy the scenery and atmosphere while my friends bounced from winery to winery tasting events. Since then I've taken a few cautious sips of beer and decided that my decision to forgo all carbonated beverages from now on was a wise decision. (This coming from a former craft beer lover.) Now I had diet cranberry and vodka sometimes. Its ok, but really not necessary to have fun.

Protein drinks aren't the best thing I've ever had either, but it isn't forever. I just sucked it up and drank them. Adding ice in the blender with them helps. I always used just Water with them. Sometimes I would drink a Muscle Milk Light or an EAS Advantage ready made shake. They are convenient.
  23. Yesterday after lunch and today have not been my better days. I had two mini candy bars out of my boss's candy bowl on his desk. Went out to eat Indian food and hurt myself, even though I really had a fairly small volume of food. It may have been the bismati saffron rice that did me in. I never eat rice anymore. I didn't throw up but was very uncomfortable for quite a while. Then today I had 3 mini candy bars from my boss's candy dish. I had a reasonably small healthy breakfast and part of a fat free yogurt for lunch, but grazed on pita chips through the day. For supper I had about 1/4 of a cup of leftovers from the Indian food. If it even matters, this came after a week and a half of eating less than usual and some days eating almost nothing at all because I had a -0 appetite. 3.5 months out and still working through so many things.
  24. That may have been my problem. I was attempting to eat some of the white roughage too and my sleeve was NOT happy with that fiberous stuff.
